City Advent Calendar - Day 12
Posted by MeganL,Halfway through the calendar, and we've had three very good minifigures, and some really great microbuilds.
Yesterday's fire truck was quite appropriate considering we'd met Freya the day before. What microbuild will we see today?
Today's microbuild is a train. The locomotive and coal hopper feature a dark green, while the caboose/passenger compartment features red. It's a very effective build. In some respects, it reminds me of 10254 Holiday Train, though that might be because I just set that up last night.
I've been really enjoying these microbuilds, as I've mentioned before. Most of these builds have had a good number of pieces - today's total is 25 pieces with 3 spares. They're very satisfying little builds for each day.
Still, I do miss not having some more festive cheer. There's only been the Christmas tree and some presents so far.

The little micro builds are fun and this train is really good. I am starting to wish Lego would release a true 100% Christmas themed advent calendar with a holiday themed build or figure each day each day. and as I am daydreaming, I would love a Santa and sleigh with eight reindeer set, even Santa and sleigh with four reindeer would do:)
Thanks for the daily articles, Megan!
It's neat, and another fun build-in-the-bag challenge!
I like how there are enough spare parts to build a double tender, for those really long trips!
@Joefish Nigel Gresley would be proud...
My son has been waiting for a train to ride the rails on inside of the box since day one, this was a little bit of a let down, since the carts dont connect and so it can't be driven properly. Ah well, the helicopter is still our fave :)
@Joefish:
Alternate options include:
1. Making a spare boiler, so you can carry extra water.
2. Giving it a second smokestack (self-powered tender!).
3. Making the most private car of all (room for _one_ person, if they stand).
sometimes I hope for a microscale train set, this year's model is so good
Yeah, it would have been great if these could all have somehow connected together. Otherwise, quite bitty.
@Taco_Bill:
The Hogwarts Express in last year's HPAC did link the cars together, but it was just the engine and tender. The tender rides low enough that the only way to expand it would have been to add a clip to both ends and put the 1x1 brick w/ bar on the front of any additional cars. Without some serious redesigns, there's just no way to work those parts into this build.
