Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 3

Posted by ,

Hogwarts Castle appeared yesterday and I am expecting to encounter something from within the castle today. Perhaps the Yule Ball theming will continue from day one.

Following the miniature Hogwarts yesterday, a tiny Durmstrang ship emerges today! This model makes brilliant use of 1x1 bricks with scrolls towards the stern and I like the rounded bottom, as well as the angled bowsprit. The 1x2 brackets which decorate either side appear similarly fitting here as their hollow studs resemble circular gunports.

The mast looks reasonable too, featuring an adjustable sail and a pearl gold 1x1 round plate which forms the crow's nest. However, the proportions of this model differ substantially from the onscreen vessel, lacking the pronounced forecastle and aftcastle. The colour scheme of reddish brown, dark brown, dark tan and black is successful though.

Overall - 4.0 - I am pleased to see the Durmstrang ship in LEGO again, fifteen years after 4768 The Durmstrang Ship was released, but think its shaping could be improved.

I put my extra gold stud on the exposed stud on the back section and it looks good there

I only saw the top of the mast in the image at first and thought it would be another one where four of the builds are banners, lol.

By in Australia,

I think it looks better than the original set (it has more pieces!). Hopefully we’ll get a remake soon.

Relating to my point about the awful model in the City calendar, this is a good example of a model that can be appreciate by both those who are fans of the source material, and those people who know nothing about Harry Potter. It's also a good, competent little design.

The brackets also create gunwales so the itty bitty characters don't fall overboard from the itty bitty ship. The 4L bar seems a bit oversized for the sail, and I'm thinking a 3L bar may have been more appropriate, but it would have also been more expensive to include because they'd have to include a second 3L bar (more plastic _and_ more labor).

@Jelippo:
Same. Still playing around with a way to use the extra parts from Hogwarts.

@Robot99:
It's the Yule Ball from HP4. They didn't really have anything House-themed in that scene, as the House rivalries had largely taken a backseat to the rivalries between the three Wizarding Schools.

@Kynareth:
If we haven't by now, I wouldn't expect one for a while. With the exception of the Hogwarts Express, all the 2018 minifig-scale stuff was centered around the first two films. 2019 moved on to the next two. This year's sets have all been focused on the fifth and sixth films, so if the pattern holds, 2021 should focus on the last two films. After that, we have no idea if they'll jump back to the start, pick randomly amongst all eight, or shelve the theme again.

Even though I'm not at all a micro scale person, this is pretty cool overall.

I am placing this alongside the micro ship build from the Elf Clubhouse
