Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 7
Posted by CapnRex101,Despite its consistent focus upon The Goblet of Fire, this Advent Calendar has regularly moved between the Yule Ball and other subjects. I am wondering what will emerge next.
Let's open the door and find out...
This gigantic gramophone takes inspiration from Gryffindor's preparations before the Yule Ball, where Professor McGonagall offers some rudimentary dancing instruction. Gramophones have appeared in earlier sets but this depiction includes a comically enormous horn that corresponds precisely with the onscreen design, featuring the same proportions and curved tone arm.
I am equally impressed with the turntable, needle and record which is formed using a 2x2 round tile with a hole through the centre. The turntable cannot actually rotate but I think it looks perfect for display and I like the colour combination of black, reddish brown and medium nougat here. A single golden 1x1 round plate provides welcome detail below the needle.
Overall - 5.0 - This gramophone differs from anything we have encountered in traditional Harry Potter sets, feels consistent with the Yule Ball theming and looks fantastic!

Tile, Round 2 x 2 with Vinyl Record with Black Heads with Glasses Pattern from CMF and a Turntable 2 x 2 Plate would have made this indeed a perfect 5. I think It's a missed opportunity.
It's a cool design, but personally the horn looks off to me with its three different colours. The horn in the movie was entirely made from one metal, a kind of red and greenish blend. I'd say doing the whole horn in the reddish brown would've looked better. I'm guessing not all those pieces already exist in the same colour? Otherwise, great design.
This here is an excellent model, better than the ones from prev days. I love its parts usage and colors.
I like this one. The oversized horn seemed off when I uilt it, but it doesn't unbalance the model and I figured that it was an aspect of the film prop, as confirmed by the article.
Honestly, this is the main reason I bought this advent calendar, even though it also has a very nice figure selection with nice prints, and some really good other small builds.
Huh? Oh, sorry, I was trying to figure out how to balance a nickel on the tonearm, and not having a lot of luck. The dish should be available in black, even if it’s not in dark-red, so it should have been possible to eliminate at least one color from the bell. On mine, the tonearm sits less than one plate above the record, so adding a turntable would have required raising the tonearm. However, if you swap out the larger brown part for a 1x2-1x2 up bracket, you can connect it to the 1x2 plate with a turntable without dramatically altering the look. Then you just need to swing a reddish-brown turntable base with a black top, so the record doesn’t have light-bley chips in the corners.
It’s too oversized for me and looks borderline ridiculous.
This definitely put a smile on my face, similar in the way that the chess board from last year did. I agree with the 5.0 rating. A turntable that actually rotates is ideal, however in defense of the designer, there is no turntable base in the brown color. As for a printed record, I am sure the printed part budget is limited, and we have already had a printed Yule Ball invitation. The gramophone is a highlight for me so far.
