Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 16

Posted by ,

Exclusive minifigures are often the highlight of LEGO Advent Calendars and one such example appeared yesterday, with Padma Patil. Another model seems accordingly likely next.

Find out after the break...

Two small Christmas trees emerge today, complementing the previous tree from day thirteen. These new models look reasonable in my opinion and I appreciate the consistent application of trans-clear, trans-light blue and white elements between these trees and their larger counterpart. The conical shape has certainly been achieved, albeit with a slightly awkward transition between the 1x1 slopes and 2x2 cone.

However, exactly the same pattern of one larger Christmas tree followed by two smaller designs feels incredibly derivative of 75964 Harry Potter Advent Calendar. In fact, their structure remains almost unaltered from 2019, replacing the decorative stars with 1x1 cones at the top of each tree on this occasion.

Overall - 3.5 - Despite seeming rather derivative, these Christmas trees do look quite good and complement that from day thirteen.

Did I click on the Star Wars advent article by mistake? Because these are clearly rocket ships.

I rather like the addition of these two small trees to complement the earlier tree. Derivative perhaps, but still different. I added a 1x1 round to the top of each to add a splash of color. I chose pearl gold because it was handy, but trans-lite blue might be better or even trans-red.

I'm past the point of complaining about repetitive builds. One, every Advent Calendar may be somebody's first, so if they get a repetition of an older build...well, it's old to you, but new to them, right? And second, if a design works, why knock it? I honestly think some brick-built tree designs are terrible and others don't look that bad. If they hit a point of perfection, I say: keep it.

By in Poland,

you call it repetitive I call it more trees to add around the builds to get festive ;pp

I like that we mostly get minifigure scale things in HPAC, I can find use for them later on, but a pile of microscale builds is just that... a pile of micro scale builds that I don't know what to do with X"D

Over half the tree being a white cone shape is just comical.

I think it's supposed to be covered with snow

I bought ten extra copies of last year’s HPAC primarily to get 30 trees, so I’m not going to complain about getting more trees, even if I’m not going to mix the two color schemes. There are small differences. The small ones last year didn’t have the 1x1 cones, and the large one didn’t have the 2x2x2 cone (the large wedge plates were 2x4, and a third Kunce brick was covered in cheese wedges like the bases on these).

@WemWem :
This time Harry is making sure Draco can’t one-up him for quidditch brooms...

@CCC :
Last year’s worked for live trees covered in snow. This year they’re designed to look like the trees that were decorating the Yule Ball. Given the IP, they may have also been live trees, but as such things would go in real life, they’d be fake for sure.

These really highlighted for me how weird the trans-light blue pyramids on the big tree look.

I had to find a closeup shot to see what you were talking about. In the long shots, all you see is the snow, which makes them look a bit like white trees (the green gets so lost in shadow that it reads black). But I’m still remembering pure white trees. Is that from one of the other films?
