Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 17
Posted by CapnRex101,We have reached the final seven days of 75981 Harry Potter Advent Calendar and this Yule Ball scene is becoming rather substantial. Hopefully another interesting item arrives next.
Let's open door number seventeen and see...
Pianos have appeared increasingly often throughout the LEGO range, especially since printed keyboard tiles were introduced. This element only appears in five other sets and looks splendid here. Additionally, I like the dark bluish grey colour for the casing. Black would certainly be more traditional but this colour looks appropriate for the frozen decorations at the Yule Ball, as though the entire piano is encrusted with frost.
The simple music stand looks equally appealing and I like the shape of this piano, along with the smooth tiles positioned across the top. However, the model does look rather small beside figures and should perhaps have been elevated slightly. Of course, that would be an easy modification to introduce, if you wish.
Overall - 4.5 - Despite its small size, this piano looks excellent and I like the unusual dark bluish grey colour choice.

If only we actually had a character who could be used to play the piano/perform

This is my only chance for a Lego Jarvis Cocker minifigure, but I’m not getting my hopes up!
the leg pieces look cracked??? is that just how they look or did you get cracked pieces?

That’s the way pearl silver/gold parts end up sometimes. Has to do with the molding process and the plastic colors.

Or it's a magic piano that plays itself?
@Jelippo:
Did Schroeder go to Hogwarts?
@DoomBot:
With the pearl and metallic colors, they suspend a pigment in transparent or translucent plastic so the light can penetrate and reflect off the shiny bits of pigment. What you’re seeing is a weld line. Because the inside is hollow, the plastic enters the mold from one point in the base, flows around the core of the mold like a river around an island, and then the two flows meet again on the opposite side. Where they come together, the plastic always forms something like a scar, but on regular opaque colors it’s not always obvious. With pearl/metallic colors, the pigment orients itself against the surface of each flow, and you get this weird effect where a dark band appears as a result. If you play around with the angle of light, you can make the band look lighter than the rest of the plastic, depending on which areas are reflecting more light back at you. And if you look exactly opposite that band, you should be able to find the pip on the side of the base for a cone, or on the fat part of the cylinder for round bricks.

Not-that-grand piano.
It's a baby grand piano!
I wonder where its parents are...
@PurpleDave:
Actually, Schroeder's piano would need shorter legs. It's a cute idea, though.
This is a cute build, but I thought it would be a bit bigger. Hopefully we get the Weird Sisters as minifigures one day!
