Results: What is your favourite set, set costing below $40 and minifigure of 2020?

Posted by ,

LEGO produced numerous exceptional sets and minifigures during 2020. We accordingly invited Brickset readers to nominate and vote for your favourite examples in three categories.

Those polls have now been completed, offering some expected results alongside certain surprises! View the winners after the break...

Most popular minifigure of 2020 - Orange Spaceman

Classic Space undoubtedly resonates with many Brickset readers and the Orange Spaceman which is currently available with LEGO Minifigure: A Visual History therefore won this category quite comfortably. Captain Redbeard also performed well, following his appearance with 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay. That is hardly surprising either since the original version of this figure was victorious in our poll to find your favourite ever minifigure during 2018!

  1. Orange Spaceman - 562 votes
  2. The Child - 441 votes
  3. Captain Redbeard - 423 votes
  4. Ahsoka Tano - 375 votes
  5. Darth Vader (Christmas Jumper) - 288 votes

Most popular set costing less than $40 of 2020 - 75280 501st Legion Clone Troopers

Before preparing the article to receive nominations for this poll, I imagined that 75280 501st Legion Clone Troopers would win fairly easily. In fact, the final voting totals were rather close between the much-demanded Star Wars set and 75979 Hedwig, which represents something completely new for the Harry Potter theme. Nevertheless, 75280 501st Legion Clone Troopers was victorious, evidently satisfying the many LEGO fans who campaigned for its creation!

  1. 75280 501st Legion Clone Troopers - 372 votes
  2. 75979 Hedwig - 337 votes
  3. 31105 Townhouse Toy Store - 283 votes
  4. 40410 Charles Dickens Tribute - 255 votes
  5. 75267 Mandalorian Battle Pack - 238 votes

Most popular set of 2020 - 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay

21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay represents the meeting of outstanding set design with perfect celebration of a classic LEGO theme so there could be little doubt that it would be selected as Brickset readers' favourite set of 2020. However, the margin of victory is extraordinary as this Ideas set received nearly one third of the votes cast, surpassing the combined total of the next four products!

The more interesting battle was perhaps between second and third place. 75978 Diagon Alley and 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina both received exactly the same number of nominations and the result of voting continued their close rivalry, with the Harry Potter entry exceeding its Star Wars counterpart by just eight votes! Both sets are superbly executed in my view, as indeed is the winner.

  1. 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay - 1446 votes
  2. 75978 Diagon Alley - 429 votes
  3. 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina - 421 votes
  4. 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System - 293 votes
  5. 10270 Bookshop - 239 votes

Are you surprised by these results and why do you think these sets and minifigures were the most popular? Let us know in the comments.

Surprised by the minifig results. Orange Spaceman is a pretty boring minifig. They could have made him 20 years ago.
Baby Yoda is cool, but the torso print is pretty bad and he doesn't have a lot going on.
I didn't like the Ahsoka minifig because of the weird glassy eyes (she should have human eyes) and the print on the Lekku mould being too high and weirdly shaped.
Would have been fine with Captain Redbeard winning.

I didn't vote for the 501st Battle Pack, but I was secretly rooting for it. Was expecting it to place pretty high, but I'm surprised to see it in 1st place on Brickset of all places.

Pirates of Barracuda Bay is definitely the worthy winner for the best set of 2020.

Personally don't agree on the under $40 set though, but then again not that big into Star Wars. Its a nice set just not what I would call the best $40 set. My pick was the 43177 Belle's Storybook as it was a great set in a new subtheme that I hope continues further from the 4 released last year and one released this month.

I love the Orange Spaceman fig don't get me wrong his a great minifigure but Mario was my pick, a controversial pick for sure as some don't see him as a figure. Redbeard is a great figure too from the best set of the year, had Mario not been on the list I would have voted Cpt Redbeard.

By in United Kingdom,

Well, I don't think Barracuda Bay's victory is surprising, but it really did run away with an awful lot of votes. As a fan from the 21st century with no real affection for Pirates as a theme, I wouldn't call it a personal favourite, but it is phenomenally well designed, intricate, ambitious and a credit to fan and professional designer. Congratulations!

By in Netherlands,

I'm kind of upset that the 501st 'battle pack' won, honestly. I'm one of the few people who actually dislike the set. I think it could have easily been downscaled by a substantial amount to make for a regular battle pack price point. And then the BARC and AT-RT would even be much more accurate as well! The two droids just seem unnecessary to me, they shouldn't just toss some greatly outnumbered battle droids into the big republic vehicle sets in my opinion. Either make them a serious threat or don't include them at all and give them their own army pack or battle vehicles sets. Seriously, it's been way too long since any separatist alliance army building sets were released (especially compared to all the republic stuff we've gotten instead). What was the last time we saw an actual vulture droid, a hailfire droid or a corporate alliance tank droid, just to name a few? (the answers are six, five and seven years respectively by the way)

Personally I’m worried this will lead to the $15 battle packs getting the axe. Battle Packs were always a way for me as a kid to get a taste of what a wave had to offer since sets were always kinda pricey, so losing them because of this set would really kinda suck.

That and I don’t particularly appreciate the whole “spam hashtags to get what you want” way of doing things. I find if just de-rails conversations that otherwise aren’t related to it and eventually become annoying even if I agree with whatever the goal is.

Back to the topic on hand; good for the Orange Spaceman! The role I gave him for the space station was overseeing construction or the handling of energy crystals. Also glad to see Ahsoka so high up since that’s a character I was hoping to see again for a while.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

A small follow-up to my rant about the 501st troopers that also lead me to the conclusion that the separatists get way too few sets:

After some more research, I've concluded that we've only had THREE separatists vehicles that can be used for army building (so one that you could get multiples of) in the last FIVE years (those being a homing spider droid, a droid gunship and the AAT from last year). The other separatist alliance vehicles from that time period (a whopping TWO in total, wow) were all things that canonically are one-of-a-kind items (general Grievous' starfighter and combat speeder) and thus aren't very usable for army building.
Now compare that to the republics statistics: in the last five years, they got 6 sets with vehicles that fit the army building description I explained above (the mini gunship from the clones & jedi battle pack, a clone turbo tank, an AT-AP and an AT-RT, and of course the oversized builds in the 501st set) , and 4 for unique one-of-a-kind vehicles (Anakin's starfighter and interceptor and Obi-Wan's starfighter and interceptor). Still not a lot, but it's exactly double the amount the poor seppies got...

Edit: Whoops, I totally skipped past Yoda's starfighter. That makes five once-only fighters on the republic side.

There’s a difference between disliking LEGO’s choices and disliking the set. I agree that they didn’t need the droids, but I still like the set for what it is.

I agree, but I also dislike the vehicles because of their ridiculous size. And just for the minifigs, I don't think the set is worth its price tag. So therefore I still don't want it to win.

The AT-RT is one of the smallest yet. They’re making progress and also allow for detail. The BARC is a little big but the walker is well sized for the set, accommodating the needs of the minifigs, in my opinion. If you’re talking about price, then take 75283 which is €\$\£10 more than 75280 with one more piece and two less minifigures. In that situation, 501st is good value. Maybe the droids weren’t necessary, but that’s what happened and removing them would only reduce by a couple of bucks.

Gravatar

Remember it was 'favourite' not 'best'. A lot of factors play into people's favourites, namely nostalgia and fandom.

Alright, you do have a fair point. They did make some much smaller and more accurate walkers though, but those were to accompany the big clone turbo tanks. I'd hoped to see one of those and the older style of BARC in a battle pack, with the clones from 75280 . I won't argue with the value of the current set as it is being good, that's just a fact. Like I mentioned multiple times now, I just really dislike the builds which makes the whole set not worth it for me.

By in Sweden,

It's a bit weird to see the same voting distribution for 2nd place and onward in all three categories, but then Pirates of Baracuda Bay just get a thousand more votes? And there's 300 more vote total for that category than for the minifig, and a full 1000 more than for the set below 40... I suspect there might have been a campaign outside the website to instill votes for that set. Not that it doesn't deserve a win, but that's a bit of an intense lead.

By in United States,

I just went back to look at the results from last year, and now I find this year’s results less surprising. Last year a large ideas set won best set and the Pink Spaceman won best minifigure.

However, IMO the fact that the Orange Spaceman only comes in an expensive book makes him less of a great minifigure than the ones that came in 70841.

Last year’s results:

I would love a purple spaceman. I just hope the next spaceman won't be exclusive to an expensive book. I managed to get the book with Renny at half price, but I doubt that would happen again.
Also, I've noticed that some people seem to think that the love for classic space comes purely from nostalgia. I'm sure that a large part of it is nostalgia, but I don't think nostalgia alone is enough to keep something so popular.
I'm 18, so classic space more than twice as old as me. My nostalgia is mostly for Power Miners. But I still really like classic space (mostly the minifigures) because I find it very charming. I'm sure there are others like me.

Well, there's a lot more to those sets than their figures. I voted for Barracuda Bay, but was close to voting for the Razor Crest. However, I have no interest in the figures from Barracuda Bay, other than Tattooga. The figures from the Razor Crest are much more interesting to me. I voted for the orange spaceman over both of them though.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I agree with Barracuda Bay being the best set, which happens to be the biggest Lego set I ever bought. Mostly because I just wanted the ship, with the 1989 original roughly going for the same price currently on the aftermarket. I also bought the Creator Pirate Ship, which has really good alternate builds. In fact, I still have it in the Pirates' Inn mode.

So, while I get the nostalgia aspect for some of these choices, the Orange Spaceman feels rather bland in comparison to the other excellent minifigs on the list. I mean, we already got a vintage style Space minifigure set in the Lego Movie 2 line, and those colors were more appealing than orange. The minifigure blind bags had some great inclusions which surely deserved a more prominent spot on this list.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These polls are always faulty. The themes with the most collectors are naturally going to do better. Plus it changes results when you put 3-4 minifigures or sets from one theme into the poll because it divides up the fan base for that theme.

Star Wars had 5 minifigures on that list. I’d be willing to bet if you take 3-4 of those Star Wars figs off the poll, the Star Wars figure you left in there would have won.

No real problem with the 501st either; I know people have been waiting for that for a long time.

But for the minifigure, and I understand the vote is everyone's personal preference, but just a different color of an existing minifigure? No one method is going to be perfect but I think simply asking people to nominate whatever they wish, for whatever reason they wish, works quite successfully.

From your comment, it sounds as though you are perhaps suggesting that individual themes should be completely separated for consideration and then the winners of those polls should comprise the final selection. While that method is sometimes used by other outlets and does potentially provide broader representation of themes, it also means omitting numerous sets which are considered favourites by many people.

You mentioned that five Star Wars minifigures were sufficiently nominated to reach the final poll. Ultimately, does this not reflect their popularity? Artificially omitting some by restricting how many could be included seems unfair to me, pleasing though it might be to see superior variety in the themes which appear.

We have considered more complex systems for determining winners, including tournaments or similar, but the issue there is time. There is a limited window in which we can reasonably focus upon the best products of each year, between Christmas and New Year. Before then, the Advent Calendars and upcoming sets are our predominant focus while continuing the discussion too far into each subsequent year risks people losing interest.

Sometimes the simplest methods are the best, in my opinion.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

No way! All my picks—Christmas Bader, Mando BP and Bookshop—all ended up 5th. What a coincidence!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We need a proper Legacy theme.

Right now we've got Ninjago Legacy, and that's all well and good, but we could expand that even more.

Lots of people clamor and demand that LEGO brings back Classic Space or brings back BIONICLE or brings back Power Miners, but when they actually do revive an entire theme it never seems to work. BIONICLE G2 was a total flop, and the 2015-ish line of Pirates was forgotten almost instantly.

But that's not the case when they do one-off sets. Benny's Space Squad was a best seller, and as this article proves Barracuda Bay is one of the best received sets in history. The next line up of Ideas contains tributes to retro Castle and the 2004 Vikings theme.

It seems obvious to me that nostalgia makes a set or two of your favorite childhood theme a must-have, but full fledged line ups give too many options and are too costly to manage. If anyone from LEGO is reading, take a note from Barracuda Bay and *do more one-offs.* Don't bring back Power Miners, just remaster 8960. Don't bring back BIONICLE, just create a brick built bust of Tahu. So long as it is a tasteful and memorable tribute, w e ' l l e a t i t u p.

Genuine question: Why do people like the 501st Battle Pack? Are they primarily fans of the clone wars tv show? People young enough for the prequels to be “their” Star Wars? This is coming from a huge fan of the original trilogy.

I’m happy if people like something that I don’t, it’s just funny when something is extremely popular but has never been explained to me. Like clone troopers and Lego.

I have both and thought that too. But in fact the 2020 edition is not just an expansion covering the intervening years and with a different minifigure. It’s a proper revision with some different pictures, the mistakes fixed and greater inclusivity/political correctness (depending on your point of view). I do recommend it even if you have the earlier one.

SPACESHIP!!!

Or, better yet, a monorail. I'd love to see a base station for either Space Police (1989) or Blacktron (1988). Or something that ties all classic space factions together.

My thoughts exactly. I’m a huge SW fan, do t get the appeal of this set. We’ve had 501st troops before.

Seven years ago. In two sets. One is currently going for 120 dollars, the other for about 60."

So I get why there’s a rerelease to make those figs available. Doesn’t make it a great set though.

I think I already know what my 2021 best set of the year is going to be:

NC gardens!!
I just got the catalog and my gosh, it is beautiful. It might be just cuz I'm a die-hard Ninjago fan, but to me, it is one of the best sets ever!

I'm also not quite old enough to own any Classic Space firsthand. I don't have a single set, and only a few minifigures. I was relatively unaware of it when I was young. I have no reason to be nostalgic for it.

And yet, I think Classic Space is the distilled essence of everything that was ever wonderful about Lego—the purest, sweetest, most perfect form of this toy that ever was, or ever will be, made. Idea Book 6000 was published before I was born, but when I leaf through it, I think "THIS is Lego." Everything I loved about my late 80s/early-90s Space was the reverberating echo of Classic Space.

So am I nostalgic? Oh heck yes. When 10000 Guarded Inn was announced, my reaction was, "give me my Galaxy Explorer next!" I've been waiting 20 years. 70816 was great. So was 70841. But I still want my Galaxy Explorer. Pirates of Barracuda Bay was the nicest love-note we've gotten from Lego in years, and I don't know how they could ever top it for Classic Space, but I sure hope they try.

I'm honestly not sure why we have these articles, they always seem to be an excuse for ugly squabbling. It's totally subjective, folks! Even the winners got really quite small numbers of votes compared to how many people out there love Lego :)

Whatever you like best is awesome!

Good grief! It was just a poll, not a contest. Nothing 'won'. The question was "What is your favorite...", not "What is the best...".

Also, the big sets this year were awesome!"

I chose PoBB and my vote wasn't motivated by nostalgia as it is the first pirates set I've ever owned! It is an absolutely beautiful build, you can do so much with it, and it's both a beautiful display set and an incredible play set — I'm not at all surprised it won.

"It's a bit weird to see the same voting distribution for 2nd place and onward in all three categories, but then Pirates of Baracuda Bay just get a thousand more votes? And there's 300 more vote total for that category than for the minifig, and a full 1000 more than for the set below 40... I suspect there might have been a campaign outside the website to instill votes for that set. Not that it doesn't deserve a win, but that's a bit of an intense lead."

If you look at the commentaries when the polls took place, many persons mentioned that they do not care much for minifigs and, as such, decided not to vote for that segment. They however were partial to a favourite set for 2020.

Personally, I don't care much myself (even though I collect HP and would like to eventually have all the important characters - none of them are really a favourite or a 'must' own). That said, my 3 picks (child first and Ahsoka and Spaceman equal second) are in the top four!
I still don't own PoBB but as soon as the set becomes available here, I'll try to get it even though I'm not into the Pirates theme at all (I'm a Technic guy) - it is just such a nice set, versatile(island or boat), box art, play-ability and display-ability.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again.

So long as it is a tasteful and memorable tribute, w e ' l l e a t i t u p."

Encore! Encore! Like what that guy said! Lego Legacy: catchy name, tells exactly what it is. One year it is Classic Space, next is Castle, next is Pirates, next is Bionicles, next is Trains, next is Power Miners, next is Exo-Force, next is Vikings, next is Ultra-Agents... there are so many possibilities. As mentioned, one or maybe two (one large and one more affordable) set is manageable - and you only buy during the years when that theme is dear to you - not affecting too much your regular Lego buying. Usually companies pay good money for market research like that - here they get it for free!

@CapnRex101 and/or Huw,

There is a stat I would to see explored, if it is at all possible. Your database indicate the number and (nominal) value of all the sets owned by its members. This year was exceptional in terms of shopping as people were stuck at home (seems like this year will be a bit of the same). Would it be possible to quantify how many news set were bought let's say for the last five years and the total value of sets bought for the last 5 years and show (if it is statistically significant) how much bigger the purchases were this year? I thought this might be interesting to see...

I think they already got that message from the sales figures of the Benny's Space Squad set. Only question is are they willing to act on it and give us something like a Peter Reid-ish new rendition of something like 928/497 Galaxy Explorer.

And as for all those questioning the validity of the victory for the Orange Spaceman: like others have said, the poll was not about best but favorite minifigure. And just like with the sub 40 Dollar sets, where the winner objectively wasn't the best set, it was just the most popular.

By the way, some said the book was expensive. When I pre-ordered it, it was like 25 Euro, but when it was finally delivered the price had dropped to just shy of 20 Euro, which does not seem bad value at all to me.

Depends on what you want from a set. I have the ship in a bottle and love displaying it. Just got the bonsai and will be putting it together this weekend - that one too will remain on display. The pirate ship is great too, got that one for my son and he loves playing with it, the alt builds are nice too.

Personally I would go for the 31108 Pirate Ship I voted for it for best set of the year. However 75300 Tie Fighter is a great value for $40 and I think it may be a better bang for buck.

@jalc_45:
According to a LEGO Ideas blog post, Mark Stafford claimed the five classic Spacemen were given specific roles by the Classic Space set designers:

White (Jenny): pilots
Red: soldiers/explorers
Yellow (Kenny): scientists
Blue (Benny): commanders (yeah, think about that for a moment)
Black: spies

Stafford also proposed that green would be mech pilots, but that conflicts with all the Classic Space mech sets that were piloted by non-green Spacemen. Based on the teaser video and the Exo-Suit itself, a more logical role would be salvage. Oh, and have fun trying to fit "Pete" and "Yve" into the "-enny" naming convention, since those are the official names of the only two green Classic Spacemen ever produced.

For pink (Lenny), I figured HR might be a viable role. And orange would be Denny, the cook. An alternate role would be Health & Safety (orange or lime make the most sense for obvious reasons).

Thanks for this comp Brickset - exciting results.

it's so great to see how the love of Classic Space is still very much alive but the "only" thing preventing it from returning (SW) is saving the company :)

By in United Kingdom,

Non-licensed Lego themes manage to place in the top 10:
- 5 sets in the best under $40
- 5 sets in best sets of the year
- 3 in best minifigures (probably more difficult category for non-licensed)
Not bad at all!
Seems there is a sense of nostalgia in the selection (even the 501st contains some of it in addition to pirates, nintendo, spaceman etc.)?
Two pirate ships in the top 10 (you could include the razor crest too). Subversive audience clearly :).

I might be biased, but it feels as if the selection all across is rather diverse in taste, colors and styles?

By in United Kingdom,

Two of my picks came quite close to the bottom, but I'm glad to see that I was able to predict almost all the winners. I predicted PoBB and the 501st Battle Pack correctly, but my prediction of Baby Yoda or Ahsoka winning minifig of the year stopped me getting the full house. They weren't far off, but I completely forgot about the Orange Spaceman - of course it would win a Brickset poll.

What the heck are you smoking? No single theme is “saving the company” right now because they’re not in financial trouble right now. They have several themes that are raking in money hand over fist, and the only thing really holding them back is production capacity. And pandemic-related transportation woes. And regular customers who have had to back off their purchasing because they’re just having trouble paying their bills right now.

I think the popularity of Benny's Space Squad should have been the message.

The orange Space person seems more of a consolation price in that regard.

Shouldn't Lego Battles have given us a red Space person promo figure?
