Amelia Earhart Tribute GWP revealed

Amelia Earhart Tribute

©2021 LEGO Group

A forthcoming gift with purchase has been revealed by a South African certified store on its Facebook page, although it's since been removed.

40450 Amelia Earhart Tribute features the red Lockheed Vega 5b that the female pilot used to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932.

What's slightly puzzling is why now, in 2021? It's not an anniversary of that flight, her birth, or her death. Nevertheless, it looks to be an interesting model.

There's no word on when it will be a GWP: possibly March, but we are expecting an Easter-themed one to be available that month, so perhaps it'll be for just part of it.

Thanks to Robert at Promobricks for the news.

They probably have 150 units for continental Europe.

I hope the Easter GWP will be eggceptionally eggsecuted.

By in United Kingdom,

Interesting the Promobricks article links to the Lego Ideas 'I am Amelia Earhart' which although reached 10k was not approved in Oct 2018, possibly (but we will never know) because that plane was a fairly simple city construction, whereas this one looks far more stylized and special. I just hope there is space for Amelia to sit in the cockpit and the plane can be rotated to horizontal flight.

Welp, that's worth having postponed buying some January/February releases

Gravatar
By in United States,

I absolutely love this! When I saw that LEGO was making an Amelia Earhart tribute set, this was exactly what I wanted. So sad that I’m not able to reach the threshold on most all of the GWP sets. There are been some awesome sets that I really wanted to get my hands on, that were GWP sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Do we have any idea what big sets are coming in the next month that this might come with?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nice. Best scale aircraft I've seen in Lego, especially the treatment of the radial engine and propeller blades.
What are those wheel spats made from?
That's me holding back from buying Lego until this is available; got to rack up the order price: it'll be high.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Yeah I'll hopd off my purchases until this is available.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow I definitely want that. But it seems rather large for a GWP, doesn’t it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad I stalled on getting the Ideas Blacksmith set. I've bought a lot recently and thought, maybe there will be a nice GWP in a month or so. Now I just need it to be back in stock (or backordered) by March 1.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

That is a whole lot of cool.
She left from here in Newfoundland.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Nice set but here comes another very high spending threshold!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The base seems unnecessarily large, but I like it. Hopefully March GWP - I'll be buying a Porsche (a LEGO one).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's International Women's Day on March 8th so I would imagine it's to coincide with that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it and will probably try to get it, depending on how much you have to spend to get it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is gorgeous.

I’ve got plenty of items on my wish list so I will just choose from what’s in stock at the time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm guessing that the GWP threshold in the US will be either $150 or $200 for this set.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

After the white noise release I find nothing puzzling Lego does anymore.

Gravatar
By in Luxembourg,

In South Africa the Lego Certified Store has a threshold of R2500 for this GWP. That equates to approx EUR 140/USD 170/GBP 125.
So possibly it'll be available on LEGO.com with purchases from EUR/USD/GBP 150, similar to 40410 Charles Dickens Tribute.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Luckily this is only remotely related to that rejected LEGo ideas set. Which was based on a childrens book if i remember correctly. Still odd choice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wonder if this has anything to do with author Brad Meltzer. He had sponsored (I guess that’s the word, endorsed maybe?) a Lego Ideas submission some years back that got the 10K votes but didn’t make it past there.

10295 Porsche 911 will be available, if that's your sort of thing. I can't come up with anything else being released between now and May, so it could be a good time to catch up on previous sets.

To maintain the utmost accuracy lego.com will ensure it disappears from your cart after ordering.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Perhaps tied into new 18+ Space set launching April 1

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Got any more of them pixels?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Good luck finding it, I think the set vanished over the tropics!

To soon?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As there is no obvious reason for there to be an Earhart set, the next most obvious reason is that it is intended to be a GWP with a specific purchase (like the chariot was with the Colosseum).

Which raises the question of whether there will be aviation set(s) coming this year.

Bonus points if it mysteriously never arrives even after shipping

By in United States,

Even as a GWP, this is one of the more stellar sets this year. I've had a Corgi version for almost 20 years now (issued in 2003 as a part of a line commemorating 100 years of powered flight, which I got for my birthday that year). But, I'm curious as to why LEGO simply just didn't do an aviation theme. There are no dates that coincide with the flight, the Vega, or Earhart. This would be a theme that I would approve of, and would also do well with all of the age groups. Not too big as to be ridiculously expensive--but educational for kids (the instructions should be laid out like Architecture sets), and good display models for adults.

This could be a really good theme; with options such as the Wright Flyer (including the Wright Brothers), Sprit of St. Louis (with Lindberg) and Bleirot's monoplane (with Bleirot) for example. I'd like to see historic military aircraft (such as the Spitfire), but we all know that ain't gonna happen. But, who knows, we have the Sopwith and Red Baron in proper markings.

On another note, this one may be a really popular set. For once, I think I may end up trying to get an order over the threshold for the GWP. Usually, I just wait until they show up on Bricklink NIB for a price equal to a set of comparable size (basically, 10 cents a part or under).

Gravatar
By in United States,

So I'm guessing that this year's Collectable Minifigures, Series 21 71029-9 was a way of dropping a hint about this Gift With Purchase.
It makes me wonder if we'll be getting a Carmen Miranda tribute next (71029-12).

This year is the 100th anniversary of Amelia Earhart learning to fly and buying her 1st plane. So plenty good reason to have a stand-alone GWP, not tied to a specific set.

Next anniversaries are 2022 for an altitude record and 2028 for crossing the Atlantic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love it! Not something I would have predicted or expected for a GWP, kudos to Lego for the creativity.

That would be so awesome... My Sopwith Camel, Red Baron and Wright Flyer still have a place of honour on my shelves.

Gravatar

Looks great. Depending on the necessary threshhold I might have to finally pull the trigger and get the Barracuda Bay set.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Now, THIS is a GWP.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ambr:

That was based on a children’s book, which may have affected the decision, since it had to compete for an IP slot (they added a rule on the back end that says no more than I think 50% of the projects they accept can be licensed).

@stlux:
I was going to post those same things. January 3rd was her first flying lesson. However, her first plane was yellow, so I have no idea what this model is supposed to represent.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Aw heck yeah! I'll definitely be getting this (though depending on the GWP limit I might have to go for an aftermarket one)

Perhaps it could come with a new Technic aviation set, Hmmm... what are those US Marine Convertiplanes called? one of those would be good...

I like the concept and tribute, and it's a nice educational set to share with my kids, but I find the set itself not that good looking.

From Wikipedia: In January 1921, she (A L) started flying lessons with female flight instructor Neta Snook.

Gravatar

1000% yes.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

There was a time when Lego was asking people to submit suggestions of ideas of how they could do better for their "fans". I mentioned to them the possibility of developing a theme based on airplane - as mentioned above, there are so many options. One set per year on any aircraft and they could go on forever... Even just doing the aerobatics team aircraft of each country that have such a team would take a long time to fulfill. But since Lego asks but hardly ever follows the recommendations (see Classic Space, Castle, Pirates, monorail, etc, etc). There is no point losing much time trying to engage with Lego anymore. Every so often we get a surprise like this and it is fine but they are missing so many opportunities it's not even funny.

As is the case nowadays, you will have to place your order at 00:00:01 to have a slim chance to get this. Lego is currently suffering a blatant case of not having enough items for their promotions: January classic car 40448 was supposed to run for the whole of January. I placed an order on 1st of January at around 11:30pm and the stock was already depleted - either this is voluntary or somebody is not very good at forecasting - we'll probably never know.

Actually, Brad approached me to design a set based on one of his books. I picked Amelia Earhart, because I found her story to be so inspiring so the LEGO Ideas submission was an actual collaboration.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Will be nice to see the hi-res images eventually but I'm interested, $150 would be a reasonable threshold I think.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Spike730:
Nope, they’ve done puzzles now, too, remember?

@Alatariel:
I actually thought that had a decent chance at being approved, and I believe it was the only project in that entire review class that I would have been likely to buy. It was the smallest project of the group, it had zero relation to any previous Cuusoo/Ideas set, it wouldn’t have required tons of Q elements, and it was appropriate for all ages. I really do think the IP limit had something to do with it being rejected.

As for the woman herself...the Hollywood version of her story may be inspiring, but you don’t really hear the unpleasant parts (aside from the last bit, of course). The alcoholic father was no fault of her own, of course. But she inherited enough money that she shouldn’t have had to work a day in her life. What wasn’t spent on her flying hobby was either lost in a single bad business investment, or through general mismanagement of her trust. At one point she sold off her planes and gave up flying because she didn’t have any money left. The irony is it was put in a trust to keep her dad from drinking it away, but between herself and her mom (who was managing the trust for her), they lost every penny anyways.

Before we saw the first news of this GWP posted, I also didn’t know she had chronic sinusitis and headaches since before she started flying, and you have to wonder if she would have even been cleared to fly under modern rules. These health conditions did have a detrimental effect on her flying, so even if she’d succeeded in her circumnavigation attempt, she may have been flying on borrowed time.

It's a model of the Lockheed Vega 5B from her1932 transatlantic solo flight.

By in Australia,

I love this! Minifig looks suitably detailed including a possible new map piece. The plane is very well done, its about time we get more old aircraft from Lego!! The paddles look very good.

The only thing is the stand. WTF. It makes it look like the aircraft has somehow managed to crash and be stuck on its tail?? Absolute waste of pieces. Why black?? And a plane youd think they couldve just had it on the ground using the landing gear.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This is not big enough at all to fit a minifigure, so it'll be purely decorative. It doesn't interest me.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

For the "unsightly" stand, you can buy 5x the part 6239418 - brick 2x2 trans-clear for roughly USD$1.25 or 2x the part 6251285 for about the same price. Or just let it stand on its wheels on the platform. (Edit: Sorry, links for parts does not work but both are for transclear parts and will work on Lego.com)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego could just call it an anniversary of her death since nobody knows how long she survived after crashing. She could have died in 1941, for example.

"What's slightly puzzling is why now, in 2021? It's not an anniversary of that flight, her birth, or her death."
Why would they make a set to commemorate her death? LMAO.

In all seriousness, this looks like a very interesting GWP but I don't typically buy expensive sets so this is out of my league. I do wonder if they're doing a new face print for her or not-- either way, from what I can make out they're using another flesh-colored Minifigure in an unlicensed set. I don't have a problem with LEGO doing that, honestly, especially since the figure is based on a real person.

Don’t be sad; she’s just in stasis in the Delta Quadrant, after all.

Seriously though, I’m hoping enough Super Hero sets are out at whatever time this is the GWP, because - being an aviation enthusiast - this is really cool.

Thank you for clearing that up for me! I am a big fan of those books, my kids love them, and I was sorry that the set wasn’t made.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I think it looks pretty basic and ordinary - like a 4+ set at best. It wouldn't encourage me to buy a set at RRP from their online store.

Edit: Just went and looked at the plane its based on... hmmm well ok, I guess the plane itself isn't that complicated. Maybe if they had some chrome in there...

Gravatar

@Pongo:
The "spats" appear to be about five studs long, and brick-built using various curved slopes and inverted curved slopes.

@stlux:
Yup, I was able to figure that out (I was a bit pressed for time earlier). All I had to do was search for "Amelia Earhart red plane" and I got a _ton_ of different photos of that plane (which she also used to fly solo, nonstop across North America, another first for a female pilot). The other possibility (and it would have been a weird one) that I was considering was the plane that "attacked" her at an air show in Toronto around 1918 (a WWI ace was flying it and decided to strafe two spectators, one of whom was Earhart who stood her ground as the plane flew past). All the info I got on that plane was an Earhart quote that identified it as being red. But given the timing, that was probably a biplane.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

I thought it would be bigger, like 10226 Sopwith Camel big

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Magma:
Yeah, it was early days of aviation. First they had to figure out how to make them fly safely, and then they could work on jazzing up the designs. A few decades before this plane was made, monoplanes in general were very rare because the engines weren't very powerful, and monoplanes were a lot heavier than biplanes with comparable lift. Anyways, the Vega 5B was a cargo plane, so it was never really intended to be showy to begin with. I'd guess that the fact that it even had a cowl over the engine was more about fuel efficiency than aesthetics.

Gravatar

I would have preferred no display stand and a larger aircraft.

No co-pilot? Everybody seem to forget that Amelia had a co-pilot Noonan when they disappeared.

Gravatar

Wrong plane, and wrong flight. This is the plane she used to fly across the Atlantic and again across North America, both solo flights. She's not remembered for attempting to circumnavigate the globe, but because she attempted to do so after having already accomplished several "firsts" and having set several records.
