Free limited edition minifigure!

Posted by ,

Here's a press release about an opportunity to obtain a free limited edition minifigure:

Build your own game with the LEGO Microgame!

If you are in doubt whether to participate in the newest LEGO Ideas contest “Build your own game”, join fellow Unity beginners in the next Unity x LEGO Game Jam: Ideas Edition on Saturday, Feb. 13. During the 2,5-hour livestream you will discover how to build your customized LEGO Microgame using newly released LEGO Behaviour Bricks to help make a great contest submission.

Register today for free and learn what you need to participate by visiting the Game Jam web page. Check Unity or LEGO Ideas Facebook channels for more news around this fun live event.

Just to remind you, besides two grand prize winners of the LEGO Ideas contest and two runner-ups, two entries in this contest will be randomly selected as winners too. No reason not to get involved!

By the way, EVERY participant of the “Build your own game” contest will receive a custom, limited edition LEGO Unity Minifigure!

As millions of people prepare for the Lunar New Year next Friday, Feb. 12, we want to help celebrate this festive occasion and release the LEGO Microgame “Year of the Ox” free expansion pack no later than Friday, Feb. 5. Greet your players with a giant “talking” ox, moo-ve them with a beautiful ancient Chinese vista and fill the night sky with colorful fireworks. But don’t get too close to that fireworks machine – it might spell bad luck! Just visit the Unity Asset Store to download and import to your game.

Finally, if you want to hear more about the origin and the future of the Unity x LEGO Microgame, listen to Episode 5 of the LEGO Bits N’ Bricks podcast.

This looks very interesting! Might try it

So going by the picture, your typical Unity gamer is a guy who has the severed head of a woman next to him! :~O

This competition may seem daunting but you do not need to build everything from scratch, there are plenty of starter mods and help to get you going at https://learn.unity.com/project/lego-template as well as the above links.

It's more about how you use and extend these components in your own creativity. To give you an idea about how others have done this check out the entries so far at https://ideas.lego.com/challenges/6811cf30-f944-4dfa-8714-9b38be6fbb52?query=&sort=top which have links to the microgame to play and leave comments.

Sounds about right.

EVERY participant receives the free minifigure? Huh.

I had no interest in this contest before; but if there are minifigures for everyone, I might just see about throwing something simple together with no intention of actually winning. Just for the free minifigure xD

I see boxes with the Unity logo in both prize packages. Do you have to buy something to participate, or is the minimum required to earn a minifig something you can do for free?

I would have tried it, but you need a 64-bit operating system to run unity.

The Lego Ideas contest page says that all you need to participate is "The free LEGO Microgame from Unity" (there's a link to it just below the 'how to participate' heading on that page); though you also need an account on the Unity Play platform in order to publish your entry, and I couldn't tell you if that costs or not.

Ooh cool...

When this system was first released I thought it would be a cool opportunity to create a "LEGO Racers 3" but never got around to learning it. This might be a good excuse to make a demo!

Yep. I'll be coming up with something that's garbage just to get the minifigure...in fact, I may even see how terrible I can possibly make it. :)
I suspect we're not alone in throwing crap at the contest just for the minifig.

I though of doing this as well, but it feels like a little too much time put into skills and tools I have no interest in, to get a torso with a print that I have no connection to.

Looks like they are starting to give out prizes to random participants, which is a great change. A few people post extremely ambitious entries that are as discouraging as they are inspiring. I've entered these contests for fun only, but having some chance at a prize is still nice.

Maybe they will start separating out digital and physical builds next...

Is no one going to mention the beheaded woman on the floor?

This reminds me of when Microsoft was paying people (mainly students) to publish ANYTHING on their app store so they could boost their app numbers. I don't think LEGO has anything like that to gain from this, but I'll gladly take a Unity minifig!

By in United States,

I've been experimenting with the microgame, but I don't want to enter the contest because I don't care about a torso print. And why in an adults only contest are two of the rewards babyish Mario sets?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

On the Ideas page there's a picture of a chick minifig with the disembodied male head on the floor, so it's all fair I guess :D

Why the head sitting behind him?

I presume the Free Minifigure consists of one torso and two heads, so recipients can have the Unity figure as either a guy or girl depending on personal preference. It DOES look kinda awkward when they depict it like that, however xD

By in Germany,

The prospect of a free exclusive minifig is always nice, but after having read through all you have to install, register to/create an account, etc., I have decided to let others have that chance.
I am simply to old to even fully understand what this is all about, let alone wrap my head around the technicalities. But thanks for the heads up, if I was twenty or thirty years younger I might have a go at it. ;-)

Something you can do for free. Unity makes its money when people release a fully developed game, where they take something like 5-10% of the sales. If you're a gamer (even just simple puzzle games on mobile), you've probably played Unity games without realizing it.

Edit: Unity has the "asset store" which includes many, many free things you can use. The prize includes asset store money, which can be used to buy premium assets. Most premium assets are from individuals who have listed on the marketplace. They are completely unnecessary for this contest, and honestly, even if you were learning unity to a professional level, I'd still recommend against buying any, using just free ones as placeholders.

@ThatBionicleGuy:
Could be worse. The extra head could be mounted on the end of a stick...

@Kaivian:
So, I can burn some of my limited free time to jump through some hoops and get a minifig (plus a severed head) that doesn't cost me a penny.

By in United States,

I was interested in doing this until I realized that this wasn’t really programming. Then it seemed like a whole lot of effort for a corporate sponsored minifigure, and not even a corporation I have ever heard of.

That said I did program some Alexa skills when she first came out, and Amazon has been paying me in the ballpark of $50 a month ever since. Perhaps if Lego offered free minifigures for life I might be intrigued. Or even just an orange Classic Space minifigure for less than $30.
