Monkie Kid's RC Race

This year's Monkie Kid sets have been added to LEGO.com and a hitherto unknown one has been revealed.

The theme has been devoid of entry-level pocket-money sets so the release of 40472 Monkie Kid's RC Race is to be welcomed, even if it's not particularly exciting. It does, however, provide a new version of the Kid, along with another major protagonist, Mei.

It, and the other MK sets, will be available at LEGO.com from 1st March.

I've added the additional images to our database so you can now get a good look at the awesome 80024 The Legendary Flower Fruit Mountain.

This small set is actually adorable.

Three podium spots. Three figures. But only two RC cars.

The sets cute but I'd have to make that third car and grab a Classic Space radio.

The horn component is nice. Not sure how new it is, or if it has been around before Monkie Kid.

The prices in Euro are looking much better!

so this is one of the figure sets on a card like the one with pizza eating spider man, right?

I don’t believe it! An affordable Minnie Kid set! Not that bad either!

I hope that MK has a double sided head, going to be tricky racing with his eyes shut.

Little set reminds me of some of the Racers ones with Ferrari drivers from the 2000s

I can't wait to get 80024. Happy to see more of Mei!

By in United States,

I'm excited for Flower Fruit Mountain, but probably just as excited for some of the others!

80018 is cheaper than the cheapest set from last year, helping to make the theme more accessible even if the price of the full range is still much higher on average than other themes. I like that as the cheapest "full" set, it still has a unique spider-minion not available in the others. And as "two bike" sets go, the bulky cloud bike with disc shooters that can fire to either side is still pretty unique.

80020 is a remarkably fresh aircraft design. It's much more substantial-looking than Mei's previous bike, and I love some of the techniques like the SNOT construction on the horse head at the front or the layered Nexo tiles on the wings.

80022 looks like an absolute beast, not the first spider mech Lego's done but definitely one of the largest and most substantial. I love the two-story interior in the rear of the body, and the articulated front legs (controlled by moving the banner in the center) look like fun.

And while we had pictures of it a while before the others, 80023 still looks great. Such a neat evolution of the container ship headquarters from the first wave, with great features including a rotating turret that can be aimed and fired with one hand.

They don't all do it for me, though. I was sort of mixed on 80021 from the earlier pics, and while I still love the little arcade build, the $80 price point feels like too much to swallow for that and a lion-dog mech that feels like it could still use a couple more rounds of polish. And 80019 feels like a decent build and value for money, but with no new figures at all (reusing Red Son, MK, and Bob from last year's sets instead of their new variants), it feels like it might be aimed more at newcomers who might have missed out on those the first time around.

It was initially designed for cows and released with the 10193 Medieval Market Village and 7637 in 2009. It later reappeared in the Minotaur and the Hun Warrior collectable minifigures (2012 and 2014, resepctively), before coming back in full force last year. Last year was the first time it was released in any color other than white.

So looking at Flower Fruit Mountain it looks like one could modify it to create the Inferi Cavern for Harry Potter. The backside view of the Caverns inside the Mountain appear they could work well for that.

That is actually a pretty cute set.

I imagine it'll be about $300?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

80024 is the Temple of Airjitsu of this theme, in that it’ll appeal to those builders that don’t love all the techno babble fluff but like the more traditional aspects of the theme.

The PPP on the bigger Monkie Kid sets was usually better than other themes, it’s the smaller ones that were overpriced

Why is this theme so expensive

This should cost 10$ and include one more figure.

That's what I'm asking myself too.
I was looking forward to get those monkeys from 80024, but after seeing the price, I'm not sure anymore.

Did anyone else notice the Target logo on the uniforms? Will this be a Target exclusive?

That horn component has been a thing since Vikings.

This is not the same horn piece from Vikings. It's the shorter one that was introduced for cows in the Lego City Farm sets.

@mdtvandy: It's not a Target logo. The bottom is square, not just a ring.

$12.99 USD for what should be, at most, a $9.99 set? Might be worth it, as I really like the Mei minifigure. But as @BlueStation said, why is this theme so expensive??

It's almost a Target logo, but it's like the shape of a half-round tile, not a circle

Well, in the case of 40472, I don't think this is an issue particular to this theme — the numbering and piece count suggest to me that it's not a standard set, but rather a supplementary minifig blister pack like 40343, 40374, or 40453. And if that is the case, it's actually cheaper than some of those sets have been.

As for the other sets, the price per piece seems to be in a relatively normal range — higher than you'd typically expect for a theme like Ninjago, but lower than you'd typically expect for a theme like City.

That said, it IS quite unusual that there are so many large, expensive sets compared to smaller, inexpensive ones. Other large themes usually to have lots of impulse-priced sets like LEGO City "great vehicles", LEGO Friends "play cubes", LEGO Ninjago spinners and "epic battle sets", LEGO Star Wars "battle packs", etc. I'm honestly not sure why LEGO has adopted such a different strategy with the set sizes and prices in this theme than they usually do. :/

By in United States,

I suspect the reason Monkie Kid sets are large and expensive (on average) is because they are aimed at the Chinese market. Lego sets might be too expensive for the average Chinese person, therefore they're a "luxury" item, so they "need" to be expensive to attract attention.

It was available in brick yellow in 7199 as well, in 2009. They're used for the horns on Mola Ram's headgear-thing.
Interestingly, the part number changed when it was re-introduced in 2020: originally (2009-2014) it was 64847 (https://brickset.com/parts/design-64847), but now (since 2020) it's 67258 (https://brickset.com/parts/design-67258). Not sure why parts sometimes get multiple design numbers though.
