Amelia Earhart Tribute

©2021 LEGO Group

The much anticipated 40450 Amelia Earhart Tribute is now the gift with purchase at LEGO.com until the 14th of March in all regions. If you've not yet done so, check out our review.

If you've been waiting for this GWP before pulling the trigger on the March releases then my advice is not to hang about ordering because LEGO's track record as far as availability of GWPs is concerned is not good at the moment.

The spend threshold to obtain it is £100/$100/€100. Shop now at LEGO.com »

#Ad: Brickset will receive a small commission from purchases made via the links in this article.

By in United States,

I’m setting alarms now. I don’t want to miss this one. :o)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Following on from the 23:00 GMT bit: if you’re in the UK and it’s not adding to your basket at that point despite the site advertising said promo, *wait until midnight*. Promos usually get activated for baskets per each country’s timezone, so better safe than sorry if it doesn’t show up at first!

By in Switzerland,

The more news articles Huw posts about these GWPs, the faster they will be out of stock.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll finally be ordering the 10261 Roller Coaster to get this one. It's my birthday and will mark 365 days since I've sat down to eat inside a restaurant, so I feel I deserve it.

By in United States,

Are GWPs still *that* hot? I thought the Monster Book of Monsters would have been a fast item (especially after it disappeared from Barnes & Noble), but I got one a month ago with no problem. I'm hoping this one can wait at least a few days for me to get to the mall.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

I wonder what the threshold will be in Denmark?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Tick tick ticking down to midnight. Still deciding between the Porsche and Sesame Street, but the Porsche will likely be around longer, so will probably wait on that for later.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I could see the threshold in Canada being $125 or more since Lego value this set at $27CAD

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I am so glad I was able to snag this from the local Lego Certified Store (who were doing it a while back) alongside the new modular police station. Great little set.

Probably bc that was limited to HP only.

By in Canada,

Honestly, I always look for the GWPs but I don't see the appeal of this one. It's OK, but even the Easter bunny carrot house later this month is nicer.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Should be picking this up with 10258 and 10262 tonight. Buying them both before retirement which will almost certainly be imminent for both...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Get the GWP, sell it on eBay for £25, then your £100 purchase is £75. 25% discount on Chinese festival set... Yes please!!

The Monster book of Monsters sold out within a day or so, and got put back up a few days later

@yellowcastle:
You’re setting alarms _now_? I did that earlier this week when I saw that the Octan coin was already sold out in Europe and I hadn’t cashed in points for a code (fortunately, the US seems to be swimming in the things). One alarm for tonight, one for April 1st, and one for May 1st, so I can make sure to get this plus the last two coins.

@ResIpsaLoquitur:
MBoM was HP only at a time when the only HP sets that were new were the four books (which sold out in about a day, I think) and the mosaic (which was not triggering the set, probably resulting in a lot of orders shipping without it, or not being placed because people thought it was sold out. The only other large set that was still in stock was the microscale Hogwarts Castle, which was waaaaaaay over the threshold. Nothing was even on backordered status until the following day, so it was hard to even qualify for that GWP.

On top of this, Barnes & Noble had already had it as a GWP, then as a retail set, so many people who were chasing that may have already snagged one in 2020. Compare this to the Vintage Car, which went live the same day. That was a general GWP, and several Jan1 releases were big enough to qualify for one without even trying (Modular Police Station was one of the big ones), plus anyone who earned MBoM probably got the car, too. It was only released through LEGO.com, so almost nobody had it in 2020 outside of review copies. Bricklink listings proved that many resellers stocked up on inventory, as some had 20+ copies listed.

I was trying for both, but didn’t care about the House books. Unfortunately, the one thing I did want (the Burrow) was out of stock on Jan1, so all I got was one VC. The next day (Jan2) I found out about the mosaic not triggering the MBoM, so I called LEGO.com to report the problem. At that time, Hogwarts Castle was triggering both GWPs, and I learned that several HP sets had been pushed to Backorder status. I waited maybe 60-90 minutes before actually sitting down to backorder the Burrow, and VC was already sold out.

On the plus side, I eventually found out VC was listed as backordered on the order, even though it didn’t show up in my cart. And even though I fully expected it to be cancelled, they did actually ship me one for my Jan2 order.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I got mine and the 911. This now beats my record for most expensive single Lego set purchase.

Thanks for the reminder!

Also, curse you for the reminder!

Nice, I’ve been planning to buy barracuda bay to get this. I have a trip to the Lego store planned for tomorrow!

Remember to use your AMEX £20 off a £129 spend if you managed to save to your card

Gravatar
By in United States,

May place an order if 10277 triggers this. Otherwise it'll be a tough pass.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Do TLG even want to sell anything atm? Our entire wish list is either "backorder" or "temp out of stock" - there's nothing we can add to the basket!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

11pm, still adds dots frame but when you empty the basket it says Amelia Earhart available. Re-add item to basket, dots frame. Grrrr.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Same here. Says it's available but not added to basket. I can only assume it'll add it to the basket at midnight, once it's March 6th...

Gravatar
By in France,

Order made, with Amelia's plane added to basket :-)

Gravatar

not happening here, either, yet can see the banner

Or that it adds in the background. I've had orders before where it doesn't show the GWP in the bag, but then it is present in the order confirmation.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Currently it will say "Get a FREE LEGO® Amelia Earhart Tribute set with purchases over £100.*" if you have less than £100 in your cart, but when you go over, the message disappears but the GWP doesnt add yet. Looks like we gotta wait till midnight here in the UK.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well this is frustrating.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not risking checking out without it in the basket, given it's still March 5th and it says it's available from 6 March... I can just imagine that conversation with customer service going well...

Gravatar

Same here. I can see the banner but it's not adding to basket

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's working in Europe but not in the UK.......Yet!!!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Just got mine, added to the basket and was visible in the checkout. Hopefully everything will be okay :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It also has the brown banner saying its free now over £100* but still isnt adding at basket or checkout

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

"You've qualified for a FREE Amelia Earhart Tribute (40450)". My kind of poetry.

Gravatar

I got it too, I'm so excited to build it!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Soo... while we in the UK wait for midnight, how's everyone doing? Got any plans for the weekend? (hah!)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It says from the 6th, and all past GWPs have been from midnight in the relevant country. It's only the main set releases that tend to be 23:00.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The stock is going and the GWP is not adding, very frustrating!

I can understand that, although when this happened to me last time, there were two GWPs available - so at the time, the basket only showed the chocolate box, and the year of the ox was only shown in the confirmation.

Looks like a similar situation now - in the UK, we still have the mini frame available as a GWP. If it's only showing the first applicable GWP, then that's what appears, and the Earhart doesn't.

Note that the rest of Europe doesn't seem to have the mini frame available, so the first applicable GWP for them is the Earhart.

If I add it after midnight and it's not in the basket, I can argue with customer services that I ordered on the 6th and I should get it. I don't really have as strong an argument if I order it on the 5th!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I guess after all the complaints about the Porsche GWP running out before midnight, they are back to midnight in the UK, you just have to hope that it's still in stock.

Although I agree that maybe the system isn't good enough to show 2 free items at once.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I currently have things in my basket and I'm just refreshing until the plane appears. Does that work or do you have to start from an empty basket?

The weird thing is I'm sure it has shown two GWPs in the basket some time ago. I just know that my most recent order that had two GWPs only showed one in the basket (and I distinctly remember trying to add multiple times to get it to appear, and then just decided to purchase anyway without it - and then it showed in the confirmation).

Lol, now back in stock. I think we are adding and deleting the same items to our baskets. Clearly there are more of us than items available. I ain't removing it from my basket this time :)

There was no way that the SLF was going to last long with this GWP. I'm kind of surprised any stock ever made it to the GWP to begin with.

Gravatar

Back to 6 now, Dots was included as was the Octan coin.

Spring Festival is back now too, as said above.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ha! Foiled again. Now it's changed to out of stock whilst still in my basket. Still ain't removing it.

This is the first time I've had the "pleasure" of partaking in the LEGO lottery, normally I read all about them the next day. I think that's more fun, I need to go back to doing that.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Got it :D Now back to the movie (had to pause it due to LEGO related stress).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ordered the Medieval Blacksmith, together with Dots and Plane GWPs :)

Then I went back in and ordered just over £50 worth of smaller items that I wanted, and got another free Dots GWP!

Gravatar

Got both the dots and the plane GWP

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Medieval Blacksmiths ordered with the Amelia Earhart, Dots and the Octan Coin.... good times! :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm happy for those who managed to get the Spring Lantern Festival. I bought it on 1 Jan (my first ever first-day purchase!) when it was already on back order. It turned up in early Feb, and it's a nice model!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Just made an order ... I hope DPD don’t lose the parcel like my order from 1st Jan ... I never got the Ideas Car and the HP Book of Monsters as a result :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

All done Sesame Street!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yes, got it too, had to remove spring latern and re add it though. Weird it went out of stock then came back?

By in Portugal,

I'm a bit sceptical about Lego's website functionality, but today I had a pretty good experience. Very smooth transaction, all went well!

So, I have 1 Amelia flying to Portugal, and the also amazing and spectacular 21324 for my birthday... In June!!! =)))

The Amelia set will be a gift for a great friend of mine, that recently decided to get back to the Lego hobby, he deserves it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very exciting, congrats everyone. Wish we had SLF avail here in the U.S. :o)

Gravatar
By in Norway,

SLF says available on webpages and also when I placed the order. Received the order confirmation but then I follow the link in the email to the order it says back order. Hope they sort it out.

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Had the Amelia Earhart set in the shopping cart. After payment the order shows 40417 Year of the Ox and 30411 Chocolate Box & Flower as the bonus sets... and no Amelia Earhart!
Costumer service, here I come...

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ It's a gift with purchase, which means that it is a set that comes with certain other sets in stores. If you want it on its own, I suggest Bricklinking it eventually.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Vilhelm22:
I looked into a few options to get the Routemaster for Black Friday because I figured its days were numbered and didn't want to miss my chance. Bond released the following year, but with these D2C sets, strength of sales is what primarily determines how long they last. If the sales profiles are similar, Bond will probably retire a year after the Routemaster because it was released a year later.

Whatever the case, though, Spectre was probably out on home video when they started designing the Aston Martin, and No Time To Die has been pushed back to sometime later this year. It'd be a shame if that set came and went without a single new Bond film being released, kinda like how the BttF DeLorean was retired and sold out several months before October 21, 2015 (the only retail product in stores at the time was the Marty McFly Dimensions pack, since Doc Brown didn't release until January 2016).

@Turbulence:
That just looks so wrong...

@RikTheVeggie:
So buy something that's backordered. You'll still qualify for the GWP. If you don't want to wait for it, or you're nervous that they'll end up cancelling the GWP because of stock issues, tack on something small to trigger a shipment. That's what I did with Monster Book of Monsters. I backordered the Burrow to qualify for it, and tossed the Joker Bricksketch in to force an early shipment.

@Paperballpark:
Carts don't appear to be dynamic. To get the GWP to show up in the cart, you'll have to force an update in the cart. A simple way of doing this is to just adjust the quantity of a set up and down repeatedly, so you don't have to actually leave the cart.

@cucumber:
I have, in the past, had as many as four different GWPs displaying in the same cart. On January 2nd of this year, I was able to get Monster Book of Monsters and Vintage Car to display in my cart by just adding the microscale Hogwarts Castle. The system is capable of doing it, but you may be experiencing first-hour-glitchiness.

@LinuxBrickie:
I doubt stock is actually reserved for you just because you have the set in your cart.

@bigospedros:
I think I got your Vintage Car. I placed an order on the 2nd after VC had stopped triggering, but it showed up as backordered when I checked my order status on LEGO.com, and it arrived last month.

@gman13579:
The offer details didn't say it was an online exclusive. Besides, they've mostly done in-store exclusives in recent months.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Porsche GWP was sold out well before midnight. So you have to try before incase LEGO launch it early, like they have done a number of times.

Don't feel too bad about the spring festival, mine was cancelled.

Now I have to ring them up (on a landline because the stupid 00 number costs money on a mobile, guess how I know that one) because I can't use the Octan coin code again on the more expensive replacement order.

For someone meant to sell a fun product, LEGO sure have mastered the art of how to suck the fun out of anything.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@TheOriginalSimonB:
I stayed up to order the Nebulon B Frigate when it released at midnight, dozed off, and woke up about 10 after. Limit was three, which I split up into three orders (I did the same for Bespin Duel, and one of those arrived crushed, plus I've had a few orders get drenched by rain). One of those got cancelled. If I had been able to place those orders as soon as the set went live, I'd probably have gotten all three.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I wonder if i'll have the joy of waiting 4+ weeks to be able to use my paypal funds again like last time they cancelled an order.

The online order and fulfilment experience of buying from LEGO is so bad right now, it's like they contracted it out to the UK Government.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@cucumber:
Yeah, I never understood that one. I've made purchases using Paypal, immediately been issued a tiny refund (I mean, we're talking pennies), and equally immediately been told that the funds are being held for some reason that was never really explained.

Gravatar

I think that was only because it was a gift linked to a specific purchase, rather than to a specific time, so it launched at 23:00 because the Porsche did.
I've yet to see any general GWP launch before 00:00 on the day specified. They have the release date in the T&Cs.

I finally got Amelia to add to basket at midnight and my PayPal receipt received at 1 min past midnight shows Amelia. But my Lego receipt received 8 mins later doesn't. There's clearly plenty available so not really a problem is it and I'm sure many split their orders to get more promotion sets."

Not according to the many people in this thread who've missed out, including from the UK.

COVID is affecting virtually every part of mass online retail, and robo-scalping is rife. Why don't you leave your 2nd one for someone else?

I don't think anyone has missed out on the GWP the Spring Lantern Festival has been talked about being out of stock when people want it. But the plane is still available

I wanted 2, that's why I did it and I'm sure there's many more that have split orders to get more promotions, I'm just the only one to mention it on this thread.
If its a problem then Lego should only allow one per account....

As ever GWP is limited to one per household - read the T&Cs. I've done multiple orders in a promo period before and only ever received 1 GWP.

Very true.... but this is the internet, so if facts don't fit an argument, new facts are made up!

But if I place another order today I'll be sure to press the 'no gwp thank you' button, if only I could find it!

Well another, ultimately ok but stressful shop for me..... on Bricksets advise i checked the website about 11:15pm... and added various items..... The Amelia item was all over the website but not in the basket. As I got going and at £99 I noticed a yellow banner in the basket screen saying free GWP for £100*..... when I reached £100 it dissappeared but nothing appeared in the basket. I placed my order and awaited the confirmation, which in previous promotions has then included the GWP.... I went to bed... This am confirmed email and order on the site, no GWP.... Order confirmed at 00:09. I then phoned Customer services and within 3 mins they placed a £0 order just for the set for me...... ok, but not very slick.

I took it as being that the asterisk showed it was subject to t&c's which would include the dates (if you click the banner it did specify the dates). So it was not going to work until it was actually the 6th.

How did you phone customer services in the middle of the night, or did you ring at 9am?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@BrickRandom :
I talked to a couple of the LEGO Store employees about that. I was told that sometimes a $100 GWP will work on a $99.99 set, sometimes it'll work with anything over $99 (so you could buy 20 keychains for a total of $99.80), and other times they can't even bypass the threshold. They didn't sound like they knew when or why this happens either.

Oddly, I just checked, and adding the $99.99 10266 Lunar Lander to my cart triggers the GWP in the US. The tradeoff is, Gingerbread House is "Out of Stock" in the US, and unlikely to be available again unless it comes back for a third holiday season (the last time I remember that happening was the train, which was probably only because they needed a train to go with the train station).

@Paperdaisy :
In the last couple years, as long as you saw the GWP land in your cart with a backordered item, you could expect to receive it when that item started shipping again, even if the GWP had long ago sold out. However, there's always the odd chance that their stock levels will be off and the last few orders to ship could end up having their GWP cancelled. GWPs rarely ship by themselves unless they're the only thing left to ship. If the order gets filled with multiple shipments, barring a rare case where a GWP is on backorder (I just had that happen with Vintage Car, which is the only time I know of where this has happened), it should ship with the first box out the door.

One quirky situation I think I've run across is that Bits & Pieces and online Pick-A-Brick orders aren't supposed to count towards earning GWPs, but I believe they might trigger a GWP to ship by itself if the rest of the purchase is backordered. All B&P/PAB orders ship from Europe, but GWPs in North America don't. Since the first item to ship triggers delivery of any available GWPs, I believe they'll ship from a local warehouse. I have no idea how this would work in Europe, if everything ships from a single warehouse.

That brings up another potential GWP-only situation in the US, at least. I've recently discovered that there are LEGO warehouses in at least two different states. If one warehouse has the last remaining stock of a GWP, but has run out of whatever set you ordered to qualify, they might have to ship from different warehouses.

@kfr :
There's no way of knowing. We don't get to see stock levels, so our only real indicators are fan response, qualification threshold, and historical context. There was a ton of chatter for both Dickens and Vintage Car, and both sold out fairly quickly. A $35 GWP will, by necessity, have much greater available stock than one with a higher threshold. And we know from past experience that Black Friday GWPs usually don't stick around very long, and that the two Ideas GWPs have proven to be very popular as well.

So, my suggestion is, if someone really wants this GWP and plans to make a qualifying purchase, don't delay unless you need to wait for your next paycheck to clear.

@Brainslugged :
Take no chances. Call S @H and find out what they can see on their end.

@DoonsterBuildsLego :
Your experience may be specific to the UK. I've regularly split orders to get 2+ GWPs, and never had any problem doing so in the US, even when I did it all via S @H . Even if that's the case for the UK, lifetime limits are only applied to S @H orders. If you walk into a LEGO Store, you are only limited to one per person per day per store. For someone living in Chicago, there are about five stores in the greater Chicago area, two of which are less than an hour apart, so it'd be easy to hit multiple stores.

They had something like that for the Shadow ARF Trooper several years ago. There was a small checkbox added somewhere during the checkout process. If you clicked it, you signaled that you actually did want the free minifig. If you chose not to check it, or more likely, didn't notice that it was there, you missed out. That one didn't go over very well, but I guess if they really wanted to do this, allowing people to opt out instead of requiring them to opt in would save them from irate phone calls.

I rang them at 9am.... i was trying to leave as the order as late as I could with the risk of the GP selling out...... after all it looked like it was available......my order was actually processed at 00:09...... but id gone to bed by then. So technically within the offer period. Anyway they were very nice and I am hoping all will be well in a few days when the order and the GWP arrives.... I can see both "in Warehouse" which is normal.

I am sure we can MOD this to make her fit ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@OttoT:
Based on minifig height being six feet, this set is incredibly accurately scaled. The problem comes with the width of a minifig, which when you add in arms hanging on each side, is at least 3x what it should be for an accurately scaled figure. Then instead of having a thin hull, this is a solid mass of parts to achieve the tapered shape. If you want a plane that can actually seat seven like the real thing, you're probably going to need to scale it up 1.5-2x. Go much bigger than that, and it'll look like a 737.

I finally broke down and bought Hogwarts 71043, mainly because both Police Station and Book Shop are out of stock. Got ready to check out and realized I had forgotten to go through the referral link, so I cleared my cart and came back here, and did it again. Hopefully you guys see the referral.

As a status FYI, I just placed this order here in the US, and got both the Amelia Earhart and the Monster Book in my order.

I had both GWP showing in my UK basket at 00:15, went to shop for one more small thing and lego.com started playing up. Whenever I was logged in to use some points the icon showed X number of items in the cart but trying to view the cart and pay it was suddenly empty and any attempt to add something gave an "unexpected error"!
Tried three browsers, two on desktop (Windows Firefox LTS and Chrome) and on on tablet (Android, normal Chrome) but no: if I'm logged in I can not buy anything!

Yes,browsers up to date, deleted all the stored cookies. No change.

Does anyone else have this sort of problem?
What browser will LEGO.com work with? Please don't say Edge is the only one on Windows.

@ PurpleDave :
I checked, but the Lunar Lander by itself also doesn't trigger the GWP for me. So it seems the US shop and European shop apply the threshold differently (at least for this one). Fits what you said, the threshold does not seem to be applied in a consistant way.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@shaase said:

Canada = $130

Gravatar
By in United States,

@BrickRandom:
It'd be nice if they just knocked each threshold down by 1 and strictly applied it. So in the US, it'd be $34, $49, $74, $99, $149, $199, etc. It'd be almost impossible to fall short by just a penny or two. Even for the $199 threshold they set for the big tote bag, buying 100 copies of something priced at $1.99 would exactly hit the mark. Basically, you'd have to buy stuff on clearance with odd prices to just barely fall short.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was told once by a LEGO store employee that you must meet or exceed the actual threshold (eg, $100.00) when buying licensed sets, but that non-licensed sets can trigger a GWP at a lower threshold (eg, $99.99). But I'm not sure if she was referring to the purchased set(s) being licensed, or the GWP being licensed. Either way, she said it was about corporate licensing partners being more controlling of the offers.

I had the same issue. It showed both GWPs in the basket when I placed my order on day one.
Upon checking my email confirmation I noticed only the Dots Frame was included. I rang Customer Services, who were very helpful, and they have added it for me separately. That was yesterday, so they are still in stock.

It looks like it didn't go smoothly for others too, ironically having placed my order on the cusp of 5th/6th after reading a Brickset article saying they start at 23:00 the day before...with it being processed on 6th and no Amelia I phoned the next day and they added. Amelia arrived yesterday but the Lego order hasn't yet...…..
