LEGO Ideas GWP competition winner announced

Posted by ,

A few weeks ago LEGO Ideas invited us to vote for a model that will be a gift with purchase sometime in the future.

The winning entry has just been revealed on the LEGO Ideas blog: bulldoozer's delightful The Adventures of the USS Cardboard, which accumulated 2869 votes, around 700 more than the second place entry, Classic Space logo.

It looks to be a fun set and a worthy winner. Are you looking forward to the opportunity to acquire it?

Man this looks to be a great GWP. Even if they do stickers instead of prints, lots of fun parts and a great final product. Super inspiring and fun set too.

By in Puerto Rico,

It looks cool but man do these Classic Space Fans take ownership on every voting poll, what gives?

By in United Kingdom,

I didn't vote for this one but it's still very cute, and I hope to get it. I can definitely see why this won, even though it wasn't my first choice. Fingers crossed all those details make it to the final set, whether printed or as stickers!

We love our classic space that’s why :D

Gravatar

The one I voted for, yay! He was also the creator of Sesame Street

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Really COOL!!!

Gravatar

Very nice! Congrats to the winners and a wonderful job by all builders involved.

For the first time something I voted for won!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Pretty cool!

Gravatar

Yessssssss!!!!!

Gravatar
By in Romania,

I'm happy with the pick even though it's not the one I voted for. Curious to see how they will redesign it since it's using the old style hinges with the thin teeth that break easily.

3 of these have the classic space man in red which was missing from the lego movie pack. If Lego did a mini fig pack with red, black, blue that went with the pink, white, yellow we already had it would make a lot of people happy and would stop people trying to get a new red helmet released in any way they can.

The theme of the GWP competition was "Out of this world space builds" so the space theme is on purpose. ;-)

This was my favorite, glad it won.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Yes, I am looking forward to the opportunity to acquire it.

Gravatar

Spaceman Spiff reporting for duty !

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The top three were my top three too. I'll be very interested to see how LEGO translates it into a real set, they did a pretty good job with the previous winning set from a competition like this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm really happy to have been a part of this contest, and I'm so excited for the winner!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I LOVE this set! Can't wait to get it!!!

Gravatar

Awesome!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looking forward to not being able to get this one, just like the "classic car".

Gravatar
By in United States,

Curious what they are going to do for the box lids given that they don’t make that hinge anymore (or do they?).

Looks delightful though!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it would be neat if for the kid's torso LEGO printed a design that looks like they taped a version of the classic space logo to their shirt

Gravatar
By in United States,

A rare occasion when my pick wins :) Excited to see the final product, including number of stickers vs. prints and a few parts that will require re-colors (Benny's helmet and CMF Robot head).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Such a great looking set. Swap the cat out for a goat and people will go extra nuts, but in a good way!

TBF stickers could be true to the theme in this case.

I wonder whether yours would have won if older AFOLs like me hadn’t been prevented from voting by LEGO. While the winning design is cute, I would have voted for yours if I could have.

Don't know if I'm missing something, but in what way were older AFOLs 'prevented' from voting by LEGO???

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not really my thing, and didn't get my vote. I appreciate the novel concept, but doesn't feel set-worthy to me. Also, seems thematically very similar to 40335 Space Rocket Ride.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There seems to be an opened box and I wonder if the hinged parts are all currently available bricks.
What is the 2x4 hinged element plate, please?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not so sure about this one, especially if many of these parts are represented by stickers... I reckon there were far more appealing options that could have made fantastic GWP sets... Still, from the comments it seems like a lot of people appreciate this way more than I do!

I respect that but give other things a breath.

Gravatar
By in United States,

All of these are great! I love 1 and 4 most.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Congratulations to the creator of this set, and kudos to everyone who wanted this one to win.

But.

The first "Moment in Space" was not a moment in space at all, but a moment on a ride at the mall.

Now the second "Out of This World Space Build" is similarly not really "Out of This World" at all.

Oh well. I guess my disappointment just shows my lack of imagination.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I need that cardboard robot, no question about it. Hope it's part of the final release. I've never been particularly compelled by a GWP before, but this may be it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope the real thing is as detailed as the concept, it looks great

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's the one I voted for!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

It'll go faster with an Awesome Express sticker on it!

(extra points if you recognize the reference)

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's my son wanted..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh man I want bags and bags of those glow stars.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, it's Classic, and it's Space, soooo... all the checkboxes are checked!

There were so many other great candidates, though--I wish we had a way to see them, too.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Great set. It shows everything that LEGO stands for. Children build their imagination and dreams with LEGO. I can well imagine that a child somewhere has already built a space rocket like this with LEGO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I mean, I’ll definitely get one of these, but there were at least three other entries I would have picked first.

@Lordmoral:
Wait, are you complaining that a space set won a poll for “which space set would you like,” or are you complaining that it specifically ties into _Classic_ Space, as compared to Something Else Space? Anyways, this is clearly an unlicensed Toy Story set.

@CCC:
Two bathrooms? Best to just stop thinking about it, there, before you ask the next question...

@Daveismyhero:
Space Goat: Coast to Coast!

@biffuz:
Only the most scientifically accurate sci-fi series of all time, which had three PhDs on the creative staff, and an original mathematical proof solved to show that one episode was possible. But you’d have to paint it red, if you’re going to put that sticker on it. Spray-painted cardboard smells nasty.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There were a lot of great choices for this poll. I did actually vote for this winner. It was a tough choice because I did find it very similar to the previous Space Rocket Ride but in the end I thought it was definitely the most imaginative entry. There were several others I would have been happy with but I'm really glad this one won.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I just want this set for the minifigures tbh...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Very samey to the last one. While nicely build, I find it boring.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This wasn’t the one I voted for, but I dig it a lot. I’ll be picking it up for sure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for Classic Space, but I like this one too.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

My favourite of the bunch! :)

Gravatar
By in South Africa,

Now if they only do the rest of the Classic Space uniform in cardboard (hint, hint)

If, like me, you were among the first wave of VIPs, your LEGO ID prevents you from signing up to Ideas. You cannot vote for Ideas projects or other Ideas-linked competitions. You also cannot take part in them as a contestant. As the earliest VIPs are likely older, there is almost certainly an age-related bias.

I don't know and have no way of knowing whether it would have changed the outcome of this or any other vote. But it's worrying that it exists at all. LEGO is aware of the issue. It just chooses not to do anything about it. Apparently, the '18+' demographic is important to LEGO so long as as you're not too '18+'!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I voted for Ursa Major, but this was my second choice. If it stays close to the original design, I will certainly try to get it.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

not a fan to be honest. it reminds me a previous gwp (40335) from 2019.

Yeah, its like Classic Space is popular, or something, right?!

As for others complaining they cannot vote based on old VIP accounts. I have a fairly old VIP account and can access Ideas and vote on sets. If anyone is having such problems I recommending calling LEGO CS and not just assume there is discrimination occurring.

I had a similar problem when creating my account last year. Had an Ideas account, but could not sign-up for VIP on the same one. LEGO customer service couldn't figure out what caused the problem. I ended up just using a diferent e-mail address to create a second account. Now I have one for voting and one for buying, problem solved.

Gravatar
By in United States,

For sure! It’s a great GWP which I hope doesn’t stray too far. I understand not getting the robot head, but I need the cat! More cats! It’s a very fitting little set for a children’s(and beyond) toy that has a focus on imagination. Let’s just hope the threshold isn’t crazy.

Gravatar

It is charming and I will place an order when it becomes available as a GWP.

Gravatar

It looks cute and charming vibrant, absolutely, but I don't know, I could have done without another freckly kid evoking classic space.

Oh well. I won't be disappointed to own it, if that happens

Very strange- I had no idea this was a thing... What evidence is there that LEGO knows about the issue? And how many people does this affect? And lastly, how old exactly are these VIP accounts...?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Zander:
You know, @BrickRandom has a point. It’s not ageism if they aren’t specifically prohibiting you from making a new account, or if people who are older than you can sign up right now and have no problems.

Sometime after you registered your account, they made a change that’s not fully compatible with your account. It didn’t break it outright, but it didn’t exactly work with it either. I’ve got a six-digit VIP number with an account that I got started during Brickworld Chicago in June of 2009, and I didn’t have any problem. Either this didn’t consistently break older accounts, or only the first handful to register had this same problem. Either way, it’s likely affecting a very tiny subset of VIP members. Of those, it would only impact any who actually try to use the Ideas site, so an even tinier subset. Some, like @BrickRandom, have figured out a workaround, thus removing themselves from that group and making it even smaller.

To do anything about this, you’d need to find someone with the skill to really dig into things the authority/autonomy to decide to invest the time necessary, and in the end it would need to involve a fix that doesn’t violate company policy. This isn’t the first, or even second time I’ve seen you mention this problem. You have before you a workable cheat, which does not appear to be a ToS violation (or at least hasn’t been treated as one), but by now you’ve invested more time and effort into explaining the issue to people who are wholly incapable of fixing it than it would have taken to use that cheat to just sidestep this problem. Maybe it’s time to consider doing so?

@Snaz:
Try more like a year. On 12/31/2020, every single Ideas set that was on tap had been approved in 2020, and every single Ideas set that had been approved in 2020 was still in development except what was due to be released on 1/1/2021. I fully expect that when we reach the end of 2021, every 2020 approval will be released, and the first 2021 approval will be announced with a 2022 release date.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is such a nice model. It reminds me of those Calvin and Hobbes strips where he turns a box into a spaceship, a transmogrifier etc. And I have dim memories of making a big box into a boat when I was little...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Here’s hoping that we haven’t heard the last of the other entries.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks good enough, but I’m very disappointed none of the Classic Space ones did not win.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a nice idea (pun intended, I suppose), but the set itself? No thank you. It's just kind of looks like a bunch of garbage thrown together.

As for Classic Space, LEGO is really missing out by not relaunching (again, I guess pun accidentally intended) a Classic Space line of sets. I mean, they'd get multiple generations buying that stuff. Seems like an absolute no-brainer!

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Bah. Not worth it.
It's a way too similar concept to the previous Space GWP of the kid in the mechanic toy rocket.

The Classic Space Logo would have interested me. This one? Not a single bit. I surely won't make the simplest effort to get it. And if I happen to get it because I ordered something else, it'll go on the pile of sets to resell for sure.

Gravatar

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

This is a good GWP, but honestly I hoped for one of the other models. Maybe LEGO will do a vote like this again

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Excellent choice, got my vote. Has a real nostalgic feeling of simpler times!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The cardboard robot is adorable, fingers crossed the final version looks as good if not cuter

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Congrats to the winner, even though I do admit this entry wasn't my favorite (and still isn't) by a mile. Don't understand why this was so popular. Looks more befitting a Simpsons set than what I would call Space related. Seriously, what's with that cardboard box, what has that got to do with space? I just don't get it.
At least this time I don't feel the need to buy an overpriced set at S @H just to get a GWP.

TLG probably didn't want people to think the reason for not picking it was the new rule (where you can't have digital text on the thumbnail, because it's not a lego part). Maybe they felt bad for introducing that new rule. But that's just my theory. As you can see in the picture, the creator put a digital cardboard piece with the model, so it's wrong.

But now I can't remember if I voted for this or the TV. I'm 95% sure that it was the TV, but I could be wrong, so I'm sorry for my possible choice, you gotta admit that it's cute though, right?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wahooo!!! I guessed right :-D

Gravatar
By in United States,

@CaptainVictoria:
That rule only applied going forward. Any Ideas projects that had already been submitted by the stated date were grandfathered in. Since this contest was posted with submissions that had started before the announcement, it's likely that some of these got in under the wire.

I thought of that when I first realised I couldn't join Ideas. Problem is the consequence if (when) you get caught by LEGO for creating multiple identities through which to vote. It isn't your intention to double vote for Ideas projects? Best of luck trying to convince LEGO's enforcers of Ideas' rules of that. There is a known issue of non-integration of LEGO IDs and Ideas accounts? We, the Ideas ToS enforcers, are unaware of any such issue and are not incentivised to find out if that is really the case. As far as we are concerned, you are not telling the truth. We are the right hand of LEGO. We are unfamiliar with the left hand of LEGO. You cannot talk to us directly. LEGO's CS cannot talk to us directly. Your communication with us is mediated through multiple sections. Your chances of getting this resolved is small to non-existent. We are banning you indefinitely from Ideas and suspending your LEGO ID until further notice.

@Johnny__Thunder97 said:

It's been discussed online before in other AFOL fora and I have received PMs about it from other AFOLs. I have been told by others that they have tried over a long time (years?) to get this fixed by LEGO only to be told by CS that the IT team is aware of the issue. Nothing ever seems to be done about it though.

I don't know how many people are affected: 60, 600, 6000, 60000? No idea.

I first joined LEGO's loyalty scheme when you got a yellow cardboard stampbook and a stamp in store each time you spent a certain amount. You initially didn't have to provide contact details. That came later. VIP cards and accounts came after that. So a long time. I don't recall which year each stage occurred.

Sure, it's not active ageism. But given that someone, somewhere within LEGO knows this is an issue, it is passively ageist.

I know that some LEGO employees are Brickset discussion readers. It may also be that LEGO formally monitors AFOL sentiment through new media. I am hoping that by shining a light in public on this issue that LEGO will do something about it. Thus far, going quietly through CS has achieved nothing.

@Zander:
Hadn't considered any issues with owning multiple accounts. The question is if you'd actually get flagged for it if you were only using one account for Ideas, and a different account for VIP. However, you're the one who bears the penalties if they do catch you and decide you did something wrong, so I understand the reluctance.

Is it possible to close out the current account and open a new one? If it's already shut down, that should take care of any issues with dual accounts. I'm pretty sure they've had to do this in the past. There was a time when, if your card got worn out, they were unable to issue you a new one with the same number, so the only solution was to close the previous account and transfer the points to a new one.

As for the timing, I can provide a window. I attended House of Bricks 2 in 2006. At the time, they were doing punch cards. I remember this because I made my first purchase at a LEGO Store that weekend, and handed off the card because that was the closest LEGO Store, and I didn't expect to have an opportunity to finish it. I don't remember anything about having to register for an account then. The next time I was back was 2009, when I got one of the laminated VIP cards with the metallic red print. This time I did have to register, but my account still works fine.

Great GWP - I actually voted for this one! Very creative.

Also-- do we know what the GWP will be for April? I plan to pick up the Discovery Shuttle and I'm hoping for a cool GWP. . .
