That clear section in the mouth looks weird to me

Gravatar
By in United States,

Y'all know how quick I am to come to Lego's defense when it comes to pricing, but $60 for 410 is pretty gross. At least the Iron Man had 480 with a fair amount of Gold Ink

Gravatar
By in United States,

Meh, the clear section looks too weird, thanks, but I'll pass

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yes, what is it with that mouth? Doesn't look right at all.

I feel like it's meant to be a glass stand or dummy head, but the effect isn't pulled off in the photos for sure. A white center would've probably been a better way to go, if they're hesitant to do a human mouth

Gravatar
By in United States,

So if they do a Rebel Pilot helmet, it'll look like this with the transparent stuff? Yecch.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would not have thought Lego sets that are nothing but display-piece heads would sell but Lego keeps coming out with them. So someone must be buying them.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Well, this looks great and I am no Batman fan but still, that clear mouth part should have been better without pieces.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a “close, but not quite” for me. The bulk of it looks good but there’s some issues. I Feel like they should’ve dropped the chin strap entirely. It looks a little odd, and some iterations of the costume don’t have it anyways so. And yeah, the clear head doesn’t quite work either.

Gravatar
By in Greece,

I’ve really liked the helmets collection, I even like IM and am looking forward to Vader. But just not sure about this at all. I think they should have doubled down on the part count and gone for a full batman head including proper mouth and eyes, maybe even a similar scale to 10018

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

And they said BrickHeadz were weird and ugly... These are BrickHeadz 2.0.

Gravatar
By in United States,

idk this just doesn't do much for me

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Ah... nope.

40386 is so much better, and a fraction of the price.

I think that's the point,

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

This should’ve been amazing. What is going on with the mouth. Very disappointing. Got excited at first look.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the helmets range - got them all except one, but this I don't think I'll be buying. Definitely not a fan. I do wonder if the issue might be that Batman's cowl has come in many forms over the years, and I'm not sure which this is meant to be, if any. Is it Keaton? (it has the Batman 1989 logo on the box). Also I think without the mouth it just looks weird, which I know is a silly thing to say and I wouldn't expect LEGO to attempt to build a mouth in to it, but I still don't like it.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Well one can understand the intention there, but even so it just looks weird. To me the mouth section of the mask gives an impression as if Batman is yawning or screaming in terror. EDIT: or a mouth visor...

Gravatar
By in France,

I don't think that they've got any of these busts right yet

Gravatar
By in United States,

So he is eating a windshield?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very underwhelming after seeing the previous helmet releases.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's because he has a glass jaw, badum tish.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There's no reason why this set should be $60. That's absolutely ridiculous. The build is okay but I don't think cowls work well in this style, especially not with a background that dark behind the mouth. It just looks like Batman screaming.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is great!

And BrickHeadz are weird and creepy, not to mention knockoffs of POP! figurines.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huge Batman fan so yes I will be getting this

But not at that price.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can't you just remove the transparent pieces from the mouth and leave it open?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not usually one to immediately start hating on things, but this really does look awful in my opinion

Gravatar
By in United States,

As others have said, the mouth part is not very attractive. Being a cowl, with exposed skin, I get it. But I think that just means it’s not as suitable for one of these busts. Or maybe change it to all white at least.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Hopefully the Suez Canal is unblocked soon and we can actually receive it on the 26th of April!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, that's awful. Not much to add that hasn't already been said. Some really bizarre choices here. I'd much rather see a 3-d bricksketch of sorts. Whatever the case, this ain't it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If I didn't know what side Batman was on already I would presume from this that he is on the side of evil.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@jdm said:

It seems tricky to execute for sure

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That's a wrong un, that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Almost feels like this one needed part of the cape/symbol with the cowl.

But dig some of the smoothness...;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks very bad and the price is very high, whether in a vacuum or compared to literally any of the other helmet-style sets. Easy pass from me. I understand that it's much harder to sculpt a human face than a helmet from LEGO but surely there was a better way to deal with the empty space than a strangely positioned canopy glass with visible studs!

Gravatar
By in United States,

For everyone questioning the cockpit in the mouth, I can tell you what is likely going on. Batman generally gets depicted in one of two ways. In live-action, you can see his eyes because it’s the only way the actor can see without using CGI like they did in Deadpool. They fill in around the actual eyeballs with black makeup, so it looks like the coal goes right up to the edge of the eyelashes (and closes when you blink), but you still see part of the person’s head. For print, animation, or toys, the eyes are usually blank white because it looks weird when they fill in the eyeballs.

This is clearly meant to represent the latter, with white parts inside the eyeholes to mimic the original comic look. The stand except for the base is also white (no, seriously, you can just make it out), but all the parts you can see are hidden behind trans-smoke plastic. Most likely this was done to make the eyes stand out better. The base of the stand is black, so you can’t use black for the rest or it’ll all blend in with the black cowl. If you use white for the upper portion of the stand, it looks like they eyes are just holes. If you make the upper part of the stand any other color, it just looks bad. So smoke over white looks sorta black, but not black enough to blend in with the cowl, not white enough to blend in with the eyes, and not like you couldn’t pick a color and stick with it (especially when it’s the _only_ one of these with a non-black stand).

Or, and I’m only saying this because clearly I plan to do so, they intend for us to mod this into a giant flying Batcowlship.

@Snaz:
I’m not going to say no, but I will say it doesn’t have to. The Rebel Alliance doesn’t build only in black, and sometimes very, very dark grey. They could make a solid black stand and the helmet will look fine. They could make it just about any shade but white and most of the helmets we’ve seen in the movies would look fine. If they can pick a non-white helmet, and actually figure out how to mimic the color scheme (personally, I’m expecting Luke’s from Ep4, since it only needs a little bit of colored trim and two Rebel emblems in solid red), they could go with a white stand because it’ll stand out from the helmet.

@kolaxanthe:
It does not have the ‘89 Batman logo. If it was the movie logo, it would be black on gold, not yellow. If it was the ‘89 Batsuit logo, it would have a weird triple tail that they dropped for Batman Returns. Speaking of which, that had both a movie logo and a Batsuit logo that looked like this, but the origin of the oval shield logo is the Silver Age Batman era, which had pretty much wrapped up before Burton got involved.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's transparent for all to see that Batman is clearly just masking up to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The pricing alone is enough to turn me off, and that windshield mouth piece makes it so much worse. Maybe a very large sticker printed with a screaming mouth going across the length of it would get the set to sell?

Gravatar
By in Argentina,

I guess these things are popular? I consider myself a superhero fan but this sparks zero desire in me personally (I'm much more likely to part with my gold pieces for minifigs). Different strokes for different folks!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll buy venom next instead..

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The last time I saw a mouth in the Batman lore that was this creepy was Heath Ledger’s Joker.

But I think this takes the cake.

Gravatar

Looks like a black Green Goblin mask instead.

Gravatar

Six days too early. This cannot be real!

What the....is that!?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is good but it could be better! Lol..
Must be the George Clooney Cowl!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the shape of the cowl itself but personally I think they should have gone with an animated series Batman head and fleshed out the mouth of the cowl in a similar style to the Brick Sketches Batman.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pretty sure the clear piece in the mouth of the cowl is for stability when handling the helmet/cowl.
If you grab it wrong or quickly it'll probably snap some pieces in that area.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@MugenLazlo:
I hear next up is a pair of glasses on a mannequin head.

Gravatar
By in United States,

60 dollars for 410 pieces and that weird transparent section? I'm a pretty big Bat Fan, but no thanks. Might pick up the plaque on Bricklink and makes something better for cheaper...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Batman is my favourite comic character, so this interests me, simply because it is Batman. However, the image doesn't really make it a must buy. I will reserve judgement for better images I think. The Darth Vader sets I have seen, look better than the box art, so hoping here for the same.

Could be to inflate the piece count and justify the high price. A white center would have at least matched the eyes. Otherwise, shouldn't they also be clear?

Oh dear, what a disaster. ...really, you’d want to display that? Maybe in a dentist’s reception to make you wonder a bit.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Truly awful without the exposed part of the face

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Pleased that it’s an easy pass for me.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I think this is based on the cowl for the new Batman movie. Not to happy with the transparent part, but I think it’s not dificult to change that.
Now I want a catwoman cowl to go with it.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

looks like he lost his dentures somewhere

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Would've looked a lot better without the chinstrap. That said, hard pass from me. I can't unsee batman violently screaming.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As peculiar as the transparent parts are, I could see them coming in handy for creating support struts for spaceships if you swapped 'em out with your own moc of Batman's face

Gravatar
By in United States,

Dark blue on a black stand (and no trans) would’ve solved a lot of problems here.

Gravatar

Let's see. Looks weird, insanely overpriced.
All the ingredients for a perfect shelf warmer.

@MugenLazlo:
You...seriously? Most famous glasses in all of comic books? Dude with the spitcurl?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The comic pics on the back of the box have short Frank Miller style ears. Couldn't they have found something that actually mimics the model?
Or just have based it on Bale or Keaton so it fits with the 2008 Iron Man helmet? This tries to please everyone but just pleases no one.

The back of the box shows comic art, so the white eyes are definitely the right choice in that regard

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Cooliocdawg:
West was a jerk who hated his fanbase. His show nearly killed the Batman franchise when they tailored the comics to be more in the style of his show, and he personally nearly did it again with this:

https://www.slashfilm.com/1989-batman-documentary/

@AustinPowers:
In the upper 2/3rds of the mouth area, you can see some vertical lines. These exactly match the width of 1x bricks seen in other parts of the image, and you can tell that they're a lighter color of plastic. If the lighter patch was only visible in the product shot, I could say maybe it was just a reflection, but you can still see that same light patch in the third image where it's a home setting with no white decor visible. If those parts aren't white, they're certainly no darker than light-bley.

Gravatar

By in Israel,

60 USD for mostly just regular, unprinted and unspecialized bricks is just insulting. We've seen how great value for money LEGO can be with sets like Ninjago and Pirates of Barracuda Bay (among many other examples).
But hey, the box says 18+, so I guess this means it *has* to be overpriced? sigh...

I don't think it's exactly the '89 logo, but it's definitely not the '66. That one is much more squat

Gravatar
By in United States,

@BelgianBricker:
When you say “1966”, people are immediately going to assume you mean the TV show.

@fakespacesquid:

https://medium.com/the-designest/the-emergence-of-the-batman-logo-through-time-and-space-92a9071bbbab

https://screenrant.com/batman-infographic-every-batsuit/

Those are some great resources for the evolution of the Batman logo and Batsuit, respectively. When Batman first appeared, through the end of the Golden Age, he basically looked like someone had stapled a bat to his chest (and, due to the inconsistency of Golden Age art, it changed enough that you’d think it was still alive). In 1964, eight years after the Barry Allen Flash ushered in the Silver Age, they gave Batman a yellow oval around this bat-shape. Two years later, the show appears to have borrowed that design. And, like spotting Spaceballs in your neighborhood, the comics changed the logo right afterwards. 1966 is when the Silver Age shield logo with the stylized oval-shaped bat first appeared. It would be used for the various iterations of Superfriends, and would remain in constant use until Frank Miller actually justified the design (can’t armor-plate your face!) in the first issue of The Dark Knight Returns...and then immediately tossed it to the side in favor of a logo that looked like then Golden Age version in steroids.

It didn’t go away completely, though. The two Burton films, and the Batman Returns Batsuit both used it (‘89 Batsuit had a triple tail design that you can see at the first link). It returned to Comics for the Troika storyline after Bruce healed up from the broken back that Bane gave him in Knightfall (there was magic involved). And it was used for the original Batman: The Animated Series costume.
