Not just one, but three making the top 10!
I've never paid any attention to these "hot this week" posts before. Is it normal for 3 of the top 10 posts to be sets from the 50's?

No it's not, it is usually newer sets
How did those 3 sets make the top 10?
This reddit post references the Esso oil can and says it is one of the rarest pieces, predating modern bricks. 24,000 up votes and 421 comments might do that. https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/mocpi5/got_my_lego_white_whale_the_esso_oil_can_which/

The three sets in question are linked directly within the first 10 comments, mystery solved
Number of access requests = views <- I bet the requests don't have to come from different addresses and lag does the rest. I did manage to catapult some obscure old set onto the list when I had an evening of bad internet once.
Three so called "Reddit hug of death". Luckily, Brickset can handle it.
