LEGO teases an upcoming Star Wars set!
Posted by CapnRex101,LEGO has posted a teaser for an imminent Star Wars announcement on Twitter.
This item, which is presumed to be a large-scale R2-D2 following another accidental teaser last month, seemingly contains an R2-D2 minifigure and a printed brick which celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Lucasfilm.
The official announcement should follow soon.

Having the previous large-scale R2-D2, I'm not sure if I'll be picking up the newest one. I kind of like the blocky aesthetic of the old head, compared to the arches of the accidental teaser.
Also, I'm still bummed after all these years that minifig-scale R2 still can't freely rotate his head.
Ooo yay, finally a new R2-D2 with printing on the back (and a rotating head, and a 3rd leg!)...
Oh... Never mind, at least I get that 'Lucasfilm - 50' brick I always wanted
One could argue that the spirit of Lucasfilm only made it to age 41....
Funny how someone posted a spoiler promotional picture of the new 50th set as a reply to Lego Group's tweet. (No it wasn't me - I stopped using Twitter last year because of the everpresent garbage there.)

Agree completely. The old UCS R2 model is almost perfect in my opinion. I likethe blockiness. It’s Lego
Yay - Another GWP scramble / debacle / nightmare approaches.
Hope that printed 1x4x4 will not be exclusive to 75308. That alone will not make me buy the updated R2-D2 UCS.
There was nothing accidental about that teaser. I think it's definitely intentional when you set up a fake backdrop to take pictures and leave an unannounced set within view.
never got the original, so I for one, welcome our new overlor....I mean, yay new Lego

LEGO withdrew the image from LEGO.com as soon as they were notified, hence I doubt the teaser was intentional. 'Accidental' announcements can be an effective marketing strategy, although I think LEGO simply makes mistakes sometimes.
I hope it’s an Ewok!
please, for God's sake, print the back of the R2-D2 minifigure

I too agree about the older R2 model. I liked the blockiness of it, and thinks it’s a great representation of R2 with Lego. I think something is lost with the new curves they try and use.
I'm sure the new Artoo will look great. But since I was able to bricklink the previous version, I don't think I want to drop more money on another one.
Wasn't the original also a May the 4th release? So just more rehashing for LEGO Star Wars?
Maybe they will do a Threepio head for the helmet series. That might be neat (although maybe disturbing also).

"Different strokes for different folks"... now there will be an option for each crowd... I also think 10225 is still the best :)

Wicket, perhaps that will be the next buildable character

As cool as the gold parts could be, I think it would be cooler to go with the Phantom Menace addition of C-3PO...
I like the LucasFilm brick. It's cool.

How much did it cost to Bricklink this set? I can't recall if there are any rare/exclusive parts.
Well, my 10225 remains beloved and irreplaceable, but I still hope that, for all the people who do not have the privilege of owning that fantastic model, that this iteration shall be a well-designed and affordable model not marred by a Ulysses Incident.
To those disappointed that TLG is putting out another UCS-style R2, remember how long it's been since the last one was available at retail. Releasing an update of a fan-favorite character makes good sense to pull in everyone who wasn't able or wasn't even buying Lego when the last one was available.
Am I going to die before I get to see an official UCS AT-AT? C'mon LEGO.
I wasn't able to buy 10225 when it was in stores, so I'm super stoked to see this one. I'm not as big of a fan of the arches vs the studs from what I'm able to see on that teaser video, but I'm excited to see the entire model, since there's no way I'm paying the after-market prices for the old one.
As for the Ulysses incident...yeah. We'll see what Lego can do. I wasn't able to get my hands on Yoda's lightsaber when the Cantina came out, so I guess time will tell.

Yeah, it's kinda cool to be honest... But why would the LEGO group waste money on printing this instead of giving us printing on the back of R2-D2, or prints of the UCS-style plaque that will inevitably come with the set and be a sticker...
While I do like the Lego droids, it seems like I have dozens of R2 minifigures, sets, mini-builds, etc., so won't ever be purchasing this set. Time to do something different, TLG!
I'd pay a bit more for a decent sized C3P0 set and it'd actually be original too. Just a thought.

Uhh I don’t want to get in trouble (or get anyone else in trouble), but I have a hunch you won’t have to wait for long..
I'm perfectly happy with my original R2, but glad theres a new version coming out for those who didn't get the old one. Also, Shiny! :)
Seeing a lot of complaining about this in the comments. I missed out on the original, I suspect I’m not alone in this, so this is a welcome release.
Golem25, I would argue that the spirit of Lucasfilm only made it to age 18 (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade).
I for one am happy about this release. I was not around when the older version was realeased (well, I was, but I was not into LEGO). I've bought some older UCS sets in the last couple of years (got 10240 just today!) and bricklinked others (like 10227 and 75059), but paying retail for a USC is always welcomed.
Nevertheless, I was not sure I wanted to get it. But my wife, who is not into LEGO at all (but is very supportive nonetheless) told me I'd be a fool not to get it... So I probably will.

I would have preferred if they somehow used round corner pieces as well. The sliced look isn't doing it for me.

Don't want to burst any bubbles here, but the rumors of a UCS AT-AT are... not something you should buy into.

Well, that is a tricky situation. Bricklink from scratch, it will cost a pretty penny. The only rare part is the reddish brown hoses, and at the time when I built it they were $25/each and you need 4!
I don't own this set, since I skipped that part. I am using a silver metallic hose instead. I had the 95% of the pieces in my inventory, so it cost me about $10 to bricklink the set.
I did notice the final product is really clunky, so hopefully the new one is designed better on the inside and actually is smooth with the third leg.

The brown hoses at the feet are exclusive to the UCS R2D2. I think everything else is common pieces.
@Golem25 :
I would love a version of this tile that says “41 Years”, and another one that looks exactly like this but zombified.
Also, that teaser photo is flipping the bird at all of us.
Might get it, but I would be in no rush.

Well... if the leaks came after the official teaser... they wouldn't be leaks, would they?

Absoultely agree. You'd have to be fairly obtuse to place something like the top of an upcoming set in a promotional video for a different set and not notice it. LEGO isn't dumb. I find it hard to believe that little tease was an accident.

This is just the definition of a leak

Yeah, I think the point was that, "once again, there are leaked images".

Promobricks confirmed the rumor as true awhile back. Do you have new/different info?

If a UCS drop ship is coming this year, isn’t that likely to be all the UCS we get? I’d absolutely love an ATAT. Far more than a drop ship. But I struggle to see how Lego could release three UCS sets in one year. They’d be competing with each other

I was hoping it was going to be a surprise may the 4th release

The head looks wrong with the curved elements. I’ll happily stick with my blocky 10225 R2

I think since R2-D2 isn't technically labeled as UCS, it wouldn't be a stretch if we got a UCS Gunship and AT-AT.
Once upon a time I would have been excited for this, however Disney has managed to turn my love of Star Wars into apathy.
@mirkwoodspiders:
Remember that UCS gets messy at times. The previous large R2 did not have any UCS bug on the box, but neither did 10227 B-Wing released the same year. 10225 is billed as being a UCS set on its Retired Product page on LEGO.com, though, so while AFOLs will argue that point until the sun blinks out, The LEGO Company clearly considered it to be part of the UCS lineup when they released it. While they don't appear to be using the UCS branding for large character builds at the moment, they are still including UCS-style plaques (which the MBS sub-theme does not), so it certainly muddies the waters.
Regardless, there was one year that did get three UCS releases. In 2002, 7194, 10026, and 10030 all released with the words "Ultimate Collector Series" in the bottom left corner of the box. With the highly saturated high-end lineup across all themes, I would expect they wouldn't do three UCS sets in one year, but the truth is they haven't even done two in the same year since 2017. Since then, they split the year between one UCS and one MBS set. So, how sure are we that both the confirmed Gunship and the rumored AT-AT will be released in 2021?
As happy as I am for those who missed out on the first UCS R2 and who prefer the new look with those curved pieces, I definitely am not going to get the new one.
I much prefer the studded look of the first edition, but I never got that either when it was still available. I could of course bricklink it, but then again I have so many other renditions of R2 (LEGO as well as other toys) that I simply don't feel the need to add another one to my collection.
