Personally, not liking the 8 wide cars. Yes, I know more details can be added, but I like the fact that the 6 wide vehicles size nicely with City vehicles.
Plus this means a lot more parts, thus more expensive.
I guess that means I'll have more money for all the cool Creator sets.

Maybe LEGO are trying to kill off Speed Champions intentionally but in any case, time to play and display.

By in United Kingdom,

I love all of these, but especially the Ford GT and Corvette. The building techniques in the Speed Champions line are really some of the best Lego is doing right now. I'm glad they changed to 8 wide. Looking back on the 6-wide cars, they don't look very accurate and the proportions are weird. It's a shame for younger people who can't afford the more expensive sets, but hopefully the single car sets are cheap enough.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Agreed - the 8-wide vehicles are a massive improvement on 6-wide and work well in a layout of modular buildings in addition to being good for display in their own right.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Elva is disappointing. I'm not sure a screen less vehicle is translating well.

By in Norway,

What I do not get about the twin packs are the - to me at least - totally illogical combination of vehicles in the sets. I would love '68 Corvette from 76903, the 1970 Dodge Challenger from 76904 and/or the Ford GT from 76905 but none of the cars they are packed with appeal to me very much. Same with the currently available twin packs.

Would love if TLG could make less twin packs of this type which as far as I see it either forces you to purchase the cars you want at double the price or make you miss out on those you want. Why not release 'themed' twin packs with two racing cars, two dragsters, two classic cars etc. instead of these seemingly garbled compositions? I just don't get it.

Gravatar

I really like the Chevrolet and Ford sets. I rarely like both of the cars in the Speed Champion two-packs, but somehow they managed to do it twice in one wave!

Because that would mean mixing brands in a single pack, and I don't think the IP owners will allow that.

Thank you for the explanation, that makes perfect sense with regard to the twin packs. However, if this is indeed the case, why not reduce the "domination" of the twin packs (3 to 2 in this wave)?

My specific car interests apart, more single packs would also make the Speed Champions line more affordable to younger fans of Lego. I cannot for the life of me understand a lot of the decisions TLG currently seem to be taking with their products and relation to fans.

True. Supra looks disappointing, at least from this angle...

Don't really see much difference in details or realism on 8-wide versus 6-wide.
Plus, to me that Koenigsegg looks almost identical to the Ferrari F8, at least the front half.

What there’s not to get? You are aware that TLG is a business and their goal is to $ell. You answered your own question as to why these sets are bundled with one vehicle manufacturer only. If you’re smart enough to wait, wait until 20% off deals around the holidays

Gravatar
By in Lithuania,

Even though these are new items and each having an entry in catalog and pictures (!) I don't see them being listed under "Site updates" for SETS. It used to work like that for years until about half a year ago (or little over that), but not sure what has changed. Am I missing some setting or website just got changed?

As a matter of fact, it was @DoonsterBuildsLego who answered my question regarding why these particular vehicles were bundled together, not me. I was - parhaps - 'not smart enough' to get that either... And 20 % off is still much different from single packs (who also go on sale from time to time).

I do, however, understand that TLG is a business, but does that mean that we as customers of said company and fans of their product cannot discuss such matters on a site dedicated to all tings Lego?

And finally, the list of things I do not get grows longer by the minute as I do not get the vitriol in your reply to my post either.

But the Lamborghini twin pack is so good. The Huracan is the best design of the 2020 wave and the Urus is excellent as well. I’ll admit the dragster is misplaced in Speed Champions but it’s still a good design as are both Corvettes.

I've been waiting for these!
The Koenigsegg will probably be a day one buy for me.
I like the C8 and GT Heritage, will probably pick those up on sale, and maybe do custom stuff with the other parts.
Not super convinced by the Supra, which is a shame.
I'd love to see Lego do more Japanese cars, the GT-R last year was fantastic. Hoping the Supra looks better at other angles, and that we maybe get a Skyline, Lancer or Impreza at some point.

Good point regarding the Lamborghini twin pack, I have at least considered buying that. My original point was that the combinations of vehicles in the twin packs are - for my taste - too diverging, and I still stand by that point even if I now see TLG's business reasoning behind it.

From that perspective I would argue that the Ford Bronco and GT do not go well together either, but the combination is not as curious as the one including the dragster. I get that both are Corvettes in 76903, but would prefer two classic road versions than one racing and one classic. I do agree with your point regarding the last one though, it is at least a passable combination.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Liking the look of these, but the overhead pics tend not to do them justice - would love to see the boxart to get some nice straight-on front views!

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Man, that's a disappointing bunch. As someone else said, I'm only really interested in half of the double-pack sets: the classic Corvette, the Ford GT and the Charger. And while better than the first attempt, the Charger isn't that spectacular.
All those modern sports cars look way too similar. Oh, well, cheap year for my Speed Champs collection.
(Still waiting for the Lambo set to come down so I don't pay too much for that horrible Urus...)

@Huw The Ford GT set has the thumbnail of the Toyota.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They had to make these sets the year I'm saving for a PC :(

Also, I'm a bit disappointed that the Supra's headlights are segmented stickers. that was the one I was looking forward to the most, and it looks less than I expected. Then again, official angles are often unflattering to the set in real life

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oof... what’s with all these great new summer sets?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Elva is the biggest surprise to me - what a fantastic build! I love how the front splitter is done. The angled side panels work great. The seats appear to be printed, and I like how the dash is laid out. Brick built lights, front and rear. I don't care about the real car at all, but this model feels incredibly successful.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Oh no, the poor Supra got mangled really bad. It went from small flowy sports car to thicc and blocky piece of cheese :(

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Finally! This is a theme I was waiting for the most. Thought I was hoping that Koenigsegg will be Agera

Gravatar

Might be for the best, GPU prices are way more than MSRP right now anyway. 3080s are going for 2k!

Gravatar

Personally, I can't fathom why anyone wouldn't like the 8 wide cars over the Six Wide cars. The 8 stud wide fits sports cars especially so much better

Gravatar

These are very nice. I am not normally into speed champions, but these are worth while on their own merits as small car models. These are even nicer than the first wave of 8-wide.

Many of the two-packs are classic and modern versions of the same car, or two modern cars from one brand. The only one of these in particular that seems weird to me is the Dodge set.

I agree completely with this.
Same was with previous Dodge double set and few similar. I'll be getting those if they are down to half price, effectively paying for the one I want/need minus usual discount I might get for singles.

Besides that I really like those classics in 8-wide, they have good details, proportions are great (even though they don’t play well with city or previous SC).

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The Ford twin pack and the Mclaren also look really great to me. Those and the Koenigsegg would be my top picks

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The Dodge Challenger and Ford GT looks really great and are immediately recognized, too bad they aren't sold separately. The Koenigsegg design is also good but would look much better with a more rounded windscreen. A problem with the windshield used is that all the new sport cars reminds too much of last years Ferrari and Lambo.

Pretty sure that the site updates sidebar with new sets is auto-filled from the LEGO website pages as they are published officially. Huw and admin team have the option to manually add numbers and images when those become available through other channels for the benefit of the avid fan, but from a database standpoint it's a lot more work.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wonder if Lego even pursued a Gulf license for the Heritage GT?
As others have mentioned. shame it's in a Twin Pack.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That Ford set looks like it's missing a trailer for the Bronco to pull the GT around. Although I do like the Bronco's rollcage.
The Elva amuses me because some of the techniques used remind me of the polybag Elva.
I echo The_Cellarer's concern about the Dodge two-pack. Those two just don't go well together, although it is cool to see a dragster in SC.
I like the fact that each of the two-packs has a female and a male driver.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Stickered Headlights that glow on box art are just misleading.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really like the look of these, especially the Ford GT. The only real dilemma is, whether to get the whole lot on day 1, or have the patience to wait for the inevitable substantial price cuts in a few months!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I’m so glad to see that this theme hasn’t been forgotten. That Corvette twin-pack is MINE!

And an interesting thing about the Ford GT; this is the first time we have had a car redone in 8-wide configuration, as 75881 had the modern race car version of the Ford GT in 6-wide, and the new set captures its look much more gracefully.

It will be worth it to see about recreating that Le Mans winning car in 8-wide by purchasing parts and a sticker sheet to do a recolour and adding the appropriate bodywork.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Looks like the steering wheel of 76902 is lined up with the driver?

Gravatar
By in United States,

About d*mn time!!

The 8-wide builds are even better here, plus the Corvette, Ford, and McLaren sets look amazing. I just hope we can get a classic GT40 without the awful clown shoe-like proportions of the 2017 set someday. Those three will definitely be day one buys for me.

It also looks like we're getting new wheels and tires for the theme. While I'm glad the proportions of those have been made more realistic (as per the article some time back) I do love some sidewall on my tires. The old wheels will certainly be missed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great looking sets, but I'm partial to the Vette.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I wish that Lego would Rebrand the Speed Champions line into a 6 stud wide "CITY" line and an 8 stud wide "MINIFIG SCALE" line. Then continue to produce versions for both.
••• Alternatively, they can borrow from the 3-N-1 Creator theme, and add extra parts so that one can create either version.

Lego should follow the though process and extend this to their Modulars as well. It's the perfect excuse to sell Bigger sets.

6 wide was a big thing for me, but I managed to get used to it. 8 wide is just too much. This is where I say "thanks for the good times". Having said that, I think Stingray could have been done 6 wide and would still look this good. I'll check the instructions and see if it can be recreated in 6 wide.

Gravatar

I'm not a car person at all. But since doing 8 wide and building a couple im hooked. They look so beautiful and fantastic. And the building techniques make the builds really enjoyable.

In my entire life I have not encountered one single instance where a kid would have wanted to build a LEGO set together with one of their parents, let alone grandparents.
In what kind of marketing BS world do these people think they're living? Or do they really believe we fall for that explanation, while the simple truth and fact of the matter is that they simply want to make us spend more money.

Well, I was excited for the Supra the most, and it does not look good. The sticker headlights going across three pieces that don't even line up is crap. I really wish Lego would release some more pieces in trans colors for headlights, it just looks so much better than lame stickers. Sadly I don't really think any of these look as good as the Ferrari F8, Audi Quattro, or Nissan GT-R. Also another year of being disappointed that they don't have a VW in the lineup.

I build sets with my children all of the time. Mostly Disney with my daughter and Jurassic World with my son. And they help me with most of my sets, even modulars and the like. My wife even participates sometimes! LEGO is one of our enjoyable family activities.

Feel free to check out The Forestmen Of Endor on Flickr to see some of our MOCs!

I agree I would love something, anything by VW! (preferably a GTI.) Although I am perfectly fine with the Supra.

I'd love to see how they did a Beetle at SC scale. Or maybe a Squareback. (It's possible that I am a huge fan of vintage Volkswagens.)

I second this. My daughter builds with me all the time, specially creator 3-in-1 sets (great lineup IMO).

Well, I was hoping for more European classics instead of American classics, but the models look fine and will be a good continuation for the 8 stud line.
The only one I don’t like is the dragster, which also happens to be huge. I’ll likely pass on this one or try to buy the other Dodge from someone else.

Both my sons build LEGO with me. One is 16, the other 13 with developmental disabilities (kindergarten age cognitively - to put it in perspective). Several of my friends who are AFOLs build with their kids.

I think it happens more often than you might think.

@The_Cellarer:
The Dodge pairing makes perfect sense. The dragster would only be driven at a drag strip, but dragsters and funny cars aren’t the only things you’ll see racing there. Sometimes street-legal cars will race against each other, which is where the other car comes in. Obviously no sane muscle car owner will challenge a dragster to a race, but a single owner could show up with both cars.

@AustinPowers:
It depends more on the parent/child relationship than the marketing. One member of my LUG used to co-build with one of his sons (who consistently tried to build whatever dad was making, but bigger). Another member partners with his nephew to make layouts. Several of the other parents in the club bring their kids to various shows that we do (we get a few more hands to help the setup go faster, and they get to help put together a layout the size of a bedroom). I’ve met several parent/child partners at Brickworld Chicago, many of which have lasted into the child’s adulthood. I also know people for whom the LEGO experience was more of an escape from their home life than a means of family bonding.

Their marketing team is not only correct, but they’ve actually been picking up on clues given to them by their customers. One of the biggest complaints when they repeated the Winter Village toy shop is that it had already become a common family tradition to build those sets together as part of the holiday season.
