Here's a press release for an unusual model that's released next month:

10282 LEGO Adidas Originals Superstar, 731 pieces, rated 18+
$79.99 / €89.99 / £79.99 / CA$109.99 / AU$159.99
Available from 1st July

Building on their ongoing collaborative partnership, Adidas Originals and the LEGO Group have reunited once again; this time to present a bold new take on the classic Superstar silhouette. Launching alongside the playful Adidas Originals LEGO Superstar trainer is a buildable Superstar LEGO brick model which will add a surprising new addition to your trainer collection.

In this never-seen-before LEGO offering, you’ll be recreating the iconic trainer from LEGO elements to make a collectible display piece that’s sure to spark conversations.

Just like the real thing, this LEGO version includes the iconic Adidas Originals Superstar trainer graphics, shell toe shape, trefoil logo and serrated 3 stripes mark. Right shoe or left shoe? You decide! Or buy two to create a pair! This set includes 17 extra LEGO elements, so you can choose to build either the right-foot or left-foot trainer. For extra realism, it even has shoelaces and comes in an authentic shoe box.

The model measures over 12 cm high, 27 cm long and 9 cm wide and with a display stand and plaque, this model will be appreciated by anyone who loves Adidas and street wear collectibles, as well as LEGO fans.

“As a kid of the 80s and growing up in the 90s, the Superstar trainer with its rich street art culture was such an iconic item, and that’s also when I got my first pair”, said Florian Müller, Senior Designer, LEGO Group. “So when the collaboration with Adidas started I was super excited to work on this model. As shoes represent very organic objects, made from flexible material that also look different on every person, it was a fun challenge to translate this into the LEGO System in Play, which by nature is square and blocky.

"Thanks to the Superstar team at Adidas Originals it’s been a super collaborative process with valuable insights shared about the art of shoe making, and now we just look forward to seeing how fans will take to the model, customising it in their own unique and wonderful ways”.

10282 LEGO Adidas Originals Superstar launches on July 1st and will be available exclusively at www.lego.com/Adidas-superstar, LEGO stores, Adidas.com and Adidas stores globally.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This has to be one of the weirdest sets LEGO has released, but I don't hate it. It's not a ridiculously high price and I kind of love the little quirks like the real shoelaces, UCS-style plaque, and the fact that in comes in a literal shoebox. I don't know that I actually want it since I don't care about shoes, but for $80 it's a decently interesting LEGO model and I might pick one up.

woah... I don't have any words.

Pretty bold of then to make this.

Looks bland. Why not make the Lego Adidas collection out of Real Lego? The color would save this set

I’m not quite sure if this is genius and absolutely amazing, or completely terrible?! If it was earlier in the year I’d be convinced it was an April fools. But part of me loves it… haha

By in United States,

What was Lego thinking with this?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Absolutely ridiculous idea for a set and the price is a complete joke. It sure does have some interesting parts though, very excited for the new 5x5 quarter dome especially.

As an aside, does Adidas use slave labour like Nike does?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I think it is clever and unusual. I have to limit my sets to 5 themes (as I simply don't have the space), so this probably won't make it in. However, in all honesty, I don't think I am the target market for this, but it is quirky enough that I like it.

Gravatar

No, sorry, this is an epic fail from my viewpoint, make more pirate sets or huge castles, not this!

Lots of people here don't seem to realise how big sneaker culture is.

I can see this selling not only to sneakerheads, but kids of the 80's as well (I'll be certainly getting myself one, as its a style I like. ) Just hoping to see a Lego version of the Superstars I can actually wear!

C3PO: "How horrid!"

This applies to both the concept and the "1970's" spelling of "1970s" on the plaque… :s

As such, the design isn't too bad given the subject… The concept of a Lego shoe is original but unnecessary… Although that'll bring in new consumers, I guess…

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ok, I'm going to be the one to say it. I love that Lego are releasing this!

I am not the target demographic, and I have no intention of buying it, but it's really showing off how creative the Lego hobby is, and how adults (and kids) can turn to Lego to build ANYTHING they are interested in.

Sure, the price is a little on the high side, but that's the norm for trainers/sneakers anyway. And it's certainly the norm for Lego. There are some great new parts. And a ton of white if you need those for a moc or whatever.

And it's presented really elegantly, and you can buy two if you want a pair.

I've seen loads of interesting, out there, esoteric builds on a host of fan sites, full of great parts usage, imagination and skill. And I'm always a bit sad they don't get much attention outside hobbyist circles. Well this set will get a lot more attention. And it says "Whatever you are into, Lego can help you express your love, your fandom."

And that can only be great for the hobby.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hot-doggity, there's a lot of opinions flying around, expressed by people who don't get why this was released.

BECAUSE IT WILL SELL.

For example, LEGO have a whole theme that's dedicated to cars and people don't question that theme at all. I think cars are a pointless subject for LEGO, because, to me, all cars in real life or bricks are just metal boxes with windows and a wheel on each corner. But others seem to like them and THEY SELL.

TLG knows exactly what it's doing.

Gravatar

New leak from Lego....buildable sandals with a GWP of a pair of Lego branded white socks (which will fade to brown naturally if left the sun). Will be a 50+ age range set apparently!

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

All comments here are from spoiled kids...

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Things like this, the Typewriter, the Botanical Collection, the helmets/busts, the former Creator Expert, and Star Wars UCS are what I want to see in the 18+ line, not things that really ought to be marketed to all ages like 123 Sesame Street, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Everyone Is Awesome. I get that the 18+ line is for products intended to be display pieces without the building restrictions of child-oriented products, but I think the age rating and the sterile black background really hurts the marketability of the latter products. I'm happy to see a variation and splash of color in the packaging style as well.

I think LEGO has a winning formula when it comes to LEGO models of everyday objects, and I hope that they won't take what other Bricksetters say in general to heart and will instead focus on what each product's target demographic likes or dislikes about these products. The fact that Adidas is also releasing a wearable counterpart to this is great as well. I look forward to seeing even more collaborations between LEGO and other brands. The possibilities are truly endless.

I think the idea is interesting although not something I would buy (and I'm glad there are things LEGO is making that I don't want to buy, I don't have infinite space or money). However I think the model is ugly. The shoebox packaging is the best part of this set.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Yeah, no...
I do give credit to the build design but I really don't see the point... I'm supposed to be in the target age range but it just doesn't do anything for me.

Can't wait for a Levi's jeans set, now :p

This set is marketed as 18 plus…

Gravatar
By in United States,

Personally, if you're going to start a shoe line with Lego, it's got to be Jordans to kick it off.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The set is targeting adult (since 18+) non-FOLs in order to grab new customers. Will some of them buy this? Sure, some sneaker fans certainly will. Will that make AFOLs out of many of them? I sincerely doubt it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

People seem to be missing the point of the cross-promotional marketing campaign here. Adidas is producing Lego-brand apparel that can be brick accessorised so TLG is making buildable apparel.

Expect upcoming sets to include tile art football jerseys.

Gravatar

68% so far, "No, it doesn't interest me"...

Gravatar

No thank you. This set has no sole.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm trying to find a single good thing to say here. I have sneakerhead friends, and I do get what LEGO was trying to accomplish with this set. But everything from the clunky design, the single shoe, the price point....

I showed this to one of those friends in the sneakerhead community and he actually grimaced. I really hope this does appeal to some collectors and helps bring new people to LEGO, but I suspect this isn't going to go over that well with much of anyone.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The teaser makes sense now, the toe of the shoe has the best shaping. The further back you go though, the less natural the shaping looks, it doesn't create the illusion of a softer material.

It's a shame, since otherwise I see the logic behind this collaberation, and they did the smart thing and sold a single shoe that can be built both ways, rather than selling a pair for twice the price.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

this is stupid

Gravatar
By in United States,

More expensive than pretty much any single pair of shoes I own combined, looks clunky, and a lot of pieces for just a shoe.

I think the only market this will appeal to will be the same flippers that resell the sneakers for ridiculous amounts.

Why didn't they just do a shoe store or something that would both appeal to the sneaker crowd, and fit into City builds?

Too bad there isn't a "What the heck were those designers smoking when they came up with this idea?" option.

I think it will sell much like the Supreme items (which I've only noticed as a knife and multitool manufacturer, SOG, has made several Supreme items; which show up regularly in my eBay searches for the former). I saw a Supreme-branded SOG folding shovel recently. The plain black one was $20 new from SOG. The Supreme version only differed in that it was red, and had the Surpeme logo--I regularly saw them listed at close to $100 or more. The people who buy them have no intention of building the set. Like the sneakers and the Supreme items; it will be bought just to flip some time later.

Hear hear! Brickset comments have been becoming increasingly entitled, bitter and angry for years now. It wasn't always like this, time was we came together to celebrate something we loved, not rant about how much we hate. If this is the Lego community now, I'd rather the sneaker people thanks.

I think a UCS Shoe is a ridiculous and brilliant idea!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This certainly triggers my inner sneaker head, I guess the only thing negative would be the price, $109 CAD for 1 shoe.
Personally it should have been a pair.
Yes bricks do add up in the end, but on the Adidas site I can get real Superstars for $100 CAD.
Or
Spend $170 CAD on some ZX-8000 with LEGO branding, which is still better price.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This is an interesting brand collaboration. It seems clear that a large majority of Bricklink Lego collectors are not sneaker collectors. Sneaker collecting is huge though, tons of cash exchanged, closets and walls filled with more pairs of shoes than anyone could ever need, and none of them will ever be worn. This seems like a unique display piece to add to any shoe collector's collection. The shoebox, and laces are a very nice touch. I think the shoe looks pretty ugly, but it's got some charm to it. It's a bit of culture/history and It seems to be targetting a market with very little overlap with Lego collectors.

This isn't the first collaboration with Adidas either!

Every niche Lego hits expands their audience and reputation a little bit. I am a little disgusted with the consumerism/materialism that drives sales for this, but it also doesn't surprise me. Lego is really taking the rebuild the world seriously, and they are hitting every significant cultural icon with a viable adult market (Winnie the Pooh, Sesame Street for adults now that we're kids in the 70's, 80's, 90's). Super Mario, Ghostbusters, Seinfeld, home Alone, typewriters, grand pianos. These are all well aged icons (in certain countries). Often world renowned.

Adults seem to like display pieces. It really seems like Lego will continue riding this as long as people will keep buying. And they always ensure there is something for everyone. Old fans and new.

I will likely never buy this set; I can appreciate it. I have no love for adidas; someone else does.

Seeing this has a kind of culture shock, cultural awareness effect.

I wonder home many people who have never purchased a Lego set will buy this. Same with Everyone Is Awesome.

As much as I like display pieces.. I know I just want to play and rebuild over and over with my kids. So these sets are not for me (they would be spare parts)

So. Two multi-billion dollar corporations combine marketing forces to make a $160 pair of fake shoes...will any of the proceeds be directed towards impoverished areas whose people walk around bare-footed and dirt poor?

Every now and then it winds up being cheaper to import sets from the US than to buy them in Australia, and this might just be one of those cases. $55 is pretty close to what shipping would probably cost in this case

Gravatar
By in United States,

So many other sets to purchase instead...

If it came with a lot of sand blue 1x1 plates, I'd be all over it (of course that would be true for any set released by LEGO).

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's got a stand, it's got an empty interior with room for a plain colored brick, it's got a big windscreen part for a tongue, it's got parts to build it in either left or right versions which means it can be built symmetrically if you want ... It may have seemed highly (not infinitely) improbable for years, but Lego has actually done it. They've actually released the Heart of Gold as a retail set! Major props to them for that.

Oh, and the Adidas packaging is really neat too. Really emphasizes the random nature of the Infinite Improbability Drive by picking up a dual license. It's a pity they left out Ford Prefect and Zaphod Beeblebrox, but we all know how rare it is to get all the important minifigures in one set.

Given the stuff I tried to lift with LEGO wreckers and cranes I'd built over the years, that if it's System, and not Technic, usually the weight is around clutch power, which is better than everyone else but Oxford/KREO, but still not much.

@Namer18 is the true hero of this thread. Everyone else is saying 'What the..?' and he's 'Hmm, new parts...' ;-)

I'm as much of the 'What the..?' reaction myself, but I know there's a fandom and collectors' market for trainers and I guess Adidas know it well and exploit it for cash, so I figure let them have it if they want it...

By in Canada,

If this was a MOC or a one-off as part of an official advertising campaign, I would say that it was cleaver and well done. I like seeing people build anything that isn't a building or vehicle.

However, the fact that it exists as a production set, just boggles my mind. Someone in the marketing department is grossly overestimating the appeal.
