Light up your room in style

Posted by ,

WLWYB, the company that produces the periodic table of LEGO colours, has launched a new product: light-up LEGO letters.

They can be purchased here and for a limited time you can use our exclusive code BRICKSET10 to receive 10% off your order.

The company offered to send me one to evaluate so, for hopefully obvious reasons, I chose an H.

They stand about 20cm tall and their width obviously depends on the letter. The H is about 17cm.

You can buy them ready-made or as a kit, which is slightly cheaper. Mine came ready-made. They are constructed with genuine LEGO pieces: two layers of white bricks finished off with black plates around the edges.

Three sheets of card are sandwiched between the layers of LEGO, the front one being translucent. Warm-white LED strips are affixed to the central layer around the edges of the letter which results in a very even illumination. The cable, which is about 1m long, is terminated in a standard USB connector, so it can be powered from your computer or a phone charger.

It might look a bit flimsy, but it's surprisingly sturdy.

As you'd hope, all 26 letters are available and, despite the W being much larger than the I, they are all the same price: €59.99 as a kit or €69.99 ready-made.

If you're looking to light up your LEGO room with style, you can purchase them here and for a limited time you can use our exclusive code BRICKSET10 to receive 10% off your order.

Perhaps you'll buy enough to spell your name? Or 'LEGO' ?

Thanks to WLWYB for providing the item for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I don’t get it.

Ok, so I get the whole 'novelty lighting' thing - it's not to illuminate a room but to add a bit of personality to it. In that respect, Lego based lighting seems like a great idea if you're a Lego fan.

And the execution seems just what is expect it to be - simple enough, but reliable and sturdy. I can even tell that it's Lego bricks, which is kinda the whole point.

But there's a lack of colour, and I'm not sure about some of the letter designs. I'll leave it to other commenters to either agree or disagree, but I'm not sure about the rounded parts of B and P (but S is fine). R is a little bit worse than those two. And the angles where it's most noticeably Lego are fine on most of them, but X and Y are awkward.

Which is sad. Also, the price!

Hmmm, nice but pricey even with the 10% discount. I like the idea of having LEGO lit up in my Lego den but thats still £215.96 (with discount) and there's a fair few sets I can buy for that amount that would provide more R&R and look better too. Had they been, say...£29.99 they'd have got a new customer.

I think it’s better to just buy normal led lights, without lego brick and you will get a similar effect for much lower price

I would like these so much better if they were only half or even less of this size. Their size makes up their price (that's a great unintentional rhyme there) which is why they're so expensive; these things would be much more affordable if they'd be smaller. This would also result in them taking up less space so making a full word will also be a lot more accessible apart from being less costly in the first place. And yes, the lack of color is also a bit of a disappointment. Just having the front layer of bricks in another color than just black would already drastically improve the aesthetic and make for some more personalization options too. This is a great concept though, I really hope the company will make more alterations to this first batch!

Also I'd love to purchase some of those card sheets seperately (along with a light kit maybe) so that I can customize them with just my own bricks. Still though, a smaller version would be much more attractive.

By in Sweden,

If they'd be half the price (and perhaps smaller, I'd be ok with that) I would be very interested. I think the black is a bit boring, but if these are regular LEGO bricks, that's very easily remedied. I can see myself having fun experimenting with different colors.

It would be handy if they included a female USB connector on each letter to allow them to be daisy-chained together.

Yowza…it’s an interesting concept but perhaps not pushed to the final stage of product development. Everyone is voicing exactly what the main issues are with these. Not that it’s a bad idea, it’s very cool.

My son would love to have his name spelled out with something like this. Unfortunately to do that would take up a ton of real estate, cost more than an extremely expensive LEGO set and be very difficult to wire and consequently hide the wiring.

Hope the developers haven’t gone too deep into this (it appears to be smartly designed in that there don’t appear to be parts that required mold-making) so perhaps if the product doesn’t fly off their shelves they can tinker with it. If it does do well more power to them.

How much, lol? As someone who works for themselves at weekends, I appreciate the price and cost of stuff, but, this is nuts for what it is. Nice idea, well done, but it's a no from me

I really hate websites that require a full address before showing the shipping cost.

Lighting + Lego = Rip Off.

At first I thought this was a reveal of Lego's previously teased lighting system.

I wish they sent Huw a kit so he could evaluate the building process, given if the building process was frustrating would make sense why there are more expensive prebuilt letters.

It's "H" as in "HELGO", the ancient Greek spelling for automatic binding bricks. Obviously.
