Random part of the day: Right Panel 3X7
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random part is 64391, 'Right Panel 3X7', which is a Technic part, category Beams W/ Shapes. It was introduced in 2009 and has appeared in 106 sets.
If you'd like to buy some you should find them for sale at BrickLink.

Random part of the day cool !!!!!
Yes -- a couple of people suggested it. It will normally be posted at 1am, just before RSotD.
It will select only System or Technic pieces and I've tried to filter out uninteresting parts such as string, tubes, wheels etc. but the algorithm might need tweaking if some slip through.
Wow this is a new one! I wonder how the randomiser applies here when compared to random set of the day
Edit: Looks like Huw already beat me with an answer
I look forward to the daily comments. Hopefully they will be as entertaining and educational as the RSotD comments.
Some lore, anyone?
Technic panels are very interesting, actually! This is an example of the third generation of them. I wrote an article about their history back in 2019: https://brickset.com/article/42654/a-history-of-technic-panels-part-1

Some wheels, and more specifically, tires may still be interesting to discuss though, albeit because they’re new, rare, unusual, popular, nostalgic etc.

Please leave one item of string in the mix, just for laugh :)
This is nice! Look forward to the comments.
I’m not a Technic guy so today I have to remain silent.
@huw could you tweak the algorithm so that between consecutive day parts from various categories are selected?
I was one of the people who suggested it and am really excited to see how it goes. I was partly wondering if people had interesting names for some of the parts but must admit my family don’t have a name for this one.
^ Not easily. Let's see how it plays out over the next few weeks and I'll modify things if needed.

But dear Huwbot has kept Clickits parts in, though? Right?!
I already love this new feature!
Thank you @Huw.
Love it!
Great new feature ??
In future there will be two kinds of Bricksetters: those who remember back in September 2021 when Right Panel 3x7 was the first RPotD and those who don’t.
Nice new feature. Thank you
This is a great idea @Huw! Is there any way the post can include the number of Brickset members who own the part, and maybe even the total quantity of the part owned by members? E.g. “x Brickset members own a total of y of this part”
Ooh, I like this idea.
^ That's an interesting idea but the data doesn't exist. Users have to opt in to parts collection functionality and even then the data is not stored permanently: it's deleted after a period of not logging in, and recreated the next time they do so.

And then there's the third kind that'll remember the actual first RPotD - a square 10 x 10 net (although it was up for, like, half a minute).

If they slip through, they were interesting enough :)
This should be interesting.
Very interesting feature (so long as Huwbot doesn't think that there were no parts produced before 1978!)

Like Bionicle
;-p
More work for Huwbot makes for a happy line of data code.
Never specifically noticed this part before. Then again, that probably goes for *most* parts introduced post-2008, for me...
Returning back to topic, I always wondered why they made the far end at an angle instead of just straight across, as it makes it very difficult to use these panels without leaving a space? Although the gaps mostly disappear if you are artistic enough, and are far less than the horrible original type 1 panels. These also seem to be limited to just external body shaping, unlike the box like panels with connection points on all 4 sides which are far more versatile.

There were a few test posts before that, actually ;-)
A red one! Ooooooohh!!!

You can sum the products of how many times the part appears in each set that contains it, and the number of members who own each set. It will not count the parts that were acquired in a pick-a-brick for example, but it provides a lower bound for the total number: “at least x Brickset members own at least y of this part in total”.
Huh, I can’t edit my previous comment it seems? Well I was gonna add that adding duplo, constraction, and maybe some obscure categories like Scala or ZNAP would also be pretty cool IMO. It’d evoke a lot more talking and fun, right?
(What I’m saying is that I don’t see the need to filter out certain parts, except maybe imageless ones)
Ah yes, a modern panel.
...
I don't have a lot so say here. I mean, I like sets that make use of it like 5974 and 8080 , but I think the image speaks more words about it than I ever could.
To be honest I would rather look at this part on Bricklink, as their database is more parts-oriented and less dependent on Lego's own data (so that part number changes are less likely to hide previous availability and the database is more complete in general). To me Brickset is more of a set database.

You are right. Let me see what I can do...

This is an interesting concept and I like the idea. But will BIONICLE and CCBS parts appear in the future?
Love the new article series, would it be possible to add in the text how many colours the part appears in? Not vital information but interesting

I was thinking more along the lines of querying how many people own copies of the sets that the part appears in, and the quantity of the part in each set. Although I appreciate it’s slightly trickier as you’d need to account for duplicates, i.e. where one member owns several of the sets.

Yes it should be!
awesome. great idea! are minifig parts included as well?
This new feature is perhaps the most likely thing yet to send me back into my only-recently-emerged-from-dark-age. Part of the day, forsooth.
"This represents the first truly designed SNOT brick, as opposed to the former abuse of the 1x1 headlight. Fans look back on the day of its release as the turning point between traditional and modern construction techniques, the tension between which is still felt today. We interviewed legendary brick-identifier..."
This is great.
It would be good if it could list how many colour variants it has in circulation and the first set it was found in.
Brickset is a fantastically geeky site!
This part reminded me of 70810 Metalbeard's Sea Cow (the white sails), but apparently different sizes were used in that set.
uuuuh nice thing!
this idea is going to take off!
I see a year of introduction, but for those parts now not produced any more will there be a year of last known use? This part for example is implied to be still under production, but is it? In general I suggest that there be a more explicit reference to the end of the interval, if there is one, as below.
Current parts;
It was introduced in 2009 and has appeared in 106 sets (so far).
Retired parts:
It was introduced in 2009 and has appeared in 106 sets until (end year).
As for this part itself, I only recently got into Technic so I at least know what it is.
Very unusual part to kick off random part of the day!

My dad and me were jamming plates vertically in between horizontal studs in the 70's and 80's and would have LOVED the insane selection of SNOT elements we have now :D
Is that headlight use really considered abuse?
I love this, always want to try and find new, useful, and/or interesting parts.
I can't wait for 3020 to appear!
parts....Parts!!....PARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool new feature! I love it. I don't care for this part (or this era of Technic panels in general), though. All the angles and thing curves made everything feel too angular, but also gappy and flimsy. Just not even remotely my favorite Technic look.

Can't we also get Bionicle/CCBS parts as well? Having more specific unique parts come up will evoke a lot more interesting discussions than just plain generic ones.

Maybe 'XX Brickset users own sets containing this part'?
