Random part of the day: Windscreen 14X3X4 No. 1
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random part is 70495, 'Windscreen 14X3X4 No. 1', which is a System part, category Windscreens And Cockpits. It was introduced this year and has been made in 1 colour and has appeared in 1 set, 10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van.
Our members collectively own a total of 1,027 of them. If you'd like to buy some you should find them for sale at BrickLink.

Well... that sure is a windscreen.
That’s half a stud wider than the wheels on my Shellraiser.
996 members own 10279 and 1027 parts are owned, so the script is considering the additional parts from members who own more than one set. Well done!

It's a bit of a shame that the part that was new for the T2 is the main part that makes the front look so wrong!
Now I get the argument that perhaps some sort of time dilation window for this series should be introduced. For me one part made a few months ago specifically for one set is not all that interesting. Some unique part made years ago, that would generate some memories and stories. I wager there is not much to say here except “ja I like, got this the other day and uh, nice.”
@MeisterDad:
This might be more difficult than it sounds. For sets, about 1.5 new sets are being added to the pool per day, so as time goes by the untapped pool will simply grow in size. Once you eliminate prints, and ignore colors, I’m not sure the same can be said for parts. Over time the pool may shrink, and eventually dry up. Holding back several years of newer parts would simply hasten any potential drought.
Why should this part be any less interesting than for example a Clikits part from years ago? Just because it is brand new does not make it bad. Oh wait, that was today's RSOTD...
:-)
Well, if you discount Clikits (and I believe you should always discount those) this is the first piece I don't actually own. Not really surprising given its limited use, but a little sad it's after only 1 week.
It's an absolute unit of a piece though. 14x3x4? I don't think there's a bigger one...
Big old windscreen. How big are the vehicles if the windscreen is that long?
Wow sure beats 6247783 at only 12 studs, although this has found more uses from Austin Martins, Ford Mustangs and even in train station cafeterias 60051 .

There's quite a few pieces that are much bigger. But I guess you were specifically talking about windscreens?

Big new windscreen, I think you mean.
As a fig-scale person who is apathetic about building wheeled transports, I can't ever see needing or wanting this part in isolation, but no doubt it has value to the builders of larger scaled vehicles.
I like the windscreen. Ordered one at Bricks and Pieces, but it came scratched. Even when a replacement was sent separately, there were still some scratches. I wonder how that could be avoided.
Other than that, I hope TLG will make a mould for a kind of tapered, curved windscreen. That would be really useful for Creator scale vehicles.
@PurpleDave:
I appreciate the complexity there is in choosing parameters of this series. There is the added limitation of having only official LEGO-based part numbers which would further diminish the available frame from which to draw a sample. Besides, we also get a bonus set of the day in this series when a suggested set containing today’s part is mentioned. I am waiting for the day when the suggested set here and the “usual” random set will be the same.

But not as clearly as windscreens used to be!
Biggest windscreen I got is the 10 wide one from 31083 : Cruising Adventures , but that was a minifig scale set, so in that context still large, as it was also the windscreen of 10252 : Volkswagen Beetle or 10258: London Bus
Another Mini(doll) scale set used 3 of them on another boat : 41317 : Sunshine Catamaran
It's hard to imagine this 14x3x4 be used in something figure scale.

Glass-bottomed tour boat fore or aft hull piece?

The vehicle is 16 studs wide; the standard width for Creator Expert vehicles.

I guess they're scratched during production, when hundreds of them are dumped together into a single bin. I wish they'd find a new production process for large transparent pieces which takes better care of them, because almost all of them are getting scuffed.

Or it's just people regularly adding their sets. It's only one percent more, and the T2 hasn't been out for long.

Yep, I think this may have reminded some people to add their new T2. :-)
