For when you want to populate your island paradise with palm shrubs.
What, they haven’t made this in 3 years!? Has it been replaced by a new design number? This part is great!
@MeisterDad : It must have a new part number, because Bricklink has it in several sets since then.
This part is wonderful for making simple trees.
The newer part number is 65738.

good for trees!
Mine all come from 4208, one of the first sets to use this part. I bought it new from a Target out of my region (almost two hours away) on a trip before my hometown Walmart stocked the set. And it's almost ten years old. Yikes! That long?!!!
Fortunately Bricklink doesn’t rely on updated part numbers, but do inform you about changes. This one is a good example.
Strange coincidence, this morning I decided to rebuild the Forest Fire (4208 and 4209) and Forest Police (4436, 4437, 4440 and 4441) as well as other sets also released in 2012, including the 4433 which uses the black variant.

Yes, if we ever rank lego parts by how good caltrops they make, this one is going to be quite high on there. It loses some points by being less effective when on its side or upside down, but at the same time it prefers the upright position when thrown.
Maybe I should start this ranking...

2x2 round brick with spikes would be another strong contender, but I agree, Caltrop Ranking (CR) is obviously the reason we have rbotd!
This is a great space part.

I wouldn't wanna step on design 98578 HALF SPIKE BALL either.
Somehow Brickset doesn't have the part included in 70325 which is the only set with the trans-orange version, and the same theme has it it in other colors like neon orange in 70363
