It's kind of ironic, since it's name is "cross axle 7M".
Anyone know what made it mad?

Presumably the fact that it can only be molded in light grey or yellow

It's probably mad because it's not the Ultimate Axle
70336 : Ultimate Axl

Shouldn’t the set be Ultimat Axl, then?

I suppose it's used for Ultimate Destruction because it's in set :
70356 : The Stone Colossus of Ultimate Destruction
I own 69 of this piece lmao
Surprisingly, Brickset's database is correct about date of production for once - it took until 2003 for Lego to produce a 7 long axle.
@Mr__Thrawn:
Maybe it tried to buy itself in black, and realized it can’t afford to? $10/ea, New, minimum!
A lame axle. It's an odd number, and it doesn't come in black.

Light grey axles rock!
Ooo, extremely low basic caltrop rating, but essentially this piece is the base plate for serious caltrop damage. 1/5.
Don’t leave this piece unattended with bionicle eyes.

Well they can't make it in light red because then it would be a Cross Axle Rose
What does the M stand for?
Is this the first really useable RPOTD?
Seeing this, is like an old friend stopping by for a beer.
According to the database, drome racers (835n) were released in january 2003 e.g. before the backhoe (july 2003).
From quick check:
This axle is available in most colours (six) of all (straight) axles.
length of 7 stud axle = 5.5cm
total owned = 6,949,688
total length = 382,232.84m or about 382km
that's about the distance between Mexico City and Acapulco or the east to west dimension of Costa Rica :)
@Wrecknbuild:
Her Majesty, Great Britain, MI6, and James Bond?

By no means. The last two days' parts have been useful, and there have been others, although this may be the most utilitarian so far.
Almost ALL of these that I've owned in sets - sixteen pieces, out of eighteen total - came from Bionicle. Though I suppose I shouldn't be hugely surprised by that, since I've never owned many standard technic sets, which look like the most common source of these - 170 of the sets to include them are Technic.
Didn't even realise these were new in 2003, when I got my first one in 8595. If I even registered that they were an unfamiliar length at all at the time, I would just have assumed they were simply a length I personally hadn't encountered before; since technic axels generally had been around for a while before my time.
@ThatBionicleGuy:
3, 5, and even from 2 to I think 12 were pretty common for a long time. 7 and 9 were late additions for the odd team, and 32 is from Soccer.
I was quite surprised to find out about this part whilst building 8595, although it wasn't as wshocking a reveal as it was back in 1998 when they introduced the 5M axle.
Not only were the 5M ones the first new axles in 15 years (the one before that would have been 3M in 1983) I also overlooked them on the 'axle measurements page' of several smaller Technic sets I got in January 1998 for almost half a year...

Thinking of those, I think it stands for Mo(o)re.
