Appropriately for Halloween, LEGO has today announced three new additions to the Super Mario theme! They take inspiration from the popular Luigi's Mansion series, which follows Luigi capturing ghosts.

New LEGO Super Mario theme to hit shelves 1st January 2022 for some ghost-catching fun… Luigi’s Mansion is coming to fans in the form of three new sets: Luigi’s Mansion Lab and Poltergust Expansion Set, Luigi’s Mansion Entryway Expansion Set, and Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek Expansion Set.

LEGO Super Mario fans, rejoice! The LEGO Group has just announced its latest edition to the popular LEGO Super Mario universe; this time treating fans to three new Expansion Sets all wrapped in the iconic Nintendo series, Luigi’s Mansion. Fans will be introduced to fun new features designed to inspire creative play, featuring fan favourites King Boo, Polterpup, Bogmire, Toad, Boo and many more charming characters from the Luigi’s Mansion series.

View the continued press release and set images after the break...

Use a LEGO Luigi (or LEGO Mario) interactive figure from one of the Starter Courses to bring to life these new challenges that await, and brace for ghostly adventures that feature new immersive sounds and music, which is sure to add extra fun and interactivity. In the LEGO Super Mario Luigi’s Mansion Lab and Poltergust Expansion Set suit up with the Poltergust and attach a normal nozzle or the Strobulb accessory. Press the button to activate the Poltergust to catch the Gold Ghost and collect a coin reward from the machine in the lab. Don’t forget to have a chat with Professor E. Gadd and check out the potions, but be careful not to be poisoned or you will need the antidote!

Explore LEGO Super Mario Luigi’s Mansion Entryway Expansion Set and manoeuvre your way into the frightful mansion, where you’ll need to find a creative way to defeat Bogmire. Search for the Golden Bone to give to Polterpup, and watch out for Boo!

Within the LEGO Super Mario Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek Expansion Set, players can create a gem-hunting, ghost-battling level with rotating hallways to explore. Uncover hidden gems throughout the set. And for the ultimate chilling experience, builders can connect all three new sets or build out their LEGO Luigi’s Mansion levels with other fun LEGO Super Mario sets and characters that will spark imagination and take their play experience to the next level.

All new sets come with their own series of unique challenges, giving fans a chance to dive into the world of LEGO Super Mario with a Luigi’s Mansion twist and role play new storylines and challenges to collect as many coins as possible!

Well this just makes me want a D2C Luigi's Mansion...

By in Singapore,

As someone who's terrified of horror games but always wanted Luigi's Mansion but never got a GameCube...

I want these, to make up for not having the game.

By in Ireland,

Is the mansion invisible or something?

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I hope for more stuff like this. Especially with content from Luigi's Mansion 3.

Seriously play that game, is really fitting for Halloween

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh man I’d love for them to do sunshine next, so much nostalgia for that one! Probably wouldn’t happen tho since it hasn’t gotten any sequels recently.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is on the Switch, if you have one of those. It's pretty great.

Lol at all the haters a year ago, "we wanted minifigures, these will never sell," now they're doing spinoffs.

I'm glad that the Bluetooth platform is opening up new gameplay styles, I'm eager to see what product designers introduce.

I don’t recommend it if you don’t like spiders though…

I'm glad Nintendo and LEGO are acknowledging Luigi's Mansion. Makes me think they might start looking at other Nintendo IPs. Wish there was a proper model of Luigi's Mansion as well

Not the Switch either, sadly :(

Ha, I only like the cute ones and not video game spiders (except the one from the indie game Webbed).

Wow! Unexpected (I certainly wouldn't have expected to get characters like E. Gadd and Polterpup before we'd even gotten a set with Princess Peach), but these look great! It's neat to see spinoffs being explored with new gameplay styles (while retaining the awesome physical play features we've come to expect from the theme).

By in United States,

Very pleasantly surprised to see elements from the original Luigi's Mansion (as opposed to the more relevant and kid-friendly* LM3, which is great as well to be sure), didn't think we'd be getting Bogmire or Garbage Can Ghost merch in 2021. Also, LM style King Boo is just the best.

(*Not that the original Luigi's Mansion is a mature game or anything, but there's a reason it spawned rumors of suicidal imagery and a removed foe that would threaten to behead Luigi. The new games sure didn't get murmurs like that lol)

Pretty sure it was the second game that had the giant spider boss in the cellar lol

By in United States,

Nice surprise! Cool sets. I love character of King Boo. Looks great here. I have a nephew who would love these.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Although LEGO is categorizing it as so, Luigi’s Mansion is not a Super Mario game. It is adjacent to Mario but it is its own side franchise.

What sets could we see next—Yoshi’s Island? Mario Kart? I know I am still wishing for Zelda.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wasn't interested in the Mario stuff and I'm not interested in this either. Glad some people enjoy them though, I never like it when Lego themes fail

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Ooooooh i freaking love these! Big want overhere!

They should've used minion parts for E. Gadd, he's rounder than that

Gravatar
By in United States,

Aw man, these are cool! Although I love LM3, it's great seeing the original game's specters (cooler designs imo). Alas, since I'm too old (or unimaginative) for the game element of these sets, I'm holding out for some normal ones.

Probably good though, I need to steel myself for the Great Wallet Purge, a cataclysm to take place the second they announce anything Zelda!

Yeah he doesn't look great, the lack of a nose is really disturbing

Still love him though

By in United States,

Wait a second... what's that structure King Boo is perched on? It's probably just the altar that you find him at in the original game, but it kind of looks to me like it might be a microsacle model of Luigi's Mansion...?

EDIT: Yes, I think it IS a micro model of the mansion. If you look at the rest of the scene carefully, you can see that there is an empty portrait sitting in front of it, to give the illusion that it's a mansion inside the painting. This is a reference to the final boss of the original game, where you fight King Boo on a projection of the roof of the mansion inside a painting. Very, very cool that they re-created it here!

I don't think I've ever seen spiders on my LM3 playthrough - even if I stopped early on the game because I'm kinda incompetent on gaming.

At least I hope to re-enact the later game experience by buying these sets!

Gravatar
By in United States,

If anyone is wondering why these are coming out, it's because Luigi's Mansion on Switch has sold over 10 million copies.

The entire theme has a blocky design language. Exhibit A is Mario and Luigi.

So far there's been one, while yours is the second one about the "minifigure crowd". I guess complaining about the nonexistent complainers is the thing now.

Even gold spiders. Too bad you couldn’t really buy stuff with all the money you earned in LM3

By in United States,

I really like that E. Gadd figure, and the Grabbing and Garbage Can Ghosts came out well. The style really works for them. Bogmire is a nice surprise. I kinda wish there was more from the sequels than just Polterpup, though.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Why didn't they just use four dark green 1 x 3 bricks on 71399?
Edit: well, maybe they did use a few...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lugi's Mansion is also on the 3DS as well. There is also Dark Moon, which explains the gap between 1 and 3.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Oh my god. I freaking called it! Looks like my brother now owes me $50!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Interesting... a new mold for the overalls that looks the same, with the addition of a pocket.

Yeah. It's called that in Europe, and was called that everywhere before the title was finalized.

I still call it 2 because it's just easier lol

Coincidentally, 2021 marks the 20th Anniversary of Luigi's Mansion.

It still doesn't have the same charm as the first game does. Plus the ghosts are much better in one too.

By in Norway,

I'm always impressed with the amount of play features in these sets. Disregarding the scannable stickers, I count two in the 71399 Entryway Expansion Set. The door apears to have a platform infront of it that acts as a button to knock the doors open and there is a catapult mechanic that shoots a black shell-thing to hit the purple ghost (excuse my Non mario lingo).

71401 Haunt and Seek Expansion Set seems to have something going on with each segment.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The ghost in the third one looks like a pickle!

Gravatar
By in United States,

My son is pretty pumped. He’s big into the LEGO Mario theme and he loved Luigi’s Mansion 3 on Switch. This is great!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the 71401 Haunt and Seek expansion set should've been divided in to 2 or more smaller sets.

I don't think that's quite the purpose of the picture frame. The open portrait is meant to represent Toad being trapped in a painting. There's also a scannable tile under Toad that I'll bet is meant to be used to trap Mario in the painting instead if you have him (with sound effects and panicked facial expressions) like in the original game!

While you are admittedly correct (I did see an image elsewhere earlier today showing a Toad behind the portrait), I don't think I'm wrong, either, as that build King Boo is perched on seems very specifically placed a small distance behind the portrait. If I had to guess, the portrait here is supposed to be serving both purposes, just like in the original game, where King Boo traps Luigi inside of Mario's portrait for the final battle on the "roof". Which makes it even more impressive!

...I could easily be overthinking this though, that could just be a generic stylized platform King Boo is sitting on lol

By in United States,

71397 gives me hope for more accessories. Like F.L.U.D.D for Mario, for example. Which would be awesome.

First of all buy a GameCube. Underrated system."

Not to diss the GameCube but most Wiis can play games from the system, just plug in a Memory Card and controller thingy.
My brother loves Luigi’s Mansion, especially the original, so he might be interested in these. It’s a relief to know that it works with both the Mario and Luigi figures, even if the former has never wielded a Poltergust— would it be jumping the shark if they tried Mario’s Mansion? Maybe have a four-player one with Gooigi and an-all new Gooario thrown in the mix? Or just a two-player one with the Mansion 3 mechanics for him/them? Okay, I’m done, don’t worry.

By in Germany,

Hmmmm, not sure if I will buy that one too. I did bought some discounted Luigi sets and the idea isn’t bad at all, but I’m missing some feature which would keep me up to start the app. XD Still nice to have a official Lego Yoshi now.
