Super Mario and Monkie Kid sets revealed in China
Posted by Huw,
The China International Import Expo has also yielded the first images of four more Super Mario sets for 2022 and this Monkie Kid set, 80035 Galactic Explorer, the nature of which suggests an interesting twist to the story of the eponymous hero's journey to the west.
We now have images of all seven of the 2022 1HY Super Mario sets, including another series of character packs. You can view the new ones after the break.

Usually I'm really excited for several of the character pack sets but... honestly of this wavve, I just like the little mouse/rat guy and the wind-up guy.
Yay, a beach biome! Shame there aren't more (regular) Urchins and Bloopers in the expansions and only a Huckit Crab due to the focus on land — I guess I don't mind having two of those anyway. More Cheep Cheeps is great!
For the first time, I don't recognize any of the characters in a Mario Character Pack series.
Galactic Explorer. Nice name, could have been used 40 years ago.
Both excited and utterly disappointed for that 80035
Name association alone has me feeling this.
Loving the beach Mario sets! I'm almost certainly gonna get Dorrie's Beachfront.
But I don't think I recognise any of the character pack characters, though...
Love!!! the 80035 Galactic Explorer - I think the Monkie Kid line has the same energy, enthusiasm and excitement in the designs that the Lego Movie/Batman Move sets captured so well, and also what is missing from a lot of the IP themes
I'm interested seeing more Monkie Kid sets.
In Australia, the line seems to have utterly failed. It was only available in one franchise (Mr Toys) and they've started clearancing all the sets out at half-price (I picked up a few this week) just to get rid of them. The staff at my local store (who I've gotten friendly with, particularly over the last year when I bought a lot of Lego to tide me through lockdowns) said they're done with the line, they won't be getting more in, which I thought was interesting.
These are the worst set advertisement pictures i have seen.
The new Super Mario blind bag series has a Coin Coffer, Stingby, Para-Biddybud, Goombrat, Tuxie (not sure this is the official name, but it's the baby penguin), Bully, Little Skull Mouser, Ant Trooper and Mechakoopa. The walking icicle I couldn't identify. I think he's one of the better looking ones though. He has that classic Super Mario look. I wonder if full on snow sets will be in the next wave. With the previously released Penguin Mario Power-Up Pack and these two new ice biome characters coming out...
Edit: I found out the icicle's name is Freezie.
Oh wow! Hopefully there is more than just one MK set coming :)

I hope so, especially as that set is very Endgame with all the characters in identical boring white outfits ??
I love how Bowser’s Chinese translated name is “Cool Tyrant”.
Damn, I don't much care for the minifigures, but that is one awesome spaceship. I might have to get the set just for it!
80035 looks more like Flash Gordon's rocket.
80025 seems to confirm the existence of Octan in the Monkie Kid world. It's an interesting set, but I will have to see the other sets coming out at the same time in order to make a judgement. not high on my list in any regard.
I wonder if Monkie Kid is going to meet those rabbits living on the moon.
Each time I see a new Monkie Kid set I get extremely sad. Why they aren't sold here in Brazil? WHY??? The ONLY theme not sold here. :(
I guess we won't see another Super Mario Collectible Figures Series if so many characters get into the sets.
The Galactic Explorer also hits another nostalgia note besides the name: it really reminds me of the Japanese toys I always covered when I was a child in Taiwan. Or maybe some were Taiwanese knock-offs, this was when "made in Taiwan" was trash not high end. I saw this in the Monkie Kid Mech too and a few other sets, but none quite as strong as this. Very excited for MK to go down a different track than Ninjago especially for Western audiences who are always like "what's the difference" without really thinking about what they're saying...
Ooh! That windup koopa from the toy levels in Super Mario Galaxy!!!
Mario sets look nothing like the Mario games.
Galactic explore puts me in mind of 6776 ogels command center rocket despite the obvious history of the name.
Light blue roller coaster pieces!
@Aragosta
Small correction, I believe it's a Scaredy-Rat and not a Little Skull Mouser. Thank you for identifying them.
I have not been interested in MK, but that Galactic set looks awesome! I may have to look into one for once.
All of these look great!
The Monkie Kid set is INCREDIBLE, with some awesome-looking techniques and a lot of really cool figs. Sandy being a regular minifigure is a little odd, but it works (and a costume change would be much more expensive for a bigfig than it would be for a traditional minifigure).
The Mario sets look great too! I'd been feeling like there weren't enough good water levels so far (there were many levels that HAD water areas but very few where the beach and ocean were the main setting). I'm very excited to see characters like Dorrie and the Big Urchin as well as a third Yoshi color!
The new character packs look great to me too, arguably more excited than the third series. Unlike the last few series there's zero repeat figures, and the inclusion of two ice-themed biomes gives me hope that we might see some more snowy levels in the future.
Love the colors and style of Galactic Explorer. It looks a bit painfully un-aerodynamic for a rocket…I’m holding out hope that it has lots of transformative features though. I’ll definitely be looking out for more information on it. Mario is Mario. Nice stuff it’s just not my theme.
Hitting the bottom of the barrel for character packs. Luckily though, even though they’re mostly unrecognisable characters their designs look great still.

They look teal/bright bluish green/dark turquoise to me.
The Monkie Kid Galactic Explorer is longer than the Space Police II Galactic Mediator and just as wide, though it's a few studs short of the Space Police III Galactic Enforcer in length and width. It's about four studs wider than the Classic Space Galaxy Explorer and about fourteen studs longer. It's definitely big enough to inherit the Galactic + _________ naming scheme, I just never expected to see the heir to that line of spaceships come through Monkie Kid without much traditional Lego Space styling.
Ah man, I was just gonna' send a siting about the MK stuff last night...oh well, next time:)
The Super Mario character packs look great. An ice/snow biome is hinted i guess. Need all of them, that Parabiddybud should come in more colours, so i guess i’ll try to get more and use a sharpie on other colours to make them.
Freezie is an enemie from the original Mario Bros game, and they can be seen on the icy parcours in Mario Kart too

Umm one of those photos *is* the next Mario CFS ;)
Every time an Octan symbol shows up I get irrationally happy, haha
@DavidBrick:
I see regular primary yellow in every shot (a bit washed out in the last one, but...), and I see some bright-light-orange trim on the space totem, and as a finial on one of the Bowser flags. If you think you see a new shade of yellow, you’ll need to be a _LOT_ more specific.
Lovely sets bring on Marvel, Dc, star wars and Harry Potter now For 2022!

Mechakoopa was the only one that caught my eye. The bee, ladybug, and green guy are from 3D Land/World. I recognize the purple guy but not where he’s from. The horned one is Bully from Mario 64 and the penguin is also from 64 or Galaxy. I vaguely recognize the rat but at the same time I’m probably getting it confused with another enemy. The orange Goomba has me stumped.

That’s a Goombrat
For those unfamiliar with the Mario characters in the character pack, a number of them are from the New Super Mario Bros. (which have been the core 2D Mario titles over the past decade and a half), Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 3D World.
But even for more old-school players, there are a few familiar faces! Mechakoopas originated in Super Mario World back in 1990, and the Bully and Baby Penguin first appeared in Super Mario 64 in 1996 (though the bully has had a design update since then — they original design was black with horns pointing upward, while the modern design from Super Mario 3D World is dark blue with horns pointing forward). And as others have mentioned, Freezies are about as classic as they come!
All in all, a lot of these characters are ones I'd been thinking would be great additions to the LEGO Super Mario theme (either as sets or MOCs), so it's nice to know that LEGO had the same idea! It's great to know this theme hasn't run out of steam.
I can see plenty more room for growth in the future, like expansion packs inspired by snow/ice levels or cave levels. Plus, there are still a few enemies and bosses that I feel would be awesome to see in the LEGO Super Mario style, like Hammer Bros, Chargin' Chucks, Snifits, Broozers, King Bob-Omb, and Dry Bowser.
Looking forward to seeing more of what next year has in store!
I think the Monkie Kid line is fantastic, but it doesn't seem any adult collectors have caught on yet. I've had monkie kid figures and sets in my Bricklink store for about a year, with zero orders. Looking forward to getting those orange mohawk parts!

I think it's not that people haven't caught on, it's just that they're awfully expensive for an unlicensed theme (and until recently they've been mostly available directly from LEGO, so no usual retailer discounts etc.).
That rocket looks like it was launched from the planet Krypton with a baby Kal-El inside.
After seeing interior on 80035 , it's a much much cooler looking set, 8 wide, 2 cockpit, 4 chairs inside, a reactor room , and another round hollow space to put the mini vehicle or a prisoner in.

The thing with monkie kid has been Zero discounts.
@ForestMenOfEndor:
Based on the color scheme, more like a baby Captain Marv-El.

The Monkie Kid theme was designed for and is marketed primarily to consumers in China and across Asia Pacific, where, according to TLG's 2020 annual report, it is one of the top-selling themes. I imagine the theme has made its journey to store shelves in the west mainly because TLG is no longer doing region-specific themes, but sales expectations outside of Asia are modest at best.
Personally, it's one of my favorite new themes in years, but yes I think we are in the minority as far as the west goes.
Wonder if a space-themed Ninjago wave could be in the works; it seems natural given their progression through various environments.
Just when I thought I could sneak by without getting into the MK line they go and put a spaceship set out there. With stylized suits. And Octan. And minifig-sized Sandy? This might be the one that does it for me.
Sandy shrank lol
Loving the space reference in MK. As a new-ish collector, this is great.

Either medium or dark azure for me. But they've already used dark azure for Sky World, and I don't own 71389 so I'm not sure what Mario sees when over a dark azure element, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's medium azure. It's way too bright and too blue to be teal.
Fingers crossed that Lego have gone back to there being two full sets of the collectible character packs in a box with this one.
@LegoSonicBoy and @Be_hapi:
I just realized you're probably talking about the roller coaster pieces in 71400 Big Urchin Beach Ride. I'm looking at 80035 Galactic Explorer! :)
Why is Sandy a minifgure now? That's what I'm most interested in

There was also previously an Octan oil drum in 80013, albeit with only the Octan colors and not the logo! Similar oil drums have appeared as Octan references in a number of themes, even some licensed ones like Batman or Marvel Super Heroes.

So he can fit inside the rocket ship along with his comrades?

Ah, my mistake!
Based on the official render of 71400 the tracks in that set are dark azure.
