City Advent Calendar - Day 7

Posted by ,

Day 7 - this marks a week into the calendar, and we've had a bunch of microscales, one minifigure and one marginally festive build (whatever Day 3 was). We don't have any patterns for the gifts so far, so let's open the door and see what we have to finish the week.

We have a second minifigure today, with Big Betty. She's dressed in the attire we typically see her in on the City Adventure series. She's got a hockey stick, so apparently she's going to be playing hockey with Sam.

I love her hairpiece with the ballcap, ponytail and scrunchie. What a great piece!

She's also holding a jewel, and her alternate head features a mask, so if you weren't familiar with the show you could deduce that Betty obtains her jewels by less than legal means. However, I'm not sure why she would be playing hockey with Sam.

Again, no festive build, but Betty's trousers are kind of a shade of red....

"I'm not sure why she would be playing hockey with Sam" - festive truce?
Of course, you can tell she's a criminal from the striped shirt.

Don't all criminals in real life wear shirts advertising the fact that they're criminals?

I initially thought she intended to use the ruby as a hockey puck, and I thought, hang on, what?

No, Betty's stolen the goal buzzer so only her goals count.

I still love that jewel piece. I don't know if Adventurers actually introduced it, or just made iconic use of it; but they they were the first place I encountered the part, so it always gives me a nostalgic Adventurers vibe even when the context is otherwise not at all related.

Nice to see Sam and Betty express their antagonism in a healthy manner... ;)

I actually really like this kind of pairing in an Advent Calendar!

You are correct. The jewel was pretty much introduced in the Adventurers theme in sets 2995, 2996, 3021, 5958, 5978, 5919 and most memorably in 5988 . It was also used in the Ninja theme in sets 6045, 6083-2 and 6093 , but I doubt they would have created it just for that. It also appeared in one Scala set apparently, set 3118 in that year.

I remember when that piece came out, it seemed like such a fabulously exotic and exciting part. And now they're thrown in as spare parts!

@Zordboy:
One of my friends from college was working the register at a convenience store one night, and someone wearing a t-shirt with a distinctive print came in and robbed the place. Like many places train you, he opened the register, let the guy take all the cash, and only called the cops after the guy left. Cops show up, and my friend tells them, “I’m an art major, and here’s a drawing of the guy’s shirt.” I don’t know if they ever caught him, but that had to be an unusual experience for the cops.

The perfect alibi! She was playing hockey! The cops will never suspect her.

Sure. "Big Betty". Let's be honest here - that's Pam Poovey, and all of us are already dead.
