Marvel Advent Calendar - Day 2

Posted by ,

76196 The Avengers Advent Calendar included an exceptional Tony Stark minifigure yesterday. Maintaining the high standard therefore seems almost impossible!

Nevertheless, I remain optimistic...

Friends Advent Calendars have sometimes received criticism for containing accessory packs. Unfortunately, the Marvel equivalent appears today, with a selection of Power Blast elements. These trans-light blue parts are relatively common throughout Marvel and DC sets, so I think they could have been replaced with something more interesting here.

Of course, the Power Blasts complement the minifigure from yesterday which is welcome, thus providing some play value and various options for display. The spare trans-light blue 1x1 round plate with a hollow stud from yesterday also becomes more useful, potentially linking the Power Blasts.

Overall - 2.0 - While they might provide some play value, these Power Blasts are disappointing.

Very underwhelmed with these, even as they are my first example of them. I feel the Spider-Man webs version of this just works better.

I’d give this a 1.0. Disappointing thing to open, should’ve been in the same door as Iron Man.

that was so lame to open today :// like maybe some kids find is super cool, but for me... total disappointment :/

I was really disappointed, this morning, when I opened these. It messed up my whole day.

But the truth is, we knew they were coming because they're pretty visible on the front of the box. And these energy-effect pieces are so ubiquitous that it was a given they'd show up, at some point.

Put it this way. They showed up on Day 2, which means we got them out of the way early, and we won't be crushingly disappointed when they show up on Day 18 or whenever.

It's only up from here.

To some, they might make a nice accessory, but I am with the overwhelming majority that this is probably the low point of the calendar. Friends has scissors and hairbrushes, Star Wars has a gun rack, City has cups and glasses that go on a table, Harry Potter could have random stuff like food or wands, and Marvel has the power blast elements. I did not even take them out of the bag and just stuffed it right back into Door 2 so the cats wouldn't get to it. After yesterday, I definitely was not expecting another minifig, but I was hoping for a nice little build. At least we got this out of the way.

My son was asking about these bits as he saw them on the box - he'll be happy at least!

A waste of a day though - all filler, no killer.

It's a Disney crossover - these are Elsa's.

The response from No2 Nipper was very positive- he thought they brought yesterday’s figure to life, so it’s a thumbs up from me!

They're a cool accessory definitely but a bit of a disappointment. I'd rather yesterday was the figure with just the hair and today was the power blasts and a really simple workbench with the helmet on it or something. Just so there was something to actually build.

Failing that, give me one of the base pieces so he can at least stand up!

At least these can be used with a wider variety of characters.
I wasn't all that disappointed, because I figured this was coming.Still a bit of a disappointment, but at least I hadn't gotten my hopes up.

My eight year old's experience this morning:

1 - run to the kitchen to scoff the Day 2 chocolate Santa from his Cadbury calendar "the proper advent calendar" (his words, not mine...)
2 - run to the living room Lego table to open the Day 2 Power Blasts from his Marvel calendar
3 - instantly (and I do mean instantly) cast them aside unopened and run to the other Lego table to continue building 76166

On that basis, it's a 1 out of 5 at best :D

In fairness, Power Blasts are very cool pieces, and for another kid who doesn't already have them these will be brilliant to combine with yesterday's Iron Xmas figure.

As non-figure items go I think they're OK, and par for the course as 1/24th of a £25 LEGO Advent Calendar (none of us is expecting top value for money from these boxes after all, right?).

If we get a super jumper tomorrow, I'm going to be holding you personally responsible.

My 5 1/2 year old son was SEVERELY nonplussed by these. Waste of a day's adventing.

My son spent 24 hours excitedly anticipating door 2 on his Avengers Calendar. To open it and find a bunch of blue power blasts (which he has plenty of already) totally crushed him.

This is verging on cruel from Lego. Talk about Scrooge.

Taking a look on the Lego site I notice that later in the month there will be a bunch of infinity stones in one of the doors. I guess this is a good set for anyone who needs to complete all the colours but I'm not sure how kids can get that excited about some of the daily offerings.

I opened the day 2 door this morning and immediately closed it. Not worth the effort getting the bag out and opening it. Very underwhelmed. The only way is up now

Oh… Well, I for one really like these, they’re extremely useful for making dioramas and stuff. Blue is also my favorite color they come in by far (not even orange, that’s a first). I can understand that it may be a bit lackluster as a present for kids, but I will always welcome these no matter the situation they appear in! Although they may have been a bit too early, they would’ve fitted better if there was more on the table already to decorate with these. They could work great in some ice sculpture setting, for example.

Utter rubbish. The figure yesterday had accessories, and either this should have been included there, or not at all. You can't even use them without yesterday's accessories.

Hopefully this is the only instance of this, and different colour packs of blast effects aren't going to be this year's equivalent of the multiple flag days in the original HP calendar.

Day 3: a Super Jumper"

OH no, I had completely forgotten those existed!
I still don't have any of these power blast packs, but I just don't like the look of them, the shapes just look kind of wierd an generic, and just feel to specialized.

As an adult, I smirked a little and put it back in its spot. If I was a kid, I think I'd just chalk the day up as a failure and go back to bed.

So Day 2 is pretty good.

By in United States,

If this is a 2.0, I can't imagine what a 1.0 would be!

This is my first advent calendar in about 30 years and my first Lego advent calendar. It was terribly disappointing to have this crap be on the second day. In the (relatively few) Marvel sets that I've collected, these silly power pieces are usually set aside.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Blast and splat pieces are okay, but it did feel like a bit of a letdown today. These would go over better if they include them little by little along with the minifigures. I do agree with the earlier sentiments that at least it was done on a very early day. Hopefully there won’t be too many more similar reveals??

@rishi_eel:
On the contrary, if you play around with them, and combine them with other parts in the same colors, they can be quite useful. One of the guys in my LUG used the orange ones for Ghostbusters proton beams, which isn’t a perfect match for the movie effect, but it’s a heck of a lot easier to transport and set up than my version, which uses TNO lightsaber blades inside clear 1x1 round bricks, wrapped in a chain of trans-light-blue flames. Looks cool, but I could only build one, and I had to build a special LEGO box to pack it in so it doesn’t get crushed or shift around in transport.
