Anyone else remember these being used for Space Police III containment cells?
Edit: Apparently this part is an updated mold of the original element and wasn't used in any Space Police sets. I honestly can't tell a difference, but the piece used for the cells is this:

My god I was about to comment something about how I remembered as a kid that this piece was used for The containment cells that The space police used to lock up the black hole gang.
Anyways this piece is very useful and I have used it numerous times in MOCs.
Anti - juniorisationers (made up word): “anything bigger than a 2x4 brick is too juniorised for me.”
Same people when a large, transparent part is used for a Bacta tank: “I love this part, so fitting for its intended use and then some.”

That was the first thing to come to my mind!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who only sees SP III with this part
Porsche Targa rear window definitely two of the more cunning uses of this part!
@Romans122:
This version was not comes in transparent colors, where the other version comes in several opaque colors as well. It could be that there’s no structural difference, but that they needed a _slightly_ different size mold cavity to produce parts that are nominally the same size with similar clutch.
You all see SP3 but I’m over here thinking of Exploriens. I shouldn’t be, because it’s a different part, but sometimes you can’t fight nostalgia

Yeah they only made a chance on the inside the outside has the same look still.
Only had 1737 as a kid, but it had most of the fun new parts.
Yep, SP3 instantly from the image
I just think water tank for some sci do build…..
Handy for small revolving door too!
It always bugged me that the old half cylinder pieces weren't tall enough to fit a minifig. This 5 brick tall update (and the other mould variation) meant that we never had to have weird solutions like 7676 's split level bacta tank again.
@watcher21 :
Oh, they made it taller, too.
@MisterBrickster :
I actually copied a small UFO from one of the LEGO Indiana Jones games, and used the old cylinders to depict a farmer getting abducted. _Some_ minifigs absolutely can fit inside, but they do have to be posed correctly for it to work. This style cylinder was clearly designed to allow a prone minifig to fit without any issues, so it could be used as a containment pod. The 2x2 cutout allows a mounting surface for the minifig’s feet at one end, and gives a little extra clearance for the head at the other.
Also, I think I’ve built that Republic Gunship, and I don’t remember a bacta tank. Wrong set number, or did they really tuck one in there?
One of the best uses was to give the impression of a frozen shopper in the refrigerator of the Kwik-E-Mart 71016.

I think it did? The 2008 clone wars one, where there's a 4x4 dish in front of the troop compartment, I'm pretty sure that pulls out and it's a bacta tank. It's also possible I'm going senile, so maybe someone who actually owns the set should weigh in!
I like large specialized pieces like this.

No, you're right. It's in 7676 (the 2008 CW version) in the front. That indeed uses the older version with one side a stud higher than the other so a minifig can fit inside.
@Binnekamp:
Ah, that sounds familiar now. Still doesn’t make sense. “Instead of sending in a numerically superior force so you can win quickly, we’re going to stuff all the troop carriers full of medic stations so we can try to patch up those of you who do make it to the ground.”
