New LEGO Campus Architecture set being given to employees

Today is the grand opening of the People House part of the LEGO Campus in Billund, and employees there are being gifted an Architecture model of it.

Several have tweeted pictures of the 1,494-piece set 4000038 LEGO Campus, including designers James May and George Gilliatt, and another one has sent us this picture of it without a thumb in front of it.

It's the 9th Architecture-style model of a LEGO factory or campus (filed under LEGO Internal in the database) but the first to actually be branded Architecture. They are notoriously difficult to get hold of if you've not been given one, so expect this rather nice one to command ridiculous prices on the secondary market in the coming weeks.

I think it might also be the first non-18+ set to be in an 18+ style box.

Damn, I love this. Would go nice with the Lego house 21037. Aftermarket prices will probably not be worth it though. Such a shame, but a lovely gift for the employees, to keep or sell for a nice sum.

Ohhhh that's so GORGEOUS! What a lovely gift. They should do a similarly organic building in the Architecture line.

I looked at the picture before reading the news article and thought, nice but I don't need it.

Then I read that I can't have it, therefore I now want it!

Wait, is TLG going to be making an inverted version of part 70681?

Fingers crossed that window print ends up in a regular set.

It looks really neat. I don't need it, nor want it. But if it was given to me I wouldn't turn it down.

By in Singapore,

Presumably this box is the flip top design because it's a LEGO House exclusive, but it does still make 21057 look incredibly cheap being now still the only Architecture set with a traditional box.

I'm rebricking this ASAP.

Great catch on that! It seems like an awesome part to have, if true.

I'm really pleased that this set exists, but it highlights 3 things that really upset me:

1. We've only gotten 1 Architecture set this year, and it's a skyline set. So they're using their resources to make employee exclusive sets.
2. This proves that there are no issues with using a flip-top box. This makes the push-tab box on the Singapore set even more appalling. It's just infuriating.
3. They officially branded this as an Architecture set. So someone who collects all Architecture sets will now have an incomplete set or be forced to pay outrageously for this. I love that they make the campus and factory sets; and am even ok with their exclusivity. But please don't place it in the same category as other retail sets.

I agree that the number of releases in the Architecture series is rather disappointing. A couple of years ago we got two skyline sets and two landmark sets. I also think such an exclusive set should not have been released under the name "Architecture".

However, I am not sure whether the release of this particular set is the reason why we have gotten so few Architecture sets lately. The design of this set seems rather basic, and I cannot imagine that it would occupy designers like Rok Zgalin Kobe to such an extent that it would lead to fewer Architecture sets being released.

I would have loved to purchase this set, but I am not willing to pay the prices on the secondary market. I will just have to accept that this set will never be part of my collection. It is what it is.

FWIW, I've found some copies of the set where I live to have traditional tape boxes, albeit without a flip top (still far less premium, of course). These even appeared side by side with push-tab boxes on the same shelves, giving me an opportunity to choose between them. I got a push-tab box anyway, because those tend to be much more neatly packed with more pristine manuals (and sticker sheets where applicable outside of this set), for whatever reason. If you watch some of JANG's build videos you can see how he uses a knife to cut those types of boxes open cleanly without destroying them.

I like the Saturn V-technique building!

Actually came here to satirise the usual "tHey SAiD nO moRe REgiONAl eXClUSiVeS!" crowd, so I'm glad they're absent.

...but some of the other whining? Blimey, kids.

Could just be 70681 upside down using some sort of SNOT technique.

Also a great catch! There appears to be no studs inside the trans parts above the 70681s, suggesting, indeed, upsidedown SNOT.

When I first saw the title I thought there were going to be architecture sets of colleges.

By in United States,

The lack of an 18+ means that LEGO might begin to use the label less if not drop it altogether, not only does this have the same box type but it also seems like it wouldn’t interest people younger than the demographic for those sets. Aside from that, it is a cool build but I don’t have much to add since I’ll never get it.
Edit: I get that older Architecture sets used the 18+ box but haven’t they all been labeled that since the recommendation was introduced?

Being the Designer of the set I can confirm that that is indeed the case :) .. as in being 70681’s upside down :)

I can only read that as the LEGO Group are okay with employees selling their copy for massive amounts of coinage on aforementioned secondary market? Is their job not satisfactory enough?

Anyways, I do not want or need, but I do like it.

Just remember that the "Medium Stone Grey 6132207: Brick w/half bow 2x3 w/cut" is a printed piece that is supposed to represent the windows.

@iamkevinwill:
How could TLG enforce any kind of rule about what their employees do with gifts? Make them bring them to work each year to prove they still have them?
And isn't a gift yours to do with as you please?

Limited edition is an exclusive piece of a collection, just like Marina Bay Sands.

My post certainly wasn't about the enforcement of rules, and of course the owner of anything is entitled to sell whatever they want. More that it was about the idea that LEGO as a product seems to be elevating itself as some sort of rare, hard-to-find mineral, which if you want it, you must pay over the odds for.

How long before we see facebook ads claiming that "lego stores are closed so we are selling our architecture sets at 80% off!"???

Or perhaps "We are sad to announce the closing of our lego shop so get these at xx% off" scam ads?

Crossing fingers that they'll pull a "tree of creativity" on this and make a slightly redesigned LEGO House exclusive version...

One can hope, right?

Pretty certain there have been several Architecture sets that have been exclusive and that people have hardly bothered with. Also that one version of Las Vegas that snuck out and shows up very rarely. I really don't think your issue is an issue for very many people.
