I own one of those 17,425, in set 70404 King's Castle (2013). I got most of that set in a inexpensive used haul from a thrift store. I know have all 5 sets from that series complete, but haven't built them yet. Maybe this will be the year I build them!

I have this piece from king's castle (2013)

I used a few of these horizontally to serve as the deck of a pirate ship.

The previous version was a giant grille of the same dimensions, no studs. I think I prefer that one better as though this does look beefier and more realistic (bottom spikes) for a castle gate I would think it needs more clearance to operate.

Tried and failed to "NPU" this part about 4 times. So now it just sits and stares back menacingly at me from my "miscellaneous" box.

Have you ever had one of those pieces that, when you saw it, you knew immediately what set they created it for…only to find that it wasn’t even in that set at all? I thought for sure this was used as a murder weapon a long time ago, but it turns out they made an even bigger version for that set three years later, and then never reused it.

^ clever, PurpleDave! I have that set you speak of and rebuilt it last week. It’s a big monster of a piece. I used it recently as a gate for a dragon’s den. I like the idea of using it on a pirate ship.

75005 Rancor Pit indeed sad they never reused it.
Would be nice in a cave with some dragons

It makes sense that it’s in the “Fences and Ladders” category. It can be a ladder too, if you believe in yourself.

Cool! I own at least one of them, in my Star Wars Rancor Pit set in dark brown!

@B_Space_Man:
Turned sideways, the bars are still probably closed than on an actual ladder element, if only by a fraction. Straddle one of the thick bands, and it would provide partial cover against archers using arrow slits to defend against invaders (that would be you, of course).

@NotoriousJam:
Nope. We were just discussing that earlier. In 2010, they used this version in 7946 and 7947. In 2013, they used it again in 70404, but they also made made a bigger version (11216) with more open spacing for 75005, and never used that one again. The following year, they reused this version two more times for 70147 and 79117. Neither version has been seen again from 2015 to the present.

I always love it when the random part of the day is an element I've never (consciously) seen before—or owned!
