What is your favourite May the Fourth promotion?

LEGO introduced May the Fourth promotions during 2009, although the varied promotional minifigures and sets only emerged in 2011.

Twelve unique items have since been released, including minifigures, vignettes and brick-built droids. Of course, debate frequently surrounds which items have been the best, hence we are asking what is your favourite May the Fourth promotional item?

Cast your vote after the break...

Revan.

this one is easy.... the best Star wars character ever....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hands down it was Revan. The MVP of the KOTOR series and everyones favourite Sith Lord. (Sorry Darth).

Just wish they'd do a modern legends set of some kind with him.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I voted for the kitchen. Not because I like the set so much, but as a concept of a GWP. It's the best of both worlds; a exclusive minifig and a build

Gravatar
By in United States,

This year's actually - the Lars Homestead Kitchen. I love that it includes both a new (highly requested!) minifig, and an interesting build.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I chose Admiral Yularen over Darth Revan because it is a more obscure background character that only Star Wars fans would know. Plus, other than the Death Star, I don't know what other set they could be included in, so putting them in a promo polybag seems like the best option

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I voted randomly to see the results - always interested in seeing what makes people tick. Yet my vote was among the top ones (when in doubt, always select Empire Strikes Back). Never heard of Darth Revan outside of this Lego minifig - also never heard anything about him in any Star Wars movies - yet he is the most popular - go figure... must be a video games or something like that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

missed out on many of the early ones, so it's Tatooine Homestead for me

Gravatar
By in Canada,

While I love the Lars Homestead, it hits the box of an exclusive, desirable, minifigure and a solid build. It is also something that could be included in a regular retail set, or as a set on its own. Just throw that in as a sidebuild on the next Lukes Landspeeder.

As such my favourite one is Darth Revan as that's not someone they could put into a set and is someone highly desired.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

For me it's TC-14 for the Chrome Silver!

Battle of Hoth - 20th Anniversary Edition

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I was so excited for TC-14 at the time. Easy number one in my book, but I also appreciate the ideal of an exclusive minifig within a set like this year. I'd kill for an updated chrome 3PO.

By in Australia,

Huh, I always thought the chrome stormtrooper was a may 4th promotion. Well, if it was, it'd get my top spot. But since it apparently wasnt, I'll give it to Yularen, because I love him and how else were we ever going to get a Yularen minifig?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Homestead won my vote, exclusive minifig and a build to go with it. The price point was heavy though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Just because it's now expensive, doesn't mean it is the best.

Including a pic of each would have been nice.

Gravatar

Easy... R2-D2 is the only one I've ever heard of!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Went for Revan, the Prodigal knight

Gravatar
By in United States,

It may be an odd choice, but I think the 2009 promo was my favorite - it was a poster showing every Star Wars minifigure made by then, for the 10th anniversary of Lego Star Wars. It's quite nice.

Given that wasn't on the list, the Shadow ARF Trooper was the followup - I'm a sucker for black armor repaints.

Gravatar
By in Colombia,

Free marketing research survey for LEGO! Let's hope they do something with this information.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I've never understood the obsession with minifigures, and for a GWP I don't see how a single 5-piece minifigure can compare favourably with a 100-piece diorama build. Anyway, the top 3 are currently a minifigure, a scene and a combination of both, so perhaps fandom is as split as I would hope, and those who prefer minifigures are simply more vocal. An obvious answer for all future May the 4th GWPs is to use this year as a template. Then they just need to include all Star Wars sets in the x2 VIP event and it should be a roaring success.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Shadow ARF Trooper edged out Hoth Han for me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Always hoped after the release of Darth Revan we might get more KOTOR and KOTOR II characters like. Darth Sion or Malak

And here I thought people kinda hated Revan because of the whole “super cool fig that is impossible to get” thing.

I agree, I voted based on concept not choice of content. Even if you don't like the kitchen and minifigure, the idea of an exclusive location based set with an exclusive minifigure is the right idea.

While I voted for 5002123 Darth Revan, I don't want LEGO to misunderstand that my vote is based on the subject matter. Having a truly unique figure within Star Wars lore, within a build like 40531 Lars Family Homestead Kitchen, would be the ideal premium with purchase.

I would love to see Boba Fett from the Star Wars Holiday Special cartoon. Now that Disney has released the animated short on Disney+, I feel it's time that we receive him, perhaps on a microfighter scale of his animal ride?

By in United States,

I may be in the minority here, but I loved the diorama GWPs. I was able to get two of them - the Death Star II Battle and the Tatooine Homestead, and both are excellent little display models. Hoping at some point to snag the Hoth and Endor ones. The Lars Family Homestead Kitchen is on the way, and I do like the looks of it, but I still prefer the dioramas. The only other GWP I own is BB-8, which is decent, but not the greatest. As for the minifigures, I much prefer a build to exclusive minifigures, especially when most of the minifigures they've done for this aren't that interesting to me (even if they are exclusive). Darth Revan is definitely cool and I see why a lot of people prefer him. Honestly the best minifigure after Revan IMO is Aunt Beru, and she comes with a really nice build too. But I really like the look of the microscale sets and their lack of minifigures was never a big deal to me.

By in Germany,

I'm pretty sure I'm in a minority, but I personally much preferred the miniature dioramas over minifigs. I guess something like this year's kitchen set is a kind of "best of both worlds" though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really loved the R2-D2 brick built promotional set, but had to vote for Darth Revan. It was really just the coolest minifig, and it’s video game origins made it a great shout out to that portion of the fan base. I’ve never even played KOTOR, but still … REVAN!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Shadow ARF trooper was my favorite followed by Revan. My favorite minifig GWP though, is 2853590.

Edit: Love the GWP this year, but the fig is pretty cheap (Luke hair, HP face, and non-printed skirt). The only exclusive piece is the torso. If you want praise for an exclusive, put some work into it rather than generic pieces that I feel I can get out of the build-a-fig bin.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The non-minifig builds, the droids, dioramas, etc, should probably be separate sets.

Star Wars can be a very expensive theme, not only due to the infamous tax, but also the size and detail of so many minifig-scale builds. So it seems odd to me that these are locked behind a limited promotion.

Or the Ebon Hawk :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the Shadow ARF Trooper.
It’s a unique design that isn’t tied to any other media, but still fits right in with the Star Wars universe. It’s also not an important character that I wish was available in a widely released set.

This might be my personal bias, but I’m kinda wary of May the 4th promotions. I don’t have $100+ dollars to drop when it rolls around, so I don’t really get a shot at the rare minifigures. That’s not even getting into them running out!

@magmafrost:
They also used to run Star Wars Days promos later in the year. I don’t know if they all came from that source, but this list is also missing White Boba Fett, Black-Chrome Darth Vader, Rusty-Arm C-3PO, That One Astromech From Something, TC-4, Clone Trooper Lieutenant, Stormtrooper Sergeant, and everyone’s favorite, Shirtless Darth Maul. Also, there was a Flying Nun, a Dirt-trooper, and Mud-Wrastlin’ Han Solo from Disney Wars. There’s also a carded Chrometrooper that was a TRU exclusive, which only differs from the polybag version in the size of his gun, and the fact that he came assembled with a detachable magnet brick.

Not sure why 40362 didn’t make the list but it is by far my favourite mini diorama.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Had to go with Revan. Although I missed it by several years, the idea of an obscure figure with such great production value seems like a real treat. Yularen and the other polybags are slso great for the same reason.
Although Lars Family Homestead also has a unique figure AND a great little build, too, the spend threshold is too high for me to vote for it.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I know this sounds cringe, but Darth Revan.
He fetches an absurd price nowadays on the aftermarket, and he was also a great figure back when he was released.
None of the other GWP's really interest me.
I see others voting according to the concept of sets (see Lars Homestead Kitchen) but personally I don't judge sets by concepts but by the execution. The concept, I agree, is great, but there are many more scenes to be recreated in the Lars Kitchen format.

@Toa_of_Pi:
Brickset shows 40362 was a 20th Anniversary set, available in 2019 for almost three months (somewhere), from October 4 to December 31.

@DarthNox:
Shadow ARF Trooper was a nightmare for anyone who just wanted one. They added a checkbox to the checkout process. If you didn’t notice, and didn’t click it, you didn’t get one. I _almost_ missed it on my first of three purchases. Someone else from my LUG missed it on his only purchase, so he got no GWP with his order. By the time he realized what had happened, they were out of stock. On one or two more occasions, these popped up again, and every time I spotted them, I let him know right away. I _think_ he finally managed to nab one the last time they were offered. But that might have been a year or two after the original offer.

@guachi:
If you live near a LEGO Store, call and see if they still have any. The GWP offers are good through the 8th, for some odd reason.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Darth Revan may be popular and well-known within the Star Wars fandom, but when you consider the types of Star Wars characters that make it into LEGO sets, historically, those from outside the films and television shows have been very rare. Yes, it was great that we got sets from "The Old Republic" MMORPG a decade ago, but there were only four of them, if I recall. And TOR takes place a few centuries after the beloved "Knights of the Old Republic" video game that features Revan rather prominently. Seeing him as a GWP for May 4th, 2014 just blew my mind in the same way the Azure Angel Lego set from Genndy Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars" did a year later. I just didn't expect it to ever happen. Imagine if in 2004, LEGO released a Kyle Katarn minifigure as a GWP. It would've had the same effect. Heck, if LEGO released a Kyle Katarn minifigure today, I'd be pushing aside little old ladies and children to get a hold of one.

So that's why I voted for Revan, even if the Lars Kitchen is a better set overall.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I came here to vote for Revan, and I'm delighted to see him winning by so much.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The first one I got was the Hoth diorama and I thought it was brilliant. However, this years set is easily my favorite simply because you get both a build and a minifigure. I really think that Lego sets should be toys first, so while I appreciate the beauty and originality of the dioramas, to me they are incomplete as they are simply for display. As for the minifigures, it was before I really got back into Lego, but they simply don’t excite me, for the same reason I don’t buy CMF (although I may have to get the Muppets ones).

As @PurpleDave said, call your local store. I was back at mine today and they still had all of the stackable GWPs (including the Friends flower w butterfly 34147- which is pretty cool spring set (reminds me of the old free monthly minibuilds)). You might get lucky!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I put Revan because it's an awesome minifig and because I don't like microscale dioramas. However, I do agree with those who said 40531 because it does incapsulate what LEGO is all about.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The diorama with the minifig this year is the best of both options but the price to get it was very steep, so therefore not my first choice. My vote was for Hoth 20th anniversary, nice little build. Overall though I prefer the rare minifig, because the price to qualify for it is more reasonable.

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in United States,

@AustinPowers:
_Colonel_ Wullf Yularen is seen twice in Ep4, but it’s a non-speaking role. He’s one of two officers wearing white jackets seen walking past when Han and Luke (disguised as stormtroopers) escort “prisoner” Chewbacca off the turbolift. More notably, he’s one of several officers present when Tarkin informs them that the Imperial Senate has been dissolved, following the completion of the Death Star. Besides Tarkin and Vader, this group includes:

Chief of the Imperial Army, General Cassio Tagge: seen discussing the Imperial Senate as Tarkin and Vader enter the conference room, and notes that the Rebels have obtained stolen plans for the Death Star. Originally said to have perished with the rest when the station exploded, Lucasfilm archivists determined that he disappears halfway through the film, so he was reconned as being sent to investigate the base on Dantooine.

Chief of the Imperial Navy, Admiral Conan Antonio Motti: insults Vader and his “sorceries ways”, gets Force-choked in response, saved by Tarkin, dies when the station explodes.

General Moradmin Bast: brown hair, grey uniform, seen walking up to Vader after he kills Kenobi, later offers to ready Tarkin’s shuttle after reporting that a vulnerability has been identified, definitely dies when the station explodes.

General Hurst Romodi: bald guy in a grey uniform, yellow rank bar, not shown to be present when the station exploded.

General Trech Molock: brown hair, grey uniform, red rank bar, probably died on the Death Star.

Major Siward Cass: white hair, grey uniform, reports that the base on Dantooine was determined to have been abandoned for a while, probably died on the Death Star.

Colonel Wullf Yularen: white hair & mustache, white uniform jacket, formerly an Admiral in the Republic Navy (hence why people keep getting his rank wrong) who served with Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. When the Republic became the Empire, he resigned his commission and took a new position with the Imperial Security Bureau, before being put in charge of the Naval Intelligence Agency. In this capacity, he was serving on the Death Star when it exploded.

So, if you read all of those descriptions, one thing that should stand out is one thing that did stand out in the conference room scene from Ep4. Yularen’s uniform was unique. Everyone else besides Vader wore the same grey uniforms, even though they served in two different branches of the military. It would be easy to fake the rest of the officers, but Yularen and his cohort from the turbolift scene needed a new torso, so this minifig’s release was a fairly big deal at the time.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@PurpleDave: thanks for the heads up.
Problem is, while I enjoy Star Wars (and SciFi and Fantasy in general), I am only a casual viewer of the movies. Of course I know all the main characters and locations, as well as the general storyline, but all those background and secondary characters, I haven't got a clue. And honestly, as long as they aren't really relevant to the story, I don't care too much about them and their personal details.
And as for characters like Darth Revan, who aren't even in the movies, I care even less. And that is coming from someone who enjoyed Jedi Knight, KOTOR, and several other Star Wars games, going back to X-Wing versus TIE Fighter.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As someone who loves miniature versions of highly complicated machines, I have to go with 40333 Battle of Hoth. (IMO it's a better representation of the battle than any of the larger-scale versions!)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@AustinPowers:
Most of that wasn’t part of the movie. There were people wearing costumes in the room, a few had speaking roles, those characters may have actually had names (if not in the script, then in the novelization), but at least two of them were only identified as “Imperial bureaucrat” in the continuity notes from the production. This led to some uncertainty in which named officers were canon to the film, and which were names that had been created for other purposes and later assumed to have been present.

And you never played the original X-Wing or TIE Fighter games? My all-time favorite mission from any of those games was in X-Wing. You got a Y-Wing, and you had to fly past a line of containers and scan their contents. It’s a terribly boring training mission. But if you take too long (or just loiter until the timer runs down), an ISD shows up and starts dropping six TIE Interceptors at a time on your lone Y-Wing. It holds 72 of them. If you want a fun endurance challenge, wiping out an entire wing of the Empire’s top Ep6-era fighter with the slowest boat in the Rebellion, all by yourself, really tests your skills.
