From this angle it looks more like four jagged teeth.
Facetnating…
This is a great piece. Wish it came in more colors though—only four colors after this many years is kind of a drag,
As a child of the 90s, seeing bricks of this nature with even-numbered never feels right.
Fun part, love the potential for tessellation.

I actually used them like that on a "moc" when I was like 9.
Can’t have a decent castle without it!
(375 notwithstanding).
@MeisterDad:
Deluxe Basic Set? I mean, I see a horse, and what looked like a (modern) uniformed castle guard, but the Castle theme wouldn’t kick off for over a decade.
This part along with the 3x3 version has recently been used sideways (stud not on top) as stairs in the modular - the police station 10278.
was there an older space set that used these as pincers or claws of some kind?

Well, there's 6905 but there may be more, that's the only one I know of off the top of my head though, because I had that one.
TIL that the 4x4 version seems to have debuted in the 2013 Castle theme for sets 70403 Dragon Mountain and 70404 King's Castle to fit on the corners of the 10x10 octagonal plate/turntable. The 9468 Vampyre Castle and 9466 Crazy Scientist & His Monster from 2012 used the 3x3 version a stud more inset into the plate. So it seems that this is why it was made.
