Review: 76830 Zyclops Chase

Posted by ,

Limited construction techniques and elements are available for 4+ models, but 76830 Zyclops Chase defies these limitations. The threatening Zyclops captures surprising detail and appears reasonably authentic when compared with the onscreen design.

Moreover, a unique Izzy Hawthorne minifigure opposes the Zyclops, complementing her companions from 76832 XL-15 Spaceship. Despite its young intended audience, I believe this little set could prove appealing for any age group.

This review is spoiler free.

Summary

76830 Zyclops Chase, 87 pieces.

While simple, the Zyclops robot looks superb and these minifigures are appealing

  • Accurate proportions
  • Clever use of specialised elements
  • Excellent minifigures
  • Poor colour matching

Minifigures

The established Buzz Lightyear action figure, introduced in Toy Story, sports a recognisable white, lime green and purple space ranger uniform. The design has been adjusted for his new appearance, although the bulky chest armour and distinctive colours remain. The decoration on Buzz's chest armour looks particularly impressive and I love the printed arms as well.

Izzy Hawthorne also features space ranger attire in 76831 Zurg Battle, although this minifigure instead wears her Junior Zap Patrol armour. The colour combination of dark tan, dark bluish grey and sand blue, with flame yellowish orange highlights, looks brilliantly industrial and the pouches covering the torso appear perfect as well. Additionally, I like the mismatched shoulder armour colours, which separates Izzy from her allies in 76832 XL-15 Spaceship.

The double-sided head looks good and I like Izzy's hair element, originally developed for the Bumblebee Collectable Minifigure. Buzz's hair piece appears less faithful to the film, but I am pleased with his confident facial expressions. Izzy also comes equipped with a detailed helmet and both minifigures carry laser guns.

The Completed Model

Zurg commands an army of Zyclops robots, each standing considerably taller than a human. This model therefore reaches 11cm in height and looks good, accurately blending yellow and dark bluish grey colours, with red accents on the hands and feet. The proportions of the figure seem appropriate too, taking advantage of the blocky limbs common among 4+ mechs.

Articulation is inevitably limited, but does include shoulder, waist and hip joints. Unfortunately, the head is static, which is disappointing. The shape and printed monocular eye look fantastic though, while the Zyclops also includes a decorated teleportation disc, shared with 76831 Zurg Battle. This accessory connects on either side of the waist, approximating the film characters.

These legs were introduced with 71740 Jay's Electro Mech and attracted criticism, given their awkward shape. However, building bulkier feet has avoided this shaping issue and the texture on the reverse looks perfect. The inclusion of 3x4x2/3 curved elements across the torso seems effective as well, particularly when viewed from behind.

The front looks less impressive because of terrible colour matching between the yellow printing and yellow plastic. Printing grey designs on a yellow surface would surely have avoided this established issue, so I am surprised the designers elected to print yellow designs on a light bluish grey surface. Also, the inaccurate presentation of this colour in official images is very irritating.

Buzz and Izzy take cover from a Zyclops robot during a Lightyear trailer and some debris for hiding the minifigures is therefore supplied. The muted colours seem fitting and I like how the disc launcher is integrated, with some extra accessories. Even so, the minifigures and Zyclops robot inevitably overshadow this rudimentary structure.

Overall

Considering the 4+ age recommendation and associated design limitations, 76830 Zyclops Chase is surprisingly enjoyable! The robot is basic, but captures the essential features of its source material and these minifigures are welcome, particularly because Buzz retains printed arms from bigger sets and this version of Izzy Hawthorne is exclusive.

The price of £17.99, $19.99 or €19.99 feels somewhat expensive, although not dramatically so, given the presence of some large elements. More disappointing is the awful colour consistency between the decorated chest panel and surrounding parts. Nevertheless, I am pleased with this small Lightyear set, even though the biggest is undoubtedly the highlight of the range.

Wow! This just looks terrible.

Izzy’s hair is inaccurate in the placement of the balls of hair. In the movie, they were low and behind her head, not posing as Mickey Mouse ears. The Buzz hair bugs me a lot less. The mismatched shoulders are based on their movie appearances, where all three of the JZP characters wear very similar armor with wildly different shoulder armor. More than just different colors, some of the shoulder pieces have blunt spikes that are never explained, and are not consistent between the characters. The hands on the drone look terrible, as the “gun” is supposed to be integrated into them. I’m currently playing around with ways to tweak the hands to be more accurate, and May re-examine the legs at some point.

I'm not sure 'irritating' is the word I'd have picked here - 'misleading', perhaps? 'Dishonest'? Let's face it, Lego has had a major issue with colour matching on prints, stickers, and even bricks now for a long time, and misrepresenting the product on marketing photos like that just gives off knock-off product vibes. At what point does it actually become false advertising?

The printing looks terrible, and I first thought they chose that due to not wanting to make that piece in yellow. Turns out there’s a yellow one on the back (and shoulders)! Very strange.

By in United States,

Why that wasn’t a yellow piece with gray printing or stickers is a mystery to me. It’s not “Mercy’s head” terrible, but then what is?

I was at Target today. Lots of the Lightyear sets were just sitting on the shelves. However, quite a bit of the other Lego stock was empty.

And it plunged 65% from last week as well in estimates for the box office, worst fall for a Pixar film outside of Onward (and only due to Covid).

I think Robot looks cool and I like what they did with legs.
But that yellow print...

By in Germany,

I'll probably wait a while. The movie wasn't that good and bombed at the B.O., so the sets will be on clearance soon when they become "shelf lead". Was the same for the actual Toy Story sets, which were ridiculously overpriced. I'd probably be more motivated to get it if this wasn't a 4+ set with those awful large pieces.

I wonder if it’s because every Pixar film between those two was released straight to Disney+— I wonder if Disney is gonna start cutting their budget and doing that with future films even when Covid stops being as much of an issue. My parents and I went to the LEGO store yesterday and saw this set, since both of us have seen the movie my dad said “Zurrrrrrrg” while pointing to it, epic reference that people won’t understand if they haven’t seen it.

When Hasbro was talking about Haslab Unicron, they mentioned that yellow was the most difficult color to color match. Still holds true looking at this set.

By in United States,

Maybe the chest piece is yellow printing on grey because if it were grey printing on yellow, it might be confusing to 4-year-olds, with three plain yellow ones also in the set. I think a plain yellow part for the chest would look better than the terrible print.

Hello All:
I built this set last night and totally agree with:

“The front looks less impressive because of terrible colour matching between the yellow printing and yellow plastic. Why not print grey on a yellow part? Ridiculous!!!

Despite the above, I love the set. That said, I was so excited, I promptly went to build the new Zurg set last night as well, opened the box and immediately stopped when I saw that there were 14+ stickers. The 2 bags and instructions went back into the box and I won’t bother! What most annoyed me, was that they even had a sticker for the transport disc that is a printed part in the 4+ set. Are you kidding me?!? They already have the part! LEGO has gotten so darn lazy and cheap in terms of quality for what is increasingly becoming a totally overpriced product. So frustrating! Seriously, considering dropping this hobby and selling off the entire 40 year old collection (as that would keep me from buying anything from them, ever again).

Cheers!
Ron

I think the movie is just not very good. I’ve seen Targets have the merchandise already on clearance.

I was in Wal-Mart and overheard a conversation between a mother and her kid. They seemed confused as to why Buzz looked so different.

To be honest, it totally looks like dark bluish grey to me, not sand blue.
Perhaps it's the lighting.

Hilariously over on the Action figure side of things the Action Figure nerds are loving the Zurg figure as it easily mods into an X-Men Sentinel. And the XS-01 spaceship will fit a 6” GI Joe or Star Wars figure and is an easy repaint.

By in Canada,

Haven't seen the movie...nor am I going to, any more than 'Cars 3' or 'Toy Story 4' (Last Pixar movie I saw was 'Onward', which I still say I somewhat underrated...). That said:
The Zyclops robot's bottom half looks really go to use as a base for making an 'industrial walker' (well, with four or six of 'em), or even an Aliens-esqe style loader/exo-suit...

Hello All:

On further inspection, after I broke down and built the set, the following day… I made an error that I’d like to make note of.

CORRECTION: “What most annoyed me, was that they even had a sticker for the transport disc that is a printed part in the 4+ set. Are you kidding me?!? They already have the part!”

The circular sticker that I referenced is for the head of the utility robot, not the transportation disc, which is printed. Additionally, the stickers, while tedious were not as difficult to line-up as on most Star Wars sets. This is no excuse, however, for LEGO’s expanded use of stickers vs. printed parts. For example, I just opened the final Lightyear set, 76832 XL-15 Spaceship, which contains 13 stickers. Again, most, if not all of these, should have been printed for this UCS-like set that wasn’t cheap. Added to this, the instruction booklet was torn because it was crammed into the small box which contained 5 robust bags. This is the first time, I’ve received a torn booklet. This is also the first time, the box has been crammed. LEGO should have used a larger box.

Cheers!
Ron

The thing about the color matching that annoys me most is that printing the grey bits onto a yellow piece would have looked better and required no new parts. They literally just chose the worst way to execute the part in question.

By in Austria,

getting this once there's a sizeable discount, I want both minifig heads and there are a few other neat parts. Shame about the printed front thing, I was certain from the intial images that it would be printed grey on a yellow piece.

Also in the images, Buzz's hair piece looked dark brown to me..? Shame, would have been a cool recolour

I've just watched the movie two days ago, and wanted to buy this set. I came to Brickset for a review first (as I always do before I buy new sets) but there wasn't a review for this set. Just when I thought you weren't going to do a review, you did! Thanks so much!
Great review, I will definitely get this set. The exclusive Izzy variant looks great (just wish there was a new hairpiece though)

I agree with your points. Also, those inverted dish/slider pieces are usually printed if there is detail required, as stickers don't fit on those pieces and will peel.

Your point about cramped space in boxes is very valid. LEGO has a weird thing with space in boxes. Sometimes, there will be a set that has a lot of empty space on one side of the box, like my most recent purchase of 71770 Zane's Golden Dragon Jet.

Some other times, like your case, the bags will be so crammed inside along with crumpled instructions and even unbacked sticker sheets.

@Mylenium:
The movie is actually pretty good, but it’s not targeted as directly at kids. It feels like it’s directed at people who were the same age as Andy back in ‘95, and have grown up. A few backwater nations have banned it, and I’m sure there are individuals who will skip it based on one brief kiss, but I suspect a lot of the lost business is still due to Covid, combined with the fact that this isn’t Toy Story 5.

For people griping about the new voice for Buzz, I don’t remember any similar noise when Patrick Warburton became the second person to voice Buzz Lightyear for Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Here’s how I see it. Within the Toy Story world, this movie exists, Andy watched it, and asked for the Buzz toy for his birthday (this all works because this is also all canon, per Pixar and Angus MacLane). BLoSC is therefore the lower-budget animated series that was spun off the feature film (again, this) and tweaked a few things to make the show more marketable to kids. Movie got one voice actor, TV series got one who agreed to a smaller paycheck (as often happens in real Hollywood), and the toy got a third voice actor just to record a handful of lines…much like how Chris Evans is the _SEVENTH_ actor to record lines for “Buzz Lightyear”.

@brick_r:
Skip Cars 3 if you want (the plot is fairly muddy, with a conflicted message), but Toy Story 4 is challenging TS2 for my favorite film of that series. For my is hands down the funniest Pixar character of all time, and the film feels like a much more conclusive ending to the story of Buzz and Woody than simply writing out the kid who sometimes pops in to the scene. Andy was never critical to the plot of any TS film. The toys’ love of Andy is what drove the story, and they deftly transferred that relationship to Bonnie, like when Doctor Who reincarnates the previous Doctor into the next. It doesn’t end the story to any degree. It just means you’re seeing a different face.

@Ephseb:
Buzz’ hair is reddish-brown, which still isn’t a recolor. Second most common color after black, for that hairstyle. What bugs me is Buzz does come with that hairstyle in dark-brown in 76831 and 76832!

I'm only interested in Izzy because I like the amor and I'm a sucker for army builders, ever since I got the XL-15 I thought just using these minifigs to make like a cool Star Wars New Republic kind of deel.
At first i thought, I'll just keep buying these sets for Izzy, but then I realized, man I'm stupid. I'll just wait. The price on Izzy will drop with how cheap and accessible she is, and instead of spending 20 dollars on one Izzy, I can probably spend 20 dollar on like 5 Izzys depending on the price.

The arms on Buzz are exclusive. The right one in 76831 has his wrist laser emitter, while this one doesn't have that detail.

Gravatar
By in United States,

https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Zyclops

Turns out the final movie version has zero red accents on its legs. Red is limited to the outer tips of the three fingers on each hand, the laser emitter on the palm of each hand, and the single glowing eye. Feet should have a lot of grey, particularly on the toes. There do appear to be concept designs that feature a _lot_ of red accents, so maybe this was based on an earlier vision that changed before the film released. It’s too bad the Ninjago tri-handle doesn’t allow connections on both top and bottom, as that’s the only part I can think of that might make fixing the hands possible.

By in Australia,

After watching the movie, I think LEGO dropped the ball with this set. They could've released this set a little later and included an opening cockpit with Evil Buzz minifigure. I think 2 minifigures and one cat aren't exactly the best value for a set of this size.

I think you’ve got the wrong set. This is one of the Zyklops drones, of which there are dozens seen in the film, none of which have cockpits. What you’re describing sounds like 76831, which would be even more awesome with an Old Buzz minifig for sure (I got dupes of all three and planned to see if I could hollow Zurg out for just that reason).

Ah yes, my bad. Lightyear was such a boring film I fell asleep halfway through.

By in United States,

I thought it was pretty good. Not their best, and not really targeted at children the way most Pixar films are, but Buzz has always been one of my favorite Pixar characters, and it was fun to see a new take on him (as well as figure out how Buzz Lightyear of Star Command _may_ tie in to the film). The one major issue I have with it is that it feels less like a movie that Andy could have experienced in _our_1995, and more like a movie that was written for a world that had another quarter century of experience. Again, I liked the movie, and it could be worse. I’ve had people suggest to me that they should do the same thing for Woody, and I cringe a bit at the idea of trying to pass off a clearly 2022 show as being from the 50’s, or how badly a show written like it was actually from the 50’s would be received in 2022 (plus, there’s no evidence that Andy had even been aware of Woody’s Roundup). Basically, I think this establishes that Toy Story is supposed to take place in an alternate Earth rather than this one.

The other thing is, aside from a pair of possible HHG references (two uses of the number 42), all of the Easter eggs I noticed were throwbacks to Toy Story, and specifically about the toy Buzz. I didn’t notice a single instance of any traditional Pixar eggs.
