Wow!
Nabbit and Hammer Bro look like some of the best they’ve done for this series.
They cost £4.99 now and are in cardboard boxes.
Looks like I will be skipping these, too pricey now and boxes ruin them for me.
Following this trend, I guess by the time they reach series 10, they will be US$20 each. Glad I am not collecting this line. The sets are quite expensive as well. To each his/her own, glad it's good for those who like this theme. Very recognizable as always.
The price hike is a minor letdown but these figures (and their bases) do seem to be bigger on average than previous character packs, and assuming there aren't any that weren't shown, only having eight to collect (instead of ten like earlier series) will also keep it from adding too much to my Lego budget.
Finally.
I was taken quite aback at first by the inclusion of more elaborate builds such as Red Yoshi, Hammer Bro. and Purple Toad. But that price increase explains it. I think they're worth this new price.
And on that note, I am VERY pleased with the Hammer Bro. being in a Character Pack. After I first saw 71409 with a Boomerang Bro. I wondered if a Hammer Bro. would appear in some other set, and how big. Nope, he's in his own Character Pack! I am so stoked.

Yeah but they cost £5 now because they are bigger charcters and stands
Garbage
Oh wow, nearly proper minifigs with proper body parts
The yellow Yoshi looks like somebody who ate a bit too much good food and is going to 'redecorate' your dining room with the meal! ....if you get my drift.
The article has now been updated with another image from LEGO.com, showing the enlarged bases for each character.
The yellow Yoshi is the baby Yoshi design. They always look like that.
FYI, the set number link in the article is broken... points to the "-1" variant which doesn't exist in the database yet. Maybe should be 71410-11.
Cardboard boxes doesn't ruin these for me. They were nearly impossible to 'feel-out' anyway. These are pretty good. I will get them mainly because I have the other 4 waves.
This looks neat.
I would've preferred original characters over palette-swapped versions of Toad, Shy Guy, and Yoshi, but overall I'm thrilled that they're doing a 5th series. I thought for sure they were tapped out of ideas after the 4th. But the new builds here look great. The larger bases will actually help integrate them into courses better too.

The issue isn't lack of characters to adapt (the Mario series has TONS of enemies that could appear in the character packs), it's Nintendo trying to stick to the "generic" Mario enemies that are mostly from the New Super Mario Bros series, with the occasional Super Mario 3D World enemy.
Mario games outside of the core 2D series have tons of unique enemies that never appear in the 2D games (Sunshine could sustain a character pack series all by itself). And that applies even to recent games. Odyssey has tons of enemies that would work great as part of a character pack (Burbos, Sherms, Urban Stingbys, etc.) and that game only came out...
...5 YEARS AGO?!? Now even I'M starting to feel old.
Good for spare parts when they go on clearance.
10x better than the last series
@Reventon I've never seen mario figures on clearance

They don’t sell here. The whole line is on clearance at various stores. Picked up some AU$49.99 SM sets for $9 at Target.
i saw first pictures of the packaging ( like the video's ones ) in an cardboard box ? SERIOUS LEGO ? FTF ?
It being in a cardboard box saves me from looking like an lunatic in Target trying to figure out which one is which. Still hurts my wallet.
Comparing this to the last four waves, this is a nice improvement. These are definitely some fun and awesome mario characters to have. A step up from the standard mario enemies of the last lines. Also, Toady as an inclusion is interesting, since those enemies are more prominent in the yoshi's island games.
I would love to see the super mario line do another spinoff line like they did with Luigi's Mansion. Mario Party, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong, Captain Toad. They just need to go all in.
@Murdoch17:
The look on its face reminds me of something I saw this weekend. We did an outdoor show in a park, which has a few bodies of water. I was walking past the duck pond with some food, and there are these half-grown ducklings that are actually dragging their fat little bellies around on the grass while eating it as fast as they could. Seeing a bipedal animal with its legs near the back end drag itself forward is a pretty bizarre sight.

The few times I needed parts from one of these, I never had trouble identifying them.

I like a good challenge to discern characters, but I don't have THAT kind of time. I just buy the lot of ebay.
My Lego store generally has identified character polybags and boxes (Vydio) at the counter since the pandemic. They'll undoubtedly do the same for the next wave of Mario. This is especially true since the store personnel are now back wearing masks. So, maybe I'll try to grab them that way.
So I just heard about the boxes. That's really disappointing, since I only want half of the characters here or less and don't want to go through the hassle of reselling ones I don't want.
Great selection of figs. I hope i’ll get at least HammerBro and Nabbit. Still need some of the last wave but i keep getting the same figs.
Also i don’t mind the boxes at all. They are very hard to feel for anyway so maybe a nice looking box will even look cooler
Love that nabbit!
@Metroidman97 If they ever make an Odyssey ship my kids will be delighted. Same with anything from Sunshine.
Was never really into the Super Mario stuff, but I actually like the look of this series. The previous few waves felt like a dump for relatively obscure, miscellaneous creatures. The characters in this one are a lot more iconic, and the builds appear to have quite a bit more substance to them.
