Four Avatar sets revealed ahead of SDCC

Posted by ,

On the eve of this year's San Diego Comic Con, LEGO has revealed four Avatar sets:

Revealed at San Diego Comic Con, the LEGO Group is excited to invite fans of all ages to explore Pandora and the Na’vi culture with four new sets inspired by Avatar.

At LEGO CON in June, fans were treated to an exclusive look at 75574 Toruk Makto & Tree of Souls, the first set from the brand-new LEGO Avatar product range celebrating the overall franchise to-date in advance of Avatar: The Way of Water premiering this December.

Today, the LEGO Group has revealed four additional sets at San Diego Comic Con:

  • 75571 Neytiri & Thanator vs. AMP Suit Quaritch
  • 75572 Jake & Neytiri’s First Banshee Flight
  • 75573 Floating Mountains: Site 26 & RDA Samson
  • 40554 Jake Sully & his Avatar

The new sets enable fans to recreate their favourite moments from the film, as they build and reminisce about Neytiri teaching Jake how to bond with a Banshee, connecting with it and then soaring effortlessly over Pandora. And if that isn’t enough, recall the moment when the team sees the legendary Hallelujah Mountains for the first time and set up camp far away from Colonel Quaritch while exploring the details included in these new sets.

The highly anticipated assortment of LEGO Avatar products will be available at LEGO.com, in LEGO Retail Stores and available globally at all major retailers starting October 1, 2022. Jake & Neytiri’s First Banshee Flight set will be available for pre-order today at LEGO.com. (US only, I suspect)

By in United States,

That avatar brickheadz is absolutely terrifying. But the sets are a lot better looking than I’d think. Those giant legs tho...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huh.

Well anyways, can't wait for LEGO Indiana Jones to return in 2023!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Absolutely not interested!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is that a new wheelchair mold? The back looks shorter.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Something about them screams uncanny valley. It definitely isn't for me.

EDIT: it honestly looks like knock-off Lego.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Would have preferred ore sets based Avatar the air bender....

Gravatar
By in Finland,

These look pretty good. The prices look pretty good too. Hope they stay that way.

Edit, I want to rebuild that base in the set with the Samson in blue. Space base, Space base, Space base!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The floating mountains set is extremely enticing for that unprinted, neutral pair of long legs!

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

AMP set looks quite good.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The sets look alright, I'm not sure why Lego is doing Avatar, it's old and even worse, it's bad

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Not for me. I hope that LEGO makes lots of money with every franchise they license, but sometimes I really wonder about the choices they make (cough... PowerPuff girls... cough)

My sentiments exactly!

But in all honesty, I never cared much for Avatar, I am sure that the concept is cool but it's just not for me. These sets look alright and those Toy Story legs and heads seem to be growing on me for Avatar characters. More or less, good job from LEGO!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Curious they are going back to make sets for events from the previous movie. Not sure that's going to resonate with kids so many years later or as collector fodder outside hardcore Avatar fans or lego collection completionists. I guess we'll see.

Some interesting parts and color usage for the Pandora environments andsome clever builds but I don't see these being big sellers right now. I like the reversible faces for the showing the oxygen masks.

And the Avatar brickhead is little unsettling with the yellow eyes and no mouth. Like the move of putting real Sully in his wheelchair.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, they did do the mech after all. Some Bricksetters had asked previously if the mech was gonna be too militarized.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pass. The LEGO nobody ever asked for from the movie nobody actually likes and the sequels no one wanted.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

PG-13 rated movie with 9+ age range sets. I suppose it’s no different from all those dinosaur or fantasy movies and such…but somehow, this feels worse to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wish Siter 26 was a bit bigger and the helicopter was its own set, but other than that, I'm probably the only person looking forward to this theme.

That’s what I was thinking! I’m sure I’ll find uses for tall legs in dark tan. Not worth getting the whole set just for a pair of legs though.

really sad to see so much hate for these sets. the prices and the size are pretty much the only bad things about them. yes the navi look weird but thats the restriction of The LEGO mini figure.
personally these sets are a dream come true, ive always wanted to see LEGO Avatar as I love the movie. I just wish some people would hold the same sentiment. I guess if no one buys them I can get multiples on sale.

They’re doing a letter tile pack so we can recreate the end credits?!?!?!?

I like it. It’s not a masterpiece by any means but it’s still very good. And I’m pretty darn excited for the sequels all things considered. Don’t assume that just because you have no interest in it that others don’t.

As for the sets: they’re good, but not great. Some fun designs but a little clunky. Wish the Samson was bigger.

Gravatar

Are those glow in the dark carrots on the floating island in 75572 ? :-O

LEGO: *Cancels the Osprey at the last minute for being "too close to a modern military vehicle"*

Yes. The sides are taller as well.

And I love the Brickheadz wheelchair as well. Yay for representation no matter if I have no interest in the theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Overall I don't know what to make of this theme. I wasn't a huge fan of the original movie when it came out and now, 15 years later, they're finally make the sequels. Won't be surprised when both the movies and this theme flop hard.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These kinda look like they were designed in 2009 when the movie came out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not planning on getting any of these, but they look pretty cool, especially 75573. If anything, I'll buy that Trudy minifigure off of Bricklink so I can have a "Letty" to go with my Dominic Toretto once his set comes out in a couple weeks.

Nah,dude, they did modified heads for a lot of themes,so this could have been the same deal...that might have helped this theme... but really look at it: the mech is far worse than any done before 2021 (looks like those new Ninjago mechs from EVO...)...and the Samson... looks silly... movie preferences aside, these sets look rushed

Gravatar

Everyone else is excited about the long legs and here I am pumped for the flat top hair making a comeback. Early 2000s, here we come!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Honestly, not a theme I'm truly interested in, but credit where credit is due... Lego certainly has stepped up their "alien landscape" designs.

Gravatar

"Look, a Direhorse!"

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Brickheadz Avatar is going to haunt my nightmares with it's staring yellow eyes.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The set with the helicopter might be worth buying (although it will no doubt be very overpriced...)
Pass on the rest of this line I think.

Gravatar

It's Lego's knock-off of knock-off Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm actually very excited about this theme. The builds look great, and they've achieved a good mix of both the technology & natural aspects that are appealing from the original film.

Lots of naysayers on here about the franchise....but I learned long ago never to underestimate a James Cameron project.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

When I saw the title "floating mountains" I had visions of a really exciting tensegrity landscape, but was not to be :-(

Gravatar
By in United States,

Never understood the draw of Avatar (movie), and these sets don't help.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It looks like the various pieces of forest connect to each other? They all have clips on one side, and something to clip to on the other side. I wonder what they look like together, and if they connect to the tree or not.

NOBODY expects the Direhorse Inquisition! Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: overpriced sets, fading memories of a aging franchise, and an almost fanatical devotion to the Lego.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

These sets look like B grade "Elves" designs combined with "Jurassic World" sets.
They will sell well, as lots of kids will probably ask for these, so there's that.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ah so there’s a Mech in the film. That explains why Lego wanted a theme that no would really miss.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You could take wheelchair version of Jake, and replace his top hair with flesh color and Voila, Professor X!

Sets are alright. I would imagine Avatar fans and kids would especially like them. Seems like a good amount of playability with them.

I was hoping somebody would do that in response to my comment. You are awesome!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I 'like' how the cheapest set in the theme (as far as we know) is apparently 40 dollar. Will they really do the Monkie Kid 2020 route of straight up forgoing pocket money sets again? AGAIN?
I genuinely like that they did the mech! I like mechs!
I 'like' that the mech is built with the the Ninjago EVO joint system. That is, it doesn't have mid-limb joints and is pretty small. And it also has a 'wonderful' amount of small 1x1 parts again. That sure won't get tiresome to rebuild after a few times!

The price of those two Banshees surprised me. I have to give credit that they keep surprising me with the height of those prices. Then again the generous terrain build might be half of the pieces...

So yeah... these are once again not for me.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I love all of them except Brickheadz. This alien foliage is stunning, I like that "lab", even those flying "dragons" look good and I don't like such builds usually. If I had the money I would get all of them (except brickheadz)

That mech needs to be in diesel-punk / ALT-WW2 display, or have "electric" coils added to it for Telsa-Punk.... STAT

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Okay, I like Avatar. If you can stop booing please, here’s my thoughts on this reveal:
- I am actually starting to see the actor’s faces (or, well, the cgi’d ones at least) in those weird heads! It’s actually starting to grow on me. Good on them.
- The Thanator’s been done dirty. I really like the molded head but it does NOT look right on that body at all. Gonna be MOCs galore with it though. It’s definitely a great dark blue parts pack, I’ll give it that.
- The AMP suit looks good! Little off on the hands and maybe the cockpit and I’m not sure how accurate it is, but it looks recognisable and nice. Hold up, they used the pre-bent knees and it doesn’t look bad? Kudos! I’m getting this, if not for the builds then definitely for that PPP. Also sand blue parts pack.
- The banshees look AWFUL but I like the molded heads. Parts pack anyone?
- adding this in later because I just noticed their builds seem to be IDENTICAL. Not even the details are different. Come on, that’s just crap design.
- 75573; oh boy where do I even start. This is more than I’d hoped for with these sets. Though for that price point the builds should’ve been bigger. Okay, and the Samson isn’t ideal, but it gets the job done. I’m absolutely getting this. On sale.
-

I’m surprised too that these are all based on the first film, but I don’t mind. Even though I wasn’t expecting them to go this route my predictions/wanted list for this theme is completely checked off now! Literally every item/scene I imagined could have a chance at being made are now official. Too bad the designs are just not great. I know they can do much better; it feels cheap and/or rushed. Now I’m hoping for a tree of souls D2C that I won’t have money for.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really don't see these moving. I know Disney is trying to turn this into a franchise but the original movie was little more than a novelty that doesn't really seem to have an enduring fandom.

Useful pieces for space jungle MOCs, I guess? Otherwise I'm getting PRINCE OF PERSIA and THE LONE RANGER vibes from these - except those sets were *way* more interesting.

That's a rhombus-shaped pendant you're seeing. In the closeups it's much clearer.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The blue Brickhead is so funny... Hilarious! Other than that... who called for this IP to be made into sets? Sorry Lego, you are way too late to the party. And I am not sure anyone wanted sequel movies either...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

We're getting Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez in the same year? Never thought it would happen!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I've wanted the AMP suit and the helicopter thing for years. I remember making mocs of them back in the day

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I quite like how each of the scenery sections allow you to display other parts of the set. Doesn't make those pieces feel quite so wasted for us folk that like to build and display.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Seems like good, colorful toys.

The mech set seems cheap compared to the Site 23 set. Hmm

The Brickheadz eyes terrify me

Gravatar
By in United States,

It will be interesting to see how well these do (to the limited extent we can tell - based on how long the sets are available and not discounted, I guess). The movie is super old (by today's standards), and obviously not overwhelmingly "well loved". But new movies will be coming out soon (or maybe "soon"), and anyone can see the first one any time they want, what with streaming on demand these days. And I know it's probably a small subset of people, but perhaps the presence of an Avatar "world" at Disney World will help sales also. I know I and my family have just a little more fondness for the first movie after having ridden one of the Avatar rides in the past few years.

My own LEGO purchases are dwindling (generally), with price increases at the same time as general inflation, and I'm not sure these would fit into my buying / building "scheme" / "ambitions" anyway. But I like them all (aside from the Brickheadz set), so we'll see.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Strange that they didn't include the gun with the AMP unit. It looks a bit like an upscaled modern military gun but it is still fictional.

The cockpit print on the Samson does not nearly cover enough of the piece so is disapointing.

Gravatar

@LEGOldHead80s said:

Why are the users on this site always so smug and dismissive?

Gravatar
By in United States,

These sets look pretty good! Only the cheapest set interests me, but they look nice. I love the minifig(not Navi) designs! The mask prints could be incredibly useful. I'm looking forward to more useful tall leg colors. Now we just need arms... I wonder if the amount of recolors has affected the price? I know all of the molds have. Hopefully these sets will go the way of Eternals and be half off/heavily discounted since I also need to make room in the budget for the Indy Egyptian tomb set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Brickheadz don't look great, but everything else is what I was hoping for from Avatar sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I mean this is the same exact thing LEGO did with Indiana Jones in 2008 and will do again next year, and Lord of the Rings in 2012, right? Making sets for a movie or three that they didn't have the license to before because there's another one coming out?

I suspect that the Avatar: The Way of Water sets that come out after that movie are going to be rather better received.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

The plants look nice. Maybe a botanicals set of them would be nicer?

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I love the film that I watch often and willingly and I can't wait to see the sequel, I have always loved legos, but what a disappointment. with all due respect but you could do much better with the sets produced !! even with only the minifigures !!!

These will make great sets for a SW Felucia diorama.

Edit: man I hope LEGO makes sets based upon Mass Effect.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’ve been wanting a LEGO Samson for sooooo long. Definitely getting that one.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I liked the movie (it entertained me for a few hours and this is what I ask of movies - never been a hard core fan of any movies/series/bands/objects/etc). I would normally be interested in getting a few of these sets (we have yet to see the biggest set of this theme - which is a military vehicle (Scorpion or Valkyrie I can't remember - but it's 'fantasy' so that does not count!) but Lego has overpriced me out of buying them. I can now only focus on a few preferred themes (which are already quite expensive). Before I was somehow able to buy a set here and there in other themes just for 'exploration' and discovering other stuff - this won't be possible with the price hikes announced and this might very well be a blessing in disguise.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So these sets look good overall, but a few thoughts from an amused filthy casual:

1. I need the mech set simply because the original scene was so laughably absurd and insane. It'd be like getting a Lego set of the rooftop from The Room, or the scene in The Happening where Mark Wahlberg negotiates with a house plant. I still crack up every time I see an angry old man in a comically-designed mech with a literal mech-sized knife trying to fight an alien tiger, it's just ... you know what, this set is perfect, take my money you gloriously perfect plastic peddlers.

2. The fact that I can't remember a single name of a single character without looking at the boxes is a telling sign of the true impact of the Avatar movie. I don't need to see a Star Wars set character list to figure out which one is Luke Skywalker, but I completely forgot that the guy in the wheelchair was named Jake, and I had to remind myself that they didn't make a minifigure of Sigourney Weaver, they made one of Dr. Augustine.

3. These are gorgeous-looking sets with intriguing and appealing alien elements and minifigs amidst relatively boring human elements and minifigs. In short, Lego's designer team seems to have made the perfect licensed theme in that it perfectly represents the license being portrayed. Just like ... (quickly checks name on box front) ... Colonel Quaritch's cliche and by-the-numbers ... (quickly checks IMDb) ... bad guy speech.

4. What kind of blood sacrifice do I have to make to get the Jake Brickheadz to stop staring directly into the depths of my blackened soul.

5. No seriously, I'll do anything.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't get all the hate. Avatar was okay, there's a new film that develops the franchise releasing imminently, so there's relevance for this.
These sets look broadly pretty good fun. Fantasy creatures are always good play value, and these look very swooshable.
Tbh anything that can be added to our store of creative options is a good thing in my book.
YMMV.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow is this the first brickheadz with a wheelchair. Nice!

Gravatar
By in United States,

75571 is 44.99 USD and 75573 is 99.99 USD on the US LEGO site.

Unrelated, the beta for Minifigure Factory is live there too.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Not only doesn't the theme interest me, the sets as such are dull apart from some interesting colours.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m just bummed they didn’t use the longer Toy Story legs for last year’s Toy Story 4 sets but then decide to dust off the molds for this franchise. Maybe more will come in future sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

These are alright.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Never saw the movie, but the scenery and animals (both molded and brickbuilt) really entice me. They may be bad value for money but they certainly are beautiful. At the very least these will be great parts packs for Botanical MOCs--which pushes my buttons, if not anyone else's!

And with Toy Story in 2010, and Cars the following year. And with Star Wars way back in 1999, for that matter. It’s not at all uncommon for LEGO (or other toy companies, for that matter), upon commencing a new licensed theme based on an entertainment franchise that’s been around a while and had entries before they got the license, to do sets based on past entries in addition to the new ones (and, frequently, to begin with a launch wave for the theme made up entirely of products from the older movies or whatever before a wave based principally or entirely on the latest one).

By in United States,

Hey, neat! While this isn't a franchise I gravitate towards, there's a lot of strong worldbuilding in place to make for some cool Lego sets.

75571 seems like a relatively good price (even at the $45 correction), considering it's a licensed set, had a good piece count, an animal head mold, and with a lot of crazy colorful elements in the flora. Might pick it up even!

Now to leave the comments before anyone tells me I'm objectively wrong, the movie is garbage, the set is garbage, I've been brainwashed, "but all the parts are small", etc. Drop the positivity and run!

This is part 11289. It appeared in 45 sets. the most recent ones were in 10751 (2018, in trans-light blue) and 76097 (2018, in trans-brown). It also appeared in pretty much every single (non-Technic) helicopter since its creation in 2013.

Note: 75573 has a sand-blue train door! That should be a good colour for a passenger wagon.

I would also love that, at the very least, I would love the Ideas set of Appa with all the main characters to be made, but I wouldn't complain if there was a line of sets, even if the theme was short lived

However, with that being said though, and this is coming from someone who has never seen the first movie, though with the second movie coming out, I very well might have to in order to understand the lore and why the first movie was so successful (I hear that a part of it has to do with the CGI used). Anyways, back to my main point, even as someone who has never seen the movie, the sets look very interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of the mech set, which is ironic, since I typically love mechs, but maybe I'll come around on it over time and after seeing reviews. The set with the birds is one I feel that my partner would love, and I'm quite interested in the base set with the helicopter and the horse. Additionally, the set that was revealed a few weeks to a month ago seems very interesting as well. Some of the pieces they use are quite aesthetic and beautiful. I'm willing to dive in and see what this theme offers and who knows, maybe these sets might help me become more excited to see both the first movie and its sequel

You are correct. My mistake: the part I was referring to is the cockpit part of the AMP suit. My bad.

@HuskyDynamics:
The Osprey is a literal military vehicle. It’s flown by the US Marine Corps, the US Navy, the US Air Force, and the Japanese Self-Defense Force. All militaries. It _can_ be flown unarmed for Search-and-Rescue operations, but you can also mount a heavy machine gun in the rear to lay down suppressive fire when coming in for troop evac.

The color scheme is based on real livery, but I believe it was only used by the preceding model from before one of the partner companies dropped out. If a substantial number were being flown by a civilian organization, or at least some Coast Guard service (falls somewhere between military and police, but they’ve done tons of CG subthemes over the years, so it’s probably fine), they might have let it go forward. As it is, it was based on a vehicle that’s only used by militaries and has at least one hard point for mounting a weapon, and it carried official licensed branding.

@mr_Fikou:
The Thanator definitely needs a helicopter with its name on the side, and like a double-ended sledgehammer thing.

@lost_scotsman:
Looks like a Speed Champions car roof.

@Renaissance_Ravensly:
It was a massive CGI spectacle at a time when that sort of thing was still the new hotness. It’s kinda like how Wing Commander was a theatrical hit based, in large part, on the fact that they co-opted the “bullet-time” process from the original Matrix film at a time when most people hadn’t had an opportunity to see that effect on the big screen. But how many people even consciously remember that there was a Wing Commander film, much less know the story beats in order because they’ve watched it so often?

It seems less and less likely by the second, unfortunately. :( I'm not enough of an Avatar fan to get any of these but they're accurate sets from a film that has been around for long enough that there's certainly some interest left. My brother and this one guy at my school are giant fans of the film and while the latter doesn't buy LEGO someone is gonna want these. The mech is easily my favorite of the Minifig-scale ones (not sure how to rank the Brickheadz alongside them) and it goes well with Site 26, bam you have the whole climactic showdown, not counting the prior war scene. I don't have much to add to the "is this a military line?" argument but this is a fictional film either way, although if the Samson helicopter was a real model that'd pique my interest even more, like the Chinook in the Taskmaster Helicopter set.

I have no special connection to the movie. I have seen it and even bought the BluRay when it was dirt cheap. I neither hate nor love the film, but I can appreciate it at least from a visual standpoint.

I agree. The piece count to price of 75571 is great. But, the mech and cat need a lot better sculpting. Looks stiff, blocky, and anorexic. Looks like a contestant from the Lego challenge show that you know is going to lose.

I like the colors and the scenery builds. I appreciate the new molds and am starting to get used to the long legs. But, most the animal sculpts don't impress too much. Maybe I need to see them IRL. Why no landing gear (feet, hands) for the banshees?! ><

But, usually poor pictures are used to hide poor design. They should've put the Ninjago design dudes on this IP.

By in Spain,

I love Avatar. I only have two problems with these sets:
- No gun for the mech. Maybe it was too violent? I don't think so, it has a chainsaw and a knife...
- The rotors on the Samson look bad. Why those yellow accents if that part is available in grey... and probably would have looked better with a single rotor on each wing

Apart from that, pretty excited for more sets

75571 AMP Suit Quaritch: Its legs uses the bent-joint POOPs introduced for the juniorized Ninjago mechs. The fingers are silly, like a fat-gloved Mickey Mouse. New color for the barista plate (sand green).

75571 and 75572: The purpose-molded heads of the ikran and thanator should be no surprise, after Ninjago and Elves. Interesting that they minimized use of Mixels joints and their intrusive grey, but the Technic frame for Jake's blue ikran uses axle-joiners in white instead of blue or black. New color for the 1x1 brick with bar (earth blue).

75573 Site 26: That's a nicely compact rendition of the transportable lab, and the "more images" show they did manage to squeeze in a link-chamber -- albeit with a flat lid instead of curved, and a faux scanner torus.

40554: The BrickHeadz version of Avatar!Jake: new yellow eye-print! Squeezing a tall-skinny character into the BrickHeadz form factor is odd (what next: Alberto Giacometti sculptures?) but it's hardly the first ill-fitting case. The *names* on the box are a bit odd (set name: "Jake Sully & his Avatar," as "Jake 180" and "Jake Sully 181").

We'd all like them to make the joints in more colors, but they're simply not going to, supposedly due to the color and plastic formula dictating that one color is best for consistent quality. We need to just accept that they have a rule and aren't changing it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Frankly, the brick-built creatures all look terrible. The AMP suit is good, but the Thanator mixes flat round blocks with obvious clips and hinges and a sculpted head that (a) doesn't look much like the original and (b) doesn't remotely match the style of the body. The body is all built out of cookie-cutter 2D pieces spliced together rather than the designer creating a 3D shape.

The base and the Samson look good, and I like how it's got the warpaint colouring marks on it, but it just looks too small to me. It's all very well LEGO selectively miniaturising vehicles, but where they've made the brick-built creatures bigger and also put it next to the base (which it's supposed to be able to carry) it looks totally out of proportion. Give us a mid-range Technic version, please.

@Venunder:
@8BrickMario:
The Mixel joints are some of the most color-locked elements they have ever produced. The ball dates back several decades, but the socket was a new design. The design is such that the plate functions as a normal plate, and the socket fills a space that’s one brick wide and two plates tall (but vertically offset by half a plate thickness). There’s very little room to reinforce the socket within the allotted space. Clutch is a major issue with a socket joint that small, and if you cheat the tolerance too much, you risk cracking open the socket.

Changing the color of a part can affect how much it shrinks when it cools, and how stress-resistant the material is (reddish-brown and dark-red are infamous for being prone to shattering, and the middle run of Bionicle had a few colors that were notorious for cracking). In order to ensure the parts had adequate clutch without risk of breaking the sockets, they tested the crap out of two colors and restricted use of the socket-inclusive molds to those colors. Oddly, there are socket parts in both shades of bley, but they locked each part to one shade only, based on whether it had a ball attached. One exception was made when Disney objected to the used of a single light-bley Mixel joint in the Giant Man design, so they temporarily produced that part in dark-bley. As soon as that set was retired, the color lock was back in force, but a few set designers took advantage of the lapse while they could.

The animals look really good, especially the space horse (I don't know its name, please feel free to enlighten me), but I cant see past the goofy extended minifigure pieces. To me they look a bit like fake or knockoff brands. The builds for the animals, on the other hand, look amazing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m really surprised these are kids sets and not part of the 18+ range. Not only is this movie older than the kids these sets are designed for, but as I recall this movie is completely inappropriate for children. Of course it’s been years since I’ve seen it, and my only real interest in it now is to see how well the cgi has held up. I remember it being amazing when it came out, but I’m guessing it’ll probably look like the Star Wars prequels now.

The good news of course is that if they can create a theme for a movie this old because there’s a sequel coming out, then maybe they will revisit Lord of the Rings prior to the new tv show coming out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@alfred_the_buttler:
The LotR/Hobbit movies were produced by WB-owned New Line Cinema, and reportedly Christopher Tolkien was not happy with the latter trilogy and refused to expand their licensing to include anything outside those four books. Amazon secured the license for The Silmarillion, which is the basis for the streaming series. TLG licensed their themes from WB, so they’d need to cut a deal with Amazon to be able to make sets based on the show. That doesn’t affect their current license, so it is true that they could simply choose to piggyback on the show by producing more sets under their WB license (assuming it’s still active). I wouldn’t expect to see them do this until they’ve had a chance to gauge the success of the show, and decide if it’s something they want to be even tangentially associated with. If it’s ultra-violent, they may be even less inclined to revive the theme than they would have been when there was nothing going on with the IP.

The only bit I can ever remember from this film was the mech fight (oh yeah and the uhm... hair scene. Not Brickset appropriate.) The set with the mech seems decently cheap so I might actually go after it.

I think it speaks volumes that this collection is only four sets and has already covered basically everything from the film.

@GSR_MataNui:
There was a fifth set that leaked, got posted, and then deleted. I suspect it’s based on the new movie, or they probably would have announced it with these four. Most likely Disney signed an exclusive press contract, and some major news outlet/publication gets first crack at revealing all movie merchandise. This has happened quite a bit with licensed themes based on upcoming movies, and regular draws cries of, “Why is a non-LEGO media company getting to make all the LEGO announcements when AFOL sites get nothing?”

By in Austria,

i'd say, from the following standpoints, this series is looking quite promising in my opinion:

the playability: each set comes with it's own deco reflecting the ambience, and with the main action set this is fun to play with and to combine with other sets

the design: the colors, objects, animals, minifutures, structures, are quite true to the movie itself which is already a work of art at that time, here the sets shown are very vibrant in colors, simple yet configurable designs, as how lego should be

the price: nothing to comment about, this is always subjective, as long as the product itself is worthy

the brickheadz: i would put the jake's avatar on my office desk, and when someone comes with silly questions or demands, i will show them the jake's avatar
