Buildable 2 x 2 Red Brick

©2022 LEGO Group

If you head down to your local brand store in the USA today you might be able to build a model of a 2x2 red brick.

You'll also be able to do so on the 10th and 11th of August in the USA and on the 23rd, 30th July and 7th August in the UK. If you can't make those dates you can have a go at building one from your own pieces using the instructions you'll find in our database.

Find out more about the events at LEGO.com: UK | USA.

Thanks to Fuddruckus for the news and scans.

I've put the 10tu down on my calendar then

By in Singapore,

Perhaps the slot is a place to put a LEGO catalogue or VIP card (do they still have physical VIP cards?)

By in Germany,

The 1949/1950 version had a slot, see BrickLink "bslot02".

Great factoid- I was going "I think I actually have a brick with that slot". Pretty sure there is a grey 2x2...

Anyway, I'm in Nashville so I think I'll go by and try to get one. I appreciate these types of builds; simple yet stunning.

But why is the first word *Free in the write up, Huw? Is this a GWP set or is it being sold?

Are these available only in certain regions?

Yes, I still have a working, physical VIP card.

The brick specialist at our store said the slot was for use as a bank.

A bank? I don't get it.

By in Denmark,

I would assume it's an ABB (Automatic Binding Brick), the first bricks from 1949, they were slotted. It certainly looks like one, it would be weird if it wasn't!

Curious choice, to be honest, but I love it. Too bad there are no LBSs, here!

Didn't they have slots on two sides? This has only one.

Maybe you can use it as a piggy bank/money box ?

without something to cite, but I've read the slot was used to slot in a window glass between two columns of these, in a time where no special-purpose window frame parts existed.

I went to my local store for this yesterday and they wouldn't let me do it. Said it's for ages 14 and under.

They were single and double slotted

So you can just come in, build it and take it home or do you need to buy something?

By in United States,

Wife and I did it yesterday here in the states and we are well over 14 :) . Asked the employee and they gave each of us a container with the parts and instructions. They had quite a few set up. Quick easy build that you do in the store. Don't know if you had the buy something but we bought a few small ones anyway.

I also still have a physical card, however, I was told that going forward there will be no more physical cards. So when my card wears out (and it shows a lot of wear!), I will have to convert to a digital card.

Lego has to get people to save up for those price increases somehow! ;-)

By in United States,

The first LEGO bricks were the 2x2 and 2x4 slotted bricks. Some 2x2’s had a slot on one side from what I saw in some old photos while most had slots on both ends.
Windows and Doors with wings slotted into the slots in the ends of the bricks.

@Huw The dates in the original post (and the link) are different to those shown when I went though the page of a UK store. Maybe that link is for US stores only?

To gain VIP points, you don’t currently even need a digital card (such as any kind of download to a device), just a VIP account. As long as you know the email address you used to become a VIP, store staff can find your membership.

By in Netherlands,

That's basically a Kiddicraft brick, not LEGO's own design.

By in United States,

I would have preferred knowing this two days ago but since there's another round in August I'll plan to go then. The model actually looks nice with the base under the brick. And free is my favorite price!

Yes, you're right. I've changed the text. Thanks.

By in United States,

I built one yesterday. It’s a fun, quick little bill. Entirely hollow on the inside. My understanding is it was based on an original version of the break. But you could use it as a piggy bank.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I can see long queues to get the free Lego, as limited stock should really just give to children's hospitals, special needs school, kids charities etc!

From the Lego House tour the slot was to allow some expansion when slotting together to provide the tension to hold the hollow pieces together before the underneath tube was patented. However, the bricks eventually split, see photo of bslot01a on bricklink. This also allowed the use of cardboard walls etc., which continued in Duplo into the 1980s.

My store ran out of 1x2 plates, so only ran this promo for the first of the 2 days.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hey, official LEGO Store employee here. I can confirm this is to celebrate the heritage of the Automatic Binding Brick, which did indeed have a slot on one side, as mentioned by some other users too!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just built mine at the Lego store in Charlotte! A great experience for me - thank you, Eric!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I went to my local LEGO store yesterday and got this, the slot on the side of the brick is so that it can be used as a coin bank. I most likely won’t be using it for a coin bank so I just used a red 1x4 plate to fill the gap.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Got this yesterday on my way to vacation. We left late so we’d pass a Lego Store at 11:00, when they opened!

They gave us the set to take with us instead of building in-store.

(they also still had the HP GWPs)

By in United States,

Anyone who got this, what does the packaging look like? Is it just a plain clear plastic bag? Does it have any label on it? Or is it in a box ? Thanks!

That makes sense, since the slotted version was how the original LEGO Automatic Binding Brick was designed.

Clear plastic bag. Printed instructions, no set number.

In my case, the Lego store guy had all the part types (hundreds of each) in large plastic trays and then he filled a little tupperware-style container with the required parts (he clearly memorized the part list). Once the build was done, I handed the empty container back to the supply.

By in United States,

Whew! They had several left when I got off work, and were nearly out for the first round by the time I arrived. Saves me having to take time off for the August run, at least, and I’ve got all three of this style brick (red 2x4, teal 2x4, slotted red 2x2).

@LegoRadDad:
I asked at my store if they knew what the slot was for, and they said they didn’t (even most AFOLs probably wouldn’t know, so I would have been shocked if they did). Nobody told them, so they also guessed “bank”.

@darthnorman:
Like the brick it’s based on, the inside is completely hollow (too early for tube, remember?), and the slot doesn’t have a back wall. There’s five plates of vertical clearance under the top layer of the brick, so any coin that’s 5/8” or less in diameter, and no thicker than a tile could actually fit through the slot. Once it’s inside, there’s not much room, so it won’t take many coins before they start blocking any further attempts to insert coins.

@merman:
It’s a “make and take” model, so they make you build it in the store, but you get to take it (and the instructions sheet) with you, no purchase required.

@PluffTed:
Mine was stuffed into a clear ziploc-style bag, maybe 3”x5”.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I didn't know it was free??? I saw the parts and instructions on a table next to the PAB wall and I thought it was just a suggestion of what you could build if you bought the parts in a cup! I even made a purchase and no one told me! :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

@anitrain:
You’ve got a second chance coming up August 10-11, when they’ll repeat this even in the US. If you still miss out, @Huw posted scans of the instructions, and it doesn’t appear to use anything that’s super rare. The worst is probably a pair of 1x1x1-2/3 bricks w/ 2 studs on one side that are used to mount the parts that form the slot. The rest is very basic bricks, plates, and tiles.

My store stopped the promotion at noon. I was able to sweet talk my way into getting one held for me even though I wasn't coming by until 3. Nice freebie.

By in Canada,

I built one yesterday at my local LEGO store in Toronto. They were running the session at 5pm despite being open at 10am. They had the parts in small yellow paper bags and the instructions were just on the side. I built mine on the spot to make sure they did not miss any parts in my bag. The employee there said they had maybe 50 sets per day.
