A very useful part indeed.
So Bricklink refers to this generation of clip as the “Open ‘O’”. That term feels a bit clunky, and I just don’t “C” why they chose it.
The squared-off U shaped ones never break for me. These split a lot, especially with the kids.
One of my favorite parts.
I don't know if I'm in a minority here, but these parts don't break for me, whereas their predecessors often did. I wonder why!
Is there an Up Left Holder?

I think it was mainly brown that was a problem. I've had a few broken baby reindeer antlers!
These don't break for me, but neither did the old ones. These look really nice though!

Maybe it’s not directions, this is just a very moral and upright brick

Can't say I've had this happen, other than reddish-brown or pearl-gold, which break frequently.
Once someone pointed out that these are different from the squared-off ones, I could never again return to Plato's Cave.
Seems I own these in every color available. Might well be a first for a part coming in several different colors.
At first I didn't see the point of this piece as the holder was always on the side of the plate to hold tools etc., but then it appeared in so many sets of buildings like Tower Bridge, Brick Bank, Santa's workshop and lots of micro builds that surprised not needed sooner.

I just grabbed a bunch of these in sand green from the PaB wall. I was sorting them, and of course, dropped several. I stepped on a couple and they were still right as rain. I've never had the splitting problem.
@Harmonious_Building:
Bricklink recognizes three shapes (one of which I’ve never seen aside from the photos posted to the listing), and at least two more styles that they don’t include in their catalog. They look like the very rare notched variety, but without the notch. One has smooth sides, and the other has horizontal ridges on the sides of the fingers.
Ooh, just realized, really short skeleton legs.
I hate these parts. Almost impossible to get straight and the sprue marks are ugly. And I always seem to put them in at 90° to where they should be.

You are not alone. I’ve not yet had any of these crack as they seem much better engineered. But I’ve had many (not just brown) of the old style crack and split, and not even with illegal usage, either.
