Where's Oscar the Grouch when you need him?!? His home just made RPOTD!

Well, it's not the original trash can but it's not like *I* can tell them apart at a glance. Classic piece that I have far more than I need now, but still like to see, because it reminds me of 6494 Mystic Mountain Time Lab, for a long time the only set I had with them.

Does that technically make Mystic Mountain the sole trash disposal site of my early LEGO collection?

Delighted to see bins for the first time back in 1987 with 6693. Were there ever any brick-built examples in sets before then?

RPOTD got a bit trashy today....

@Formendacil: Well, at least they had a trash can, and didn't do any trans-temporal littering. And I know what you mean about only having one. My Lego city only had the one in 6380 for a long time.

I got a minifigure head stuck in one of these and after a few years it is still in there.

I got a used lot that had a minifigure helmet--one of the cool, printed ones from the World Racers theme--stuck in a trash can. I ended up drilling a hole in the anti-stud on the bottom and pushing it out with a nail. I figured that the trashcan would still be usable, since how often would I look directly down into it, and that I had plenty of them.

Have you tried using a blow drier?

So THAT’S where you put the dust when you clean your LEGO!

And all this time, I thought I was the only person who had ever done that.

By in United States,

So I have to decide how I want to represent rock salt in one of these, and have a guy dragging it down the sidewalk.

Eh, he's probably warming up his throat for an epic version of "I Love Trash"...or he's shopping for a new can; possible that Light Blue or Coral ones...ok, maybe not that the latter one...:)

@PurpleDave:
So...I take it you'll have (young) Mr. McCallister "running into" him...and reacting accordingly (just realized: you can do a 'good' approximation of the 'Kevin shocked look' with a minifigure...)

As for myself: I like this piece, it and the 'lamppost' piece are so good for greebling a street scene.

Happened to me too, same problem, same solution.

@brick_r:
So, we’ve displayed at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for their Holiday concert for over a decade, excluding the year they went on strike to take a bigger pay cut than they were trying to avoid, and the two pandemic years. Starting maybe around 2015, they began playing the music from Home Alone while projecting the film on a huge screen behind the orchestra, and it sells out every year. I got two copies of the set, built one, and raided the other for parts. I built a snowy base that the set will nest into, so it’ll fit into our club layouts. I also built two free-standing towers that nestle against the sides of the house to add the missing wings. Next, I want to build the garage…which is going to be more difficult than I expected (the film shows _one_ view of most of the front, I found one other photo that shows half of a man door to the right of the two cars, and 3D satellite view shows the entire back yard has been consumed by an addition that includes a new sideways-facing garage and a longer driveway where the original garage was located). When we get invited back, I plan to stage it with Kevin sledding out the front door before the concert starts, confronting the two burglars with his BB gun during intermission, and reuniting with his mom after the concert ends. If I don’t use the rock salt on the day of the Home Alone concert, I can always set that up for the holiday concerts that follow.

BTW, there’s a tan cable knit sweater that I planned to use for Kevin’s “white” day (he wears white on the day he goes sledding, red the day he spends defending, and green the final day). I discovered that you can get the exact same dual-sided pattern printed tan on a white torso from the Minifig Factory, and therefore it is technically an official torso design, so I grabbed one of those to use with the sled instead.

Besides the garage (and the back ends of two cars), I still have to figure out the green bathrobe for the final day, I may eventually try to add some trees (currently the gargantuan tree directly in front of the house would block the entire house from view), and the van will absolutely have to be redesigned.

As a kid, I got a small tire stuck in one of these, it's probably still there to this day.

I feel like, on the original version, the tabs to hold the lid in place were just a single wide one per side, whereas this part's picture shows two narrower tabs on each side instead. Not sure what the advantage to that change is, though.

For myself, I first got two of these in 6564 Recycle Truck; then a few months later were followed up with two more from my own copy of the Mystic Mountain. I thought they were fantastic pieces as a kid, especially the way they were actually functional for putting small parts in them.

Like real trash cans the lid always disappears when I go to fill it!

Just got back from going a one-day display, where one of the other members was selling minifigs and accessories. I told him about this discussion, then picked up the lone trash can in his part bins and showed him the white helmet that was lodged inside. I even tried smacking it on a table in an attempt to reverse-Heimlich that sucker, and it would not budge. I think there’s enough clearance by the visor divots to hook it with a very thin wire, but that’s no guarantee the wire doesn’t just snap off. Yeah, you could drill a hole, but then if you put anything wet inside, it’s just going to ooze all over your kitchen floor.

@ThatBionicleGuy:
Two tabs hood the lid at 180°, so it’s possible to push the lid out sideways. Four holding it at closer to 90° will have a more secure connection. Unless one of those tabs breaks off, in which case it’ll have even worse hood because the tabs at 180° will be narrower and cover less of an arc.
