LEGO has published a short video on YouTube, teasing an imminent announcement about the popular Friends theme, that celebrated its tenth anniversary this year.

The video presents eight silhouetted characters and more information about them will probably emerge shortly.

It’s nice to see Friends is still going strong considering the idea of minidolls was mocked heartily when they first came out. I wish they would expand the concept again, Elves and DC Super Hero Girls we’re pretty great.

It's finally the sequel to the Friends PC game! Duke Nukem Forever? Haha!

Beyond Good and Evil 2 has sadly taken Duke Nukem’s crown as the game that’s taken the longest to make!

It is a $1000 set to celebrate the 10th anniversary

Friends is already ten years old?!? Man that’s kind blowing! My daughter never cared for them. I bought her some, but from an early age she said she liked the colors and builds, but not the mini dolls. She prefers (still) regular minifigs.

Thankfully there are other ways to get her favorite colors.

Now I will have a problem on my hands if they decide to release a proper modular building for the Friends theme ;-)

Stop all the teasing!

@CCC I doubt they'd do that, some people would complain.

Friends is actually a pretty good theme. Obviously I don't like the colours but lots of the sets have been excellent, and the ideas are way above City. It's a real shame City doesn't have sets the same level of complexity and interesting ideas as Friends.
Personally I wish Lego had never made minidolls, that way these great sets would be compatible with other Lego sets.
I also think the 'girl colours' (if you want to call them that) are rather overdone at times. Like the new Friends theatre, great set, but it really didn't need teal bricks on the outside or pink seats for girls (or anyone else for that matter) to like it.

the three girls from CLIKITS are joining the Friends!

hey i can dream, right?

Friends consistently has more City themed sets than City itself. The food fair, theatre, arcade and art school have all been added to my collection this year, and are easily compatible with minifigs at roughly the same scale.

Long May Friends continue!

Friends is a theme that has aged very well in my opinion. Set designs have changed from basically City, but pink to what City sets should be. The pink/purple/teal color scheme has also been toned down to where those sets don't look out of place in a City. City set designs took a step backward when the new road plate system was introduced some months back, but Friends didn't have that problem.

Not a big fan of mini-dolls, but I do like that it's given us female minifig hats/helmets with hair.

Can’t wait to see what’s next for friends!

Looks like a new group of 'friends' in the teaser?
Are we going to see an expansion of the main cast?

Gravatar

Two new main friends?

By in United States,

There's rumors that LEGO's going to reboot the theme (again, as it happened a few years ago with some of the characters getting redesigned and I think the plot that tie-in stuff uses being reset/adjusted, not sure on the fine details), so this could be what the teaser is hinting at.

the fun fact is that it would be one reboot more than what BIONICLE got and what Ninjago's presumably getting.

I hope it's some new Elves sets...

This dark and ominous teaser seems quite off-brand for Friends.

Non-binary friends. To promote LQBTQ+ inclusivity. About time we had some non-binary figures.

I just want elves back please I am begging crying weeping

This looks suspiciously similar to one of the posters for Cuties…
@morvit I’d be down for that but “LQBTQ+” isn’t how you spell it. On this topic, the Queer Eye set gave us Jonathan Van Ness, Mixels was a whole theme of non-binary characters (according to the wiki, anyways), and DCEU Barry Allen is played by Ezra Miller (not the best example but still).

@collectormom:
Everything about the theme would have been successful with young girls, even if they'd stuck with minifigs instead of spawning minidolls. The issue seems to be that young girls aren't the ones who are buying Friends sets to play with. It's their mothers and grandmothers who buy the sets for them, and (in the US at least) there's a two-generation gap in FFOLs that started right around the time minifigs were introduced. Minidolls appeal to women who grew up playing with dolls like Barbie, and who view All Things Minifig as being exclusively the domain of boys.

If you pay attention when new waves of CMFs are launched, young girls are fine with minifigs. They just overwhelmingly prefer to get girl minifigs, which still tend to be rare in many themes. City has gotten better, and (aside from certain licensed themes) CMF has basically achieved gender parity at this point, but DC, Marvel, Star Wars, and even Ninjago and Monkie Kid are heavily weighted in favor of male characters.

@snazzybricks928:
LEGO Frenemies! Sorry, watching this week's Stargirl right now...

Taking a quick peek at the teaser in closeup, four of the characters are outlined in teal, and four in purple. You can sorta make out their facial features, plus the shape of the silhouette says quite a bit. I think the teal outlines are the four main characters. Of the purple outlines, three have short hair, and one has long hair, so I'm thinking three boys and a girl will be introduced. Whether they're love interests, siblings, or just an expansion to the four core characters remains to be seen.

@morvit won't happen, they have to sell the sets in China.

Nah,

You're thinking of the Magic the Gathering $1000 4 booster pack set for their 30th.

Have you ever seen any complaining around here?

Looks like new characters but what I really want to see would be a Heart Lake City Train. Please LEGO give us a Friends themed Train or Monorail. Please Please Please!!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I agree that a return of Elves would be enthusiastically welcomed. But that’s not on the table here. That’s a whole different theme. As I understand it, this is specifically about Friends, not all minidoll themes.

I honestly think the friends line is actually the strongest Lego produce. Good looking, playable sets and always a reasonable price. Add on healthy discounts and they are a winner. Picked up the Art school for £33!

That's phase three. Phase two is "Friends Kill".
