Marvel Advent Calendar - Day 1

Posted by ,

LEGO launched the first Marvel Advent Calendar last year, which was remarkably fun, despite the relatively loose association between Marvel and Christmas.

76231 Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar provides far greater potential, taking inspiration from the new Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+, which presents impressive material to recreate for an Advent Calendar!

Hopefully we get off to a good start...

The packaging for this Advent Calendar is surprisingly bland. I think this design represents The Collector's museum, as the colourful doors resemble his countless display cases as they appear in What If...?, with their contents obscured through tinted glass. The concept is good, but I would have preferred a more vibrant space scene for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Appropriately, the calendar begins with the leader of the Guardians, Star-Lord. This minifigure includes the same torso as the equivalent figure from 76193 The Guardians' Ship, featuring an accurate communicator badge on his lapel. Unfortunately, the dual-moulded legs from the prior minifigure are omitted.

The hair component has also been updated. While I thought the medium nougat Superman hair used before was effective, Peter Quill's hair is rather messy in the Holiday Special, so this piece is probably more fitting. The double-sided head looks good too, as it was originally designed for Owen Grady from Jurassic World, another of Chris Pratt's characters.

Peter rarely appears without his quad blasters, although their pearl silver colour is unusual, with only two previous uses. The brick-built boot thrusters are completely unique though. Pearl gold roller skates work quite well here, although their size is distracting. Ideally, they would simply be printed on the side of each leg.

Overall - The omission of dual-moulded legs is disappointing and Quill's jet boots are huge, but this is a nice minifigure to start the Advent Calendar.

I like big boots and I can not lie!

I agree, some leg printing would have been nice, but the rocket boots being brick built is a decent compromise that adds play features in that other figs can wear them.

Who?

Marvel Advent Calender?
That's a funny way to spell 'Jurassic World'...
Owen Grady is naturally the first inclusion! At least Owen has a weird beardless sci-fi Santa costume with mini reindeer on the sides of his legs?

Oh I get it!

It's called Marvel because the Jurassic World calender apparently also has an obsession with giving every other minifig unprinted legs for some reason. Oh, cheeky you!

Even though it is Lego, I can see the likeness of Chris Pratt on the face.

I think sometimes we forget that these Advent Calendars go beyond festiveness and double as inexpensive parts packs. I'm grateful that the Star Wars calendars from years ago got us an inexpensive Scout Trooper outside of the massive DTC Ewok Village, for example.

Not all of us could drop money on the fairly large Infinity Saga Guardians Ship last year, so I appreciate Peter and the other figures coming in cheaper here.

cheap way to get the stalord fig. definitely a great start to the calendar.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow, didn't expect a Mario crossover for this calendar! ;P

If this was an HPAC, the jets would be painted on the sides of the legs. You know it’s true.

By in Brazil,

Still lacks his iconic mask. The mold exists but very few Starlord figures include it. Meh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, I got a sleigh instead of StarLord. There are piece mix ups, but I am worried that it means I will be msissing pieces. DO you think that's the case or do you think it will be fine.

To be fair [minor spoiler ahead], Peter's Star-Lord mask doesn't show up in the Holiday Special at all, so its exclusion is understandable from that standpoint.

Your tray is probably in the box upside-down. This seems to happen to at least one Bricksetter every year. Open the box, flip the tray around, return. This probably solves the problem.

REALLY??? THANK YOU SO MUCH! what do I do though? wouldn't it mean that I would get day 24 first instead of 1?

By in United States,

how would you fix it? What do you mean it's upside down like how do I fix it and wouldn't it be backwards if my tray is upside down

No, I mean, your box is probably already upside-down. OK. Literally, put the advent calendar on a table. Open one of the side flaps. Pull the tray out. Rotate the tray 180 degrees. Put it back in.

Literally, your tray is in the wrong position, so all the pockets are sorted inverse of how you want them. It's very likely that if you spin your tray, you'll find Star Lord in the Day 1 hole.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@CapnRex101 Not sure if it's the case across the board, but I noticed my advent calendar has a cardboard tray opposite to the foam trays of recent years. I think that's a definite improvement in terms of waste and worth mentioning.

WIll it spoil who is in the rest of the days? and will I see all of the figures and rotate till starlord is in that slot?

I would suggest simply not looking while you rotate the tray 180 degrees. It only fits inside the box in two ways, so rotating the tray should solve the problem, as @ResIpsaLoquitur described.

By in United States,

Yeah, just don't look too closely at the bags. They should all be jumbled enough that you're not going to understand the contents without really looking at them.

Frankly, you've already seen 75% of the builds on the box cover.

True lol, so just rotate it to where I see starlord? but I will have minus one day because of the sleigh

We had a cardboard tray in the HPAC last year. I used it as a seed tray

@felixoftheeagle:
No, there’s a consistent pattern to which door you open on which day. The 01 door is always second from the bottom on the far left, and 23 is always second from the top on the far right. Rotate the tray 180°, and these days will flip. A ride for “Santa” is pretty common for Day 23 of many LEGO Advent Calendars.

@CapnRex101:
Well, four ways, but the other two make it very difficult to reach the goodies.

Thanks. Had the same problem. Rotated the tray 180 degrees and the correct content was then in no 1

so it worked? Did you get a sleigh in your number 1 instead of starlord

Cut on the sides. The side panels of the box should be sealed with tape. Just open it like it's a normal Lego box. Pull out tray, spin, put back. Star Lord SHOULD be in the right window. Put the sled back if you don't want a day with a hole.

It's also possible you have a set with a duplicate bag (not good) or bags just plain in the wrong order. But 99% of the time, your tray is just spun 180 degrees off.

Yes I did. Content from no 23

Gravatar
By in United States,

Notice that box 1 and box 23 are in opposite locations on the box. If you could spin the panels 180 degrees, box 23 would be in box 1's spot.

In other words: your internal tray is reversed. Open the box and spin the tray. If Star Lord appears in your open window, you did it correctly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

ResIpsaLoquitur do you have the calender? could u try it and see if it works

Gravatar
By in United States,

(Opens calendar)

1 is Star-Lord. 23 is a green and white sled. If I spun the box around, they'd flip.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah I see, do you think I should put the sleigh back in or keep it out

Gravatar
By in United States,

I got no opinion. It's Day 23 and you might be busy enough with last-minute holiday stuff that you won't miss a day.

I have to go out of town for the weekend, so I'm opening Days 2-4 tomorrow because I won't be home Saturday and Sunday. There's no wrong way to do this.

Smart! DO. you know the pattern of all of the figures and will u still be able to chat tomorrow?

BUt you think the rest of the days will be normal and on the right things

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm driving for most of tomorrow. If you want spoilers, there's a plethora of YouTube review videos out there where they open every window in the box. (Again, I already know all the contents. The Brickset page for the set shows everything.)

do you like the Star lord hair piece, or do you think it should have been the hazel superman one

Gravatar

No opinion on the hair. Also, recommend against spoiling additional windows to the other readers here. It's not hard to figure out all the contents, but some people here genuinely want to be surprised at each day.

I did it! It works! Got starlord!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I saved up enough money for this year's Star Wars calendar and was looking forward to getting some of the minifigures, but at the last minute my girlfriend told me at the store that she wasn't that interested in Star Wars, and that we should get Guardians of the Galaxy.

So here we are.

I like that we got a minifigure for the first day, and not some random side build to kick things off. Looking forward to the sweatered minifigures which my girlfriend and I will be splitting between ourselves.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Great review as always Cap! However, where are the scores? I really look forward to the banter between fans and agreeing / disagreeing with you on point (forgive the pun). Please consider including scores out of 5 as you are reviewing multiple Advent calendars, cheers!

Hmm, I got the wrong day 1 too but was what should have been day 7 (without spoilers). Not just a simple rotation for me. Just hoping my Starlord turns up another day. Day 2 was correct so may have duplicate
