Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 2

Posted by ,

I think 75340 Star Wars Advent Calendar began in impressive form yesterday, with an appealing Republic Gunship, improving upon designs from previous calendars.

Another vehicle of comparable quality would be welcome today...

75309 Republic Gunship introduced an updated Clone Trooper Commander in 2021 and that minifigure returns here, fittingly. This design looks excellent and incudes flame yellowish orange arms, with matching highlights on the torso and helmet. Additionally, I like the decorated legs on modern Clone Trooper minifigures.

However, the same minifigure already appeared in 40558 Clone Trooper Command Station, so its further repetition is perhaps disappointing. After all, a quick colour swap would have provided another rank and required minimal changes to the figure, as shown in the Star Wars range from 2013.

Thankfully though, this minifigure is equipped with a blaster pistol, unlike those from 75307 Star Wars Advent Calendar last year. Hopefully the always-tedious weapons racks can therefore be avoided this year.

Overall - Another rank would have been perfect, but the Clone Trooper Commander remains a good minifigure.

By in Netherlands,

We now have more Phase I clone commanders than phase I clones in the last few years, I believe.
I mean, it's nice of them to include a figure like this! But ehm... this almost feels like it directly addresses the reception of the figures in the UCS set, which they've since addressed by 'doing what the fans want' and adding exclusive variants in 18+ sets for the sake of exclusivity. Like this says: sorry for not being exclusive enough. Here, have this now common figure again!

That said, I'm probably looking too much into this. It's good that this appears outside of a literal UCS and one elusive foil pack few stores ever have in stock.

So what probably would have made more sense is for 40558 to include the basic trooper from this unit, and the calendar come with _one_ guy to lead them. I think CMF had the same problem with Roman Centurions (common) and Legionnaires (rare).

Considering how seldom 40558 is in stock, I'm okay with the lieutenant being in the advent calendar.

AND... that there's a strictly-enforced forever household limit of 5.

By in Denmark,

I somewhat still feel that Clone Commanders are fully qualified to fly gunships ... of any size! ;)

PS: death to weapons racks!

PPS: says the designer!

By in Ireland,

I don't collect prequel sets, so I welcome this addition to my minifigure collection.

A clone trooper walks into a pub and asks the barman, “Hey, have you seen my brother?”

“I dunno,” says the barman, “What does he look like?”

I've never seen them in my local store... and I visit at least once a week!

My day 2 bag was a second day 18 bag. No clone trooper in my advent calendar. Lego is replacing it fortunately.

I saw them in my local store ONCE, when they first came out, and I said 'oh, I'll pick them up when they inevitably go onsale.'

People have gone crazazy for this one.
