LEGO to celebrate 100 years of Disney

Posted by ,

LEGO has announced its involvement in Disney's centenary celebrations. The press release follows:

The LEGO Group to celebrate 100 years of Disney by sharing the playful wonder of LEGO Disney

As Disney marks its 100th anniversary in 2023, the LEGO Group will join the celebrations by inviting families to share the wonder of storytelling, imagination, and creative play that LEGO Disney has inspired over the last 24 years.

Using the ultimate creative medium of the LEGO brick, the two long-standing partners will honour fan-favourite Disney moments, capture the magic of exciting new Disney stories, and bring friends and families together to dream, build and create with magical new LEGO Disney products and play experiences unveiled throughout 2023.

"Since we launched our first LEGO DUPLO Winnie the Pooh range in 1999, LEGO Disney has inspired joyful play for Disney and LEGO fans of all ages. From voyages across high seas and valiant quests, to the mesmerising magic of Disney Princess castles, LEGO Disney has enchanted families around the world by bringing fantasy to life and inspiring new adventures using the LEGO brick." Commented Casper Rafn Voigt, Head of Product for LEGO Disney at the LEGO Group, "We’re honoured to be collaborating with Disney to celebrate this momentous occasion as we continue to create magic and unforgettable storytelling experiences together."

From this press release and the recent unveiling of 40622 Disney 100th Celebration, I think it would be reasonable to assume we will see many more sets celebrating Disney's centenary this year.

What are you hoping to see from LEGO? Let us know in the comments.

By in Australia,

Finally we will get the Rescuers Down Under set we have all been waiting for!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I think that we'll either get another Disneyland Castle or maybe a larger Disney Style Haunted Mansion like 40521. Other thoughts I had were a modular style Downtown Disney, or something to do with Epcot

Gravatar
By in United States,

hoping and praying for a tinkerbell reprint or or remake since the castle retired!

"[...]will honour fan-favourite Disney moments[...]" - does this mean my idea on the last post of little vignette sets based on iconic movies (and maybe even some more obscure movies too) is actually happening? If so, I'm actually excited!

...far less excited if it's just going to be one big set consisting of many different scenes - I'd much prefer a lot of small sets so I can pick and chose which ones I buy, since I don't appreciate all Disney properties equally. But still, I can keep hoping for multiple small sets, at least ^^

By in United Kingdom,

Got to be Herbie - The Love Bug!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I hope they will make the Snow-white and seven dwarfs? Or is this door closed forever?

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

mirabel madrigal minifigures i hope so

And it will cost $600!

Gravatar

I think there will be another Disney CMF series

Gravatar
By in United States,

Woo-hoo! Finally my dream of a Big Ben tower made to-scale with GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE minifigures will come true!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I think they will make more plush toys and Disney branded blanket as gwp with 500$ threshold.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Also, I may be wrong, but I feel like the minifigure arm with the wand, pictured in the teaser image, is probably the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella. (Her wand doesn't have the star in the movie, but that piece was most likely used to represent a magic effect.) So I'd imagine it's pretty likely that she's going to be showing up in minifigure form within the range, if nothing else.

...which again would work well with the idea of vignette-style sets, since the Cinderella dress transformation sequence is for sure one of the most well-known pieces of animation the company has made. I'd imagine a set like that to maybe have two minifigure versions of Cinderella too - one in her torn rags, the other in her ball gown - with a play feature similar to the table in 7251 Darth Vader transformation which rotates to replace one version of her with the other.

Again, just guessing. But it seems to me like that would make sense, at least.

For the sake of completeness how about a Pocahontas.

By in Netherlands,

I would kill for a Duck Tales-set. And considering what a loveletter to the original series the reboot turned out to be, I'd be more than happy if that hypothetical LEGO-set were also based on the reboot.

Della Duck is a -mood-, man.

"I wouldn't mind a Cat from Outer Space set or Flight of the Navigator. Cool Runnings would be cool."

It is my adamant belief that between Goose in 76127 and Sox in 76832, TLG and Disney stealth-rereleased the 'Cat from Outer Space' not once, but twice, and nobody took notice.

And I would absolutely love a John Candy minifig.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Can't wait for a set that shows off all of Disney's recent acquisitions for a mere 999,-
That's pretty much what I expect from current Lego + current Disney + celebration

More realistically it will be 600,- actually. The superfans will gobble it up too!

By in Canada,

Meh. I've spent the last 10 years of LEGO purchases diligently avoiding anything to do with the Disney Empire (except I could not resist Winnie the Pooh). I am sure I will be able to resist this. No interest.

Hoping for smaller (and more attainable/affordable!) vignettes/dioramas as opposed to $300+ sets. The Disney-specific IP is so broad that a singular focus/build/set is not really feasible.

Gravatar
By in United States,

- the Ulysses submarine from "Atlantis the Lost Empire"
- Recognizer from the original "TRON"
- the steamboat wreck / hideout from "The Rescuers"
- Cruella De Ville's car (maybe with option 'battle damage'?) from "101 Dalmatians"
- more "Winnie the Pooh" (WE NEED KANGA AND ROO!)
- The Sword in the Stone from "The Sword in The Stone"
- Mr. Toad and his early 1900's motorcar from "Ichabod and Mr. Toad"

...need I go on?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Any princess/female heroine in minifig form, please. Still no Cinderella for her castle!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

they will never make minifigures of important characters again in any meaningful capacity. Only way to get a somewhat classic looking Mickey Mouse is a CMF that was only available for a few months, nearly 5 years ago. This and many other similarly obvious things should be mainstay items.

I guess it depends how important UP is to you. We are supposed to get the UP house later this year for $55 or $60(likely microscale). Aside from sets for the anniversary, I agree though. Hopefully with good sales, they will consider putting Minifigures in certain Disney sets.

By in Puerto Rico,

Sets from Atlantis.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

We are also missing Pocahontas, Mulan, Moana, Snow White(I think?), and Belle. It's quite the number, but hopefully they will fill in a few holes. I assume they are going to continue doing figures in pairs. It would also be cool to see minifigs from Encanto like Mirabel.

Come on, give us some Goofy Movie sets!

Gravatar

What I hope for is that companies will stop with these idiotic press release teasers, just show the products or keep silent.

Gravatar

I am hoping for a Snow White minifig in the third Disney CMF series. I think that will happen:)

Up, Coco, Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Emperor's New Groove

@AddictedToStyrene:
You spelled “Darkwing Duck, plus the final DVD box set, including the full “banned” episode, and all the Darkwing-related episodes from the Ducktales reboot series” wrong.

@ThatBionicleGuy:
There’s a slight possibility HP wands would work for starless magic wands.

@RaiderOfTheLostBrick:
Ah…yeah, sure, why not? I’m sure they’ll get right on that.

@gylman:
FYI, while the set is clearly based on the Disney animation, they don’t own the IP, nor do they own the full film rights. There’s non-Disney stuff out there, and that’s not even getting into public domain stuff like Blood & Honey.

@PhantomBricks:
2023 wave 2, so May 1st.

@CCC:
I’ll be shocked if they don’t release a Sorceror’s Apprentice Mickey Mouse.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pretty sure we're going to get a set based on the Anaheim Disneyland castle this year. At least I hope since I skipped on the WDW Disney castle set in hopes for the OG one

Gravatar
By in Germany,

One set, not even from the material that made their name. It's one step removed from saying "we are getting enough Disney items, haven't you seen the Star Wars and Marvel sets from the Disney theme?"

Mickey as a fireman and similar absurd jobs that make the figures way too specific to be able to be used as a stand-in for a generic Mickey don't count.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’d like to see a full set of minifigs from the original TRON and a buildable MCP.

The Black Hole would be cool, as would The Flight of the Navigator, Treasure Planet, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Barring any of those, I’d settle for a minifig of Figment to perch on my PC.

The bare skin on the arm suggests it's Tinker Bell, not the Fairy Godmother.

Since LEGO seems to love putting out $400+ sets now, I was trying to think of something large and iconic that might be a flagship for the 100th anniversary celebration. Monorail and Epcot both came to mind. But both of those are WDW and would seemingly have been a better fit for the 50th anniversary celebration in 2022 rather than an overall Disney centennial.

For that reason, I think Disneyland castle is more likely to be the choice.

I remembered that the minidoll Fairy Godmother had bare arms https://brickset.com/minifigs/dp040, which I guess is why I made the connection to her; especially if the minifigure version uses the same cape and hood pieces. On the other hand, Tinker Bell would also make sense, like you say ^^

By in United States,

Although it would never happen, I would like to see minifgures or builds revolving around some of the animators at Walt Disney Studios, such as Ub Iwerks and Art Babbitt. I know a Walt Disney minifigure would sell like crazy, but I'd love to see some of the animators and the animation process get representation.

Can't wait for a set of Disney firing their own CEO Bob Chapek in the middle of the night during a weekend concert, then insisting that they're doing fine financially and that they've never been better! I'd sell my "never better" Disney shares for beeeeg money to buy such a monument to the corporate memery that defines Michael Rodent and the Big Mouse Co. Here's to 100 years!

There's so many cool Disney properties they could do, especially older ones like Mary Poppins or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Herbie would be awesome!
Disney's Atlantis sets would be great too.
One thing I would really like to see is a minifig of Walt Disney himself!

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

I hope we get a Kingdom Hearts set as part of this...

A bit off topic but can we discuss how someone in charge of making that teaser image felt the need to add an outline to that wand? The outline looks really misaligned at some parts and I cannot unsee it now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There will be one set released. It is a buildable ticket to enter Disney World, and it comes with a collection of numbers, so you can increase the ticket price when you rebuild it.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang isn't Disney though. It was made by the same guy who did early James Bond films (Albert Broccoli) as it was an Ian Fleming book first. It LOOKS like a Disney film, but it's not.

I'd like a KH-set, but I very much doubt we'll get that in the inventory before hell freezes over, or before Squeenix stops pushing for NFTs. Right now, I don't trust them to make sound financial decisions even if their entire catalogue and reputation depends on it.

Sorry to say that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a UA/MGM property - as it was written by Ian Fleming and not a Disney film.

However... Mary Poppins, I like the sound of that.
Just not the awful travesty that was Mary Poppins Returns. *Insert gagging sound*

Does Disney own the merchandising rights to Mary Poppins, or did they just buy the film rights?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would love to see some diorama sets similar to the ones they launched for Star Wars last year. Trench Run, Trash Compactor, and Degobah hut were all bangers. Small sets with high-detail and good minifigs would work well for countless Disney properties.
