I'd say the original gears take that cake... like the ones in set 801 which don't mesh well* with anything that came after!

*Pun intended.

still better than Twilight.

Together with four 2x2 gears 35442 this worked really well in the Yule ball dance of 75948: Hogwarts Clock Tower, and brings gearing to a younger audience.

Agreed. They're not as useful as the standard technic gears, but they're large and simple to use, and don't hurt small fingers as much.

Plus splat.

@Quinnly: On the contrary, they're quite useful for functions like the one in 40564.

They're not generally all that useful, but I did once find an extremely satisfying use for them in a mechanical calculator of mine, in which its ten knobby teeth worked perfectly for a stepper in base 10, and its lack of axle hole and presence of studs worked perfectly for building a custom differential housing on it.
It was really a Eureka moment for me!

I think they are great as they are only plate high and dont need technic.
Kids also love them and I wish Lego did a classic set with them!

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

Not only they have studs and work well without technic pieces, they also have a unique property that @jkbrickworks showed- two of them in conjunction align perfectly after full rotation. The normal technic gears do not align after full rotation of two of the same gears.

@Lordofdragonss: There is a Classic set with them, 11019. The helicopter in that set always amused me, because the rotor-turning mechanism requires it to remain ground-bound to function.
