LEGO teases an imminent The Lord of the Rings announcement!
Posted by CapnRex101,
The return of LEGO The Lord of the Rings was well-received in January, although BrickHeadz alone do not represent the actual potential of this theme.
Fortunately, LEGO has published a short teaser video on Twitter, likely heralding an imminent announcement which relates to The Lord of the Rings!
Take a closer look into the One Ring's reflection below...
Keep an eye on Brickset for more information over the coming days. You can read our reviews of the three The Lord of the Rings BrickHeadz, while awaiting more news following the teaser.

My precious!
Well it looks jolly nice but there's no way I'll ever be able to afford it, so meh. I'm sure it will look lovely in a display case in The LEGO shops.
Well it’s about time. People have been talking about this for weeks, if not months. We’ve even seen some pictures of the actual set, although the set in the reflection looks better.
I'm scared about prices...
One does not simply make a LEGO set of Rivendell. (One makes a D2C exclusive!)
That's really interesting as it looks like it doesn't quite match the Rivendell that was leaked the other day. Was already excited but even more excited to see what the final set looks like now!
Looks great... can't wait for it!
I don't like this trend of making less minifig scale sets for themes. Either a fan is supposed to buy a giant package of far more than 300$ or the theme only has a handful of sets. The first Avatar movie only having 4 and each of the beloved Indiana Jones films only getting one measly set is plain wrong. It comes out to be merely an acknowledgment of nostalgia than a real triumph. I would argue sales data from themes that are about 15 years old by now also don't reflect the adult-centric toy industry of recent times as articles have shown lately.
It would definitely work better if these huge sets were more around 100-250$ pricepoints. The last few years went overboard with the over 300$ price range and while it's necessary for some models like the AT-AT, it is definitely not necessary for many of the offered models like Hogwarts Express or Creator. Lego fans would like to buy a Titanic but wouldn't a 150$ Titanic be vastly more useful for gaining new customers?
Yesssssss! I already knew about this from a leak, but I can't wait to see it.
For those wondering about the price... it should be $500 USD with around 6100 pieces. That is unconfirmed but from what I've heard it seems pretty legit. If this is true it would be expensive but at least not overpriced.
Also, I read that it should have 14 minifigs. My wallet just started crying.
"The (Lord of the) Ring (theme) cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Gloin, by any craft that LEGO here possess"
Its sprit endured
I have all the LOTR/Hobbit sets they released.
Whatever this is, that cannot change.
If I was ever going to cop a £500+ set, a big Rivendell would probably be the one, but I'm still not sure I can justify it. Please give us cheaper Lord of the Rings sets Lego!!
If its $500 plus... my need to pay bills will unfortunately win out. 250, 300 however... doable.
Hopefully the rumored Baradur will be sub 300. That's the one I really want (if the leaks are true).

Getting this.. and retire for the year. That is the hope.
I'm glad to see that the hobbits will have dual-molded legs. I always felt like that was lacking especially since they had them in the Lego video game. This one looks like Bilbo judging from the front pockets.
Needs more dwarves
I'm tentatively excited ... but let's be honest, the Brickheadz were a letdown. Here's hoping this announcement flips the script.

You know what the big fat word "preliminary" means on the days old picture?
I am happy to see they changed the layout and increased the tree, this is so much better.

A big, greedy, international company pretending to be small, family-led business?
i cant wait for the Riverdale set
Look out, Frodo (or Bilbo; they all look the same from the knees down)! You’re about to stub your toe!
@Murdoch17:
They already made a Rivendell set, and 79006 was nothing close to a D2C set.
I haven't even gotten the Lion Knight's Castle due to the price, not sure how I'm going to handle this. Much as I love Lego, I may have to put a hard limit on my spending per year. I do love how well they are doing at making great sets, but life ain't cheap these days...
I don't know much about LOTR but that set reflection actually looks good... might have to...
Not too concerned about the set one way or another (I'm not nearly as into LotR today as I was back in middle school when I'd recently read the books and the movies first started coming out), but this is a fun and creative way to tease a new set!
My guess is that it’s an 18+ set depicting the council of Elrond scene from the Fellowship of the Ring. Even if I’m wrong, I want it
As usual, I'll download the instructions and build some elements of the set with the pieces I already own.
How can they still make chrome rings? I thought they had phased out all those parts.

Massive overstock? You get 2 in the Frodo/Gollum Brickheadz set.
Will be nice to see some actual official photos!
Looking at past teasers from Lego the average is 1-3 days later for the announcement (roughly). Patience is a virtue. I’ve heard. Theoretically.
The Council of Elrond?
It is frustrating that when an exciting theme or set is teased, it ends up being a really expensive set. I know Lego still makes lots of smaller sets, but it definitely doesn’t feel like it.
So what are we thinking, GWP for orders over $3500?

They replied to a comment on Instagram saying that tomorrow would be a very exciting day so it seems the reveal will be tomorrow.
I want a €20 gandalf vs. Balrog set with minifigs!
So if we get a Rivendell, can we also get a Minas Tirith?
Please.
So incredibly excited for the triumphant return of this theme!!
Rivendell is a great choice, but I hope we ultimately get the Minas Tirith set that fans have been clamoring for ever since the first theme retired.

Same here! I do hope LOTR returns as a regular theme, but my wallet isn't so sure. 10237 The Tower of Orthanc is still the most expensive set I've ever bought; looks like that's about to change!
When I read the headline I was so excited. When I started reading the article I started to feel deflated. I love LEGO…I really do. There’s so much on my Wanted List I haven’t been able to pick up because of how hard I’ve been hit by the past couple of years. This set possibly being another high priced addition is…it’s tough to swallow.
I’m not knocking LEGO. This is my problem not theirs. Still…it’s a forum so I’ve venting my frustration. I’m sure the set will be gorgeous.

There are loads of sets recently that have chrome rings - sometimes as a spacer...

Each of the extant Indiana Jones movies has had at least two sets already, and word is more are due soon. Granted, there’s still far more that can be done with the franchise and surely still will be after this year is over (in particular, the TV series that by sheer, raw quantity of material makes up the overwhelming majority of the franchise is still wholly unrepresented in official sets), but with sixteen boxed retail sets plus extended line, Brickmaster, and convention exclusive stuff from the 2008-2009 line alone, the Indiana Jones theme has a lot more than just a single set per movie.
Glad I sold all of my LOTR and Hobbit sets before the remakes start coming in.
Looks like it will be 500$us/670$cad
I’ll guess it’s about $2999.99 USD plus a few non - vital organs.
Rivendell is supposed to be 6k bricks but it looks fairly small at leaked pictures, yet costs 500€. Seems to have a lot of figs too.
The other set is Sauron's tower.
I need many more brick built trees in Lego sets!
Wow, even in the reflection, and even if it is more of a facade with the courtyard and tree, that looks outstanding. It is very hard to decide what big ticket sets to get though because they are just getting way, way too good.
It'll probably be hard to justify waiting on this one until my kids become familiar with the source material too. They're too little and we wants it.
I’m loving that 2023 is the year of Lego returning to beloved licensed themes, like LOTR and Indy, and I’m here for it.
This is the most anticipated 2023 set for me!!!
Part of Rivendell.
My screams are of joy, my wallet's are of fear...

Maybe Brickset can start including the weight of all the parts in their reviews, that's the best option when it comes to valuing.

Would be nice but it's only possibilities are microbuild to capture the whole city or a just a part of the walls but than it will be just a random wall.
Speculated price was 500$
I don't know where you're getting the idea that this is a LoTR set, but clearly that's a teaser for a new set of Sandopolis Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog.
Looks like fun. I don't know why it's Fellowship of the Ring though, because LEGO bringing back Lord of the Rings is clearly a

This is a good point. Sonic, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Stranger Things, Sesame Street, Winnie the Pooh, Home Alone, Nintendo, the sitcom sets, as well as the Castle and Pirates revival sets all were introduced through expensive sets (albeit most of them from IDEAS) without smaller companions and failed to springboard any follow-ups to this point (although TV Friends got one follow-up). What a surprise. In contrast, the LotR sets that brought me back from my Dark Age had a ton of smaller price-tag items and one could choose to spend big or enjoy obtaining all or most of the characters within a budget. The same was true then of Pirates of the Caribbean and Prince of Persia and I think before for the Indiana Jones sets. And from IDEAS you had success with Minecraft I believe thanks to smaller sets.

Can we get something like this + whole LOTR & Hobbit theme. Over 10 sets total. Please.

Weight is every bit as shallow of a metric as number of pieces. If you disagree, then I’ll gladly trade you my tub of tires for the same weight in minifigs.
I agree with the original point that piece count is overrated. I’d also argue that the subjective 10 cents/piece was established because it’s easy to do the math. (Why not 9 or 11?)
Trying to quickly determine the value of a set by pieces or weight or any shallow analytic would be as unhelpful as judging a movie by its length.

OK buddy. Obviously people are going to look at the component parts too, not JUST the weight. But it's better than looking at the parts and going by piece count.

I feel like any Minas Tirith set is likely to be only a portion of the entire city or else a micro scale build with some minifigs like that Hogwarts set from a while back. Not exactly how I’d prefer Denethor and Faramir, if no one else, to get their first physical figures.

From someone who has custom built a play set one for myself at approximately $300, I can confirm you are able to make one for under $350. Does it look perfect? No, but considering my limited selection of pieces mine looks pretty nice and is playable with minifigures at roughly $300.

Check Bricklink for part 11010, every year since 2012 there were sets with the piece in production. 2019 also saw packs of chrome gold coins with an ingot in the Friends line. They have never phased out chromed colors, just limited their use. Presumably because when faced with the choice of producing a part in gold, chrome will simply always be the more expensive option and just increase manufacturing cost of a set.
Hasbro was also categorically against chromed parts or figures after 2013 citing environmental reasons and only publicly reverted that stance after the announcement of chromed Retro Collection C-3PO and R2-D2 in 2022.

Given this reflection looks like it's of the courtyard scene, I'm guessing:
1. Gandalf
2. Elrond
3. Aragorn
4. Boromir
5. Legolas
6. Gimli
7. Frodo
8. Sam
9. Merry
10. Pippin
11. Bilbo
12, 13, 14. another human, another elf, and another dwarf
So if the reason why we can’t get a Geonosis Arena is because it needs to have vehicles, what vehicle do you think we’ll be getting with Rivendell? I always pictured Elrond as B-Wing pilot.
But seriously, this is a $500 set that depicts an argument. So at this point they are total hypocrites if they don’t release a set of Padame arguing in the senate.
Either way, I’m happy with my $30 Rivendell set, and look forward to more affordable LOTR sets in the future.

mmmh how about maybe using a scale that simply includes
price,
number of bricks,
weight of bricks,
amount of prints,
amount of extaordinary materials like electric components,
textiles
and chromed colors,
amount, complexity and amount of manufacturing steps for pre-assembled parts
to determine an accurate view?
Really, if anyone actually wanted to understand the true worth of sets, the methods are so obvious but everybody plays dumb all the time. Not even the article on this very site about this exact topic meaningfully acknowledged half of these points...
It's as if people are willfuly ignorant about facts such as battle droids being worth only a quarter or even less of a whole minifigure because they are regular injection molded parts without prints or assembly.
P.S. Design and Instructions are purposefully excluded because Lego treats these things open source anyway.

Certainly you could do Minas Tirith cheaper. If it is done as a collection of separate builds like Helms Deep was I bet $150-200 would give us a nice looking set. But even if it was $300-350, it at least would justify the price. I’m not sure I can say the same for Council of Elrond, it isn’t like your getting the entirety of Rivendell.
About time! Looks a bit different than the image leak for some reason... anyway can't wait to see the actual Rivendell set later this week and to buy it on the 1st of March :-)

I feel like Minas Tirith should get the Hogwarts treatment- one $400 monster detailed micro scale, and then multiple $80-150 minifigure scale connecting sets depicting different parts of it. I doubt I’ll get this, but I do feel it deserves it

I actually spend considerable time trying to devise a formula taking those factors and more into account to ascertain value, a few years ago. However, weighing the influence of varied factors is difficult, primarily because only LEGO knows the relative value of manufacturing certain parts or licensing fees, for instance.
Also, there are so many other factors which are almost impossible to account for in such a calculation. To take one simple example, look at 75331 The Razor Crest last year. Compared with Ultimate Collector Series sets of equivalent size, the set could be considered surprisingly inexpensive:
75192 Millennium Falcon - 7541 pieces - 8 minifigures - £649.99, $799.99, €799.99 *
75252 Imperial Star Destroyer - 4781 pieces - 2 minifigures - £649.99, $699.99, €699.99 *
75313 AT-AT - 6785 pieces - 9 minifigures - £749.99, $799.99, €799.99 *
75331 The Razor Crest - 6187 pieces - 4 minifigures - £519.99, $599.99, €599.99
I think the physical size of the Razor Crest is comparable with the other models and there are several new minifigures and parts in new colours, so one might expect a roughly equal price. However, I suspect LEGO was conscious that the Razor Crest, while certainly well-known, has not reached the iconic status of the Millennium Falcon, Star Destroyer or AT-AT, so targeted a slightly lower price point in an effort to account for that.
* Prices at time of release.

What a silly argument. Are you seriously trying to say that something like this would look better with fewer small pieces? Can you point to a single set or moc that would prove that point? Better yet, can you point to any actual examples in sets where multiple small pieces are used in place of bigger pieces where it makes any kind of noticeable difference in the piece count?
Display pieces (but also sets and mocs in general) look better with more detail. Using smaller pieces lets you get more detail. This fantasy notion of "inflating" a piece count is just goofy.
The only way anyone could possibly picture a 3500-piece build that matches this level of quality is if they'd never actually built anything. Or if they haven't moc'd since the days of pure 2x4s.

OH HECK YEAH
Whether I can afford a set or not, I'm just glad to see the LotR theme is finally making a comeback. Damn I feel old.
Its very interesting that the One Ring piece is still being produced in chrome (and, exclusively in chrome). Am I correct in thinking its the only piece Lego still does in chrome, and has been for the better part of a decade? Anyway I'd love to hear some behind-the-scenes stuff about that piece, because it was my understanding that they had very good reason to stop doing chrome

So we already know that Barad Dur is (most likely) coming next. Afterwards we need in priority: Minas Tirith, Edoras and Lothlorien :-)

Or, you know, a Witch-King battle set that’s actually accessible to people who can’t drop a few hundred dollars on a collectible. Brick-built fell beast with Eowyn/Dernhelm, Rohirrim Merry, and Witch-King (and maybe a new Theoden)? Yes please.

"
mmmh how about maybe using a scale that simply includes
price,
number of bricks,
weight of bricks,
amount of prints,
amount of extaordinary materials like electric components,
textiles
and chromed colors,
amount, complexity and amount of manufacturing steps for pre-assembled parts
to determine an accurate view?
Really, if anyone actually wanted to understand the true worth of sets, the methods are so obvious but everybody plays dumb all the time. Not even the article on this very site about this exact topic meaningfully acknowledged half of these points...
It's as if people are willfuly ignorant about facts such as battle droids being worth only a quarter or even less of a whole minifigure because they are regular injection molded parts without prints or assembly.
P.S. Design and Instructions are purposefully excluded because Lego treats these things open source anyway."
* Prices at time of release."
But isn't that the point, to work out which sets are better value for money and in this case the Razor Crest is better value than the other large SW sets.
Hang on, isit microfigure scale with exclusive minifigures?
this should have been micro scale like the Hogwarts castle

I suspect if you could see sales numbers, they’d prove that the market overwhelmingly voted that the UCS:MF2 was a better value than the UCS Razor Crest. I mean, that’s ultimately the truest measure of value in a set, right? If you feel it’s worth paying for, you’ll actually buy it. But that factors in a lot of outside influences, such has how much money you earn, what expenses take priority over boxes full of plastic bricks, and even if you have a similar set already.

Those are good points that I didn't really consider--looking over it, I didn't think about this carefully. You're right, some of those sets were more affordable. I'm not sure, though, if I'd go as far as calling a Dimensions one-off a proper set in a theme or a wide-ranging introduction--Dimensions was more geared toward a gaming mindset (or something). My mind was reflecting more on how the themes were introduced or reintroduced to a wider consumer base.

I wound up collecting the entire game myself before I actually had a console to play it on (!). I’ve loved videogames for most of my life, but over the last couple decades - ever since I emerged from my dark ages around 2002 - my disposable income (and time, and energy, etc.) went more toward LEGO, and kept me from keeping up with the video gaming world. LEGO Dimensions helped give me back an “in”, a LEGO theme I wanted for the parts but that also gave me an impetus to get a newer system than my old NES and SNES. I only started buying sets after I think all of Year 1 had been released and I began seeing steep clearances and such, but I wound up collecting essentially the entire thing - all 60 boxed retail add-on packs, plus the Starter Pack for three platforms, and the two polybag promos (Supergirl of course coming with the PS4 Starter; Green Arrow I thought I’d have to do without since spending the whole Thanksgiving holiday weekend with my family that year took precedence over going out for Black Friday stuff, but then I won Green Arrow in a Facebook giveawy from the LD social media account, making the dream of a complete roster attainable). I wish I’d gotten more, for parts and such, but did obtain a few dupes (the Cyberman being an obvious army builder, and I have a handful of others). I only finally got a PS4 in 2019, more than a year after getting my last LD pack.

Noticeable difference. The substitutions in Gardens are minor and few, and serve purposes. Swapping plates for bricks gives a better clutch on Snot bricks, meaning that tan 2x3 wasn’t an artificial inflation, but a utility swap. Any actual examples?

Yeah, the PS3, PS4, and Wii U versions all have the exact same toy pad base (hence it has the same part number in LEGO’s customer service info), and can use bases interchangeably; the only difference is the game disc. The XBox 360 and XBox One have their own unique versions of the toy pad, apparently because of some idiosyncrasy in Microsoft’s technical requirements for hardware accessories for those consoles, but I don’t know anything about them beyond having different part numbers, or whether either can be used on another platform. I do understand the PS4 version of the game works just peachy-keen on a PS5; I don’t know whether any other version of the game can be carried forward to a successor console (I know the XBox Series X is backwards-compatible with almost every game for all the previous XBoxes, and I imagine it should be able to run the LD game software just fine, but I don’t know whether it will work with any of the LD toy pads - can anyone here enlighten me?).
I originally got a PS4 Starter Pack (complete with bundled Supergirl promo) for a little less than half price in early 2018, after the game’s cancellation had been officially announced and the sales and discounts were turning into permanent clearances everywhere (and at Toys ‘R’ Us, which was also starting to clearance *everything* by that point anyway in the weeks before their closing); I’d already gotten over half the add-on packs by then. Within a couple months, remaining stock was reduced to shockingly low prices wherever it remained, and when I saw the PS3 Starter at Target for $15 and later the Wii U Starter at Best Buy for $12, I decided at that point it was a bargain just for parts. I wish now I’d gotten more.

Waw,..ignorance is bliss...
examples:
step 626-627: a 1x2x3 brick is replaced by 5!! parts.
steps 1-10: a ton of 1x3 bricks could have easily been replaced with 1x6 bricks or 1x9
and so on and so on
I stopped counting at 500 bricks that could have easily been left out in the entire build...
@Blondie_Wan:
Wii U is strictly Wii U. They went back to cartridges for Switch, and I don’t think the Wii U game would be compatible with the Wii console.
@BelgianBricker:
Sometimes they’ll find the part they _need_ to use in one place, and keep using that same part anywhere it will work. The Ultimate Collector’s Batmobile had 1x1 bricks in a few places that were actually Technic bricks. They needed the latter to mount cheese wedges in the bat-head over the engine intake, and the only instances of regular 1x1 bricks needed in the design only showed one face, so Technic bricks worked just as well. This reduced the variety of parts needed, and may have avoided wasting an element slot on something as stupidly mundane as a black 1x1 brick. So, there are legitimate cost-cutting reasons that can result in using a few smaller parts where one large part seems like it should have worked.

As I specifically said before, the plates are used instead of the 2x3 brick for better clutch on the snot bricks.
As for the 1x3s vs 1x6s, that resulted in a difference of 8 bricks. And with sets like Gardens that already have several hundred different elements, it makes perfect logical sense as to why they’d use 1x3s that are already used elsewhere, instead of adding an entire new element to the count to save…8 pieces.
And it’s ESPECIALLY silly to try and use Gardens as an example for this. If they swapped out all of your contextless “extras,” that would bring the ppp from 6.2 to a whopping 7. As in, *still a very good deal and not inflated to begin with*

now you are just making stuff up :/
It is easy to see why this "explanation" makes no sense:
-if the plate side would have been meant to be fixed, then LEGO would have desgined it to be fixed.
-if the plate-clutch is so important, than why are the other snot-connections on the plate-side made with bricks iso plates?
--the plate side comes off just as easy as the brick side, because the other snot-connections are made with bricks. Putting plates on the bottem is structurally non-sensical when you want something to be "fixed", because when you remove the wall, you pull from the top down, so the top-connection should be the strongest, not the bottom.
