The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell

The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell

©2023 LEGO Group

One of the most anticipated sets in recent years, 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, is now available at LEGO.com in the UK and Europe and will be available in the USA as well at midnight EST.

Despite its hefty price tag it's likely to sell like hot cakes so I suggest you place your order now to avoid disappointment.

The current gift with purchase is 40583 Houses of the World 1 and if you buy Rivendell during the next few days you'll also receive LOTR BrickHeadz set 40630 Frodo & Gollum.

Waiting to buy this when there’s a better GWP offering or double VIP points.

Very sensible. In fact, no other course of action makes sense, particularly with a set this expensive.

same, hoping for another reimagining set like 40580: Blacktron Cruiser or 40567: Forest Hideout

Quite. Bound to go out of stock, but I can't see supply being anything like as sporadic as it was for the Titanic!

Uck. I have zero interest in that.

By in Argentina,

At this time I have run out of kidneys to sell so I will be waiting for a few months.

By in France,

Just ordered Rivendell !!! With the two small sets offered. So happy :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

And that’s my first day one midnight purchase done.

Did I need to? No.

But also have I been mentally (and financially, thank you Christmas night shifts) preparing since it was first rumoured and I expected it to be £500? Yes.

By in Belgium,

I was on the fence about this but I've decided to skip it for now.
The BrickHeadz on offer are the cheapest ones (which makes it not very enticing) and the other GWP is just garbage.

I rather wait for double VIP or for the set to show up on another retailer with a discount that brings down the ridiculously overpriced tag in it.

By in Belgium,

Probably my first ever midnight purchase. I'm normally not easily lured into these 'traps', but I hope to finally find some time to build a few weeks from now, and I don't want to risk running into a stock shortage later on.

Is it the best set ever according to me? It's way up there, but no. However, it might be the most beautiful set in my opinion. I eventually might buy a second one on discount to create a larger section of Rivendell.

Very curious to what other LOTR sets they will produce in the coming years. Next up: Barad-dûr?

By in Australia,

Stayed up until midnight to make the purchase. I was gutted when the first wave was cancelled and have been campaigning for the return of the glorious Lord of the Rings theme ever since. I even submitted a Barad Dur Ideas project to help encourage the possibility of a return. Now that it has, I'm not going to risk the theme being cancelled again by waiting for a discount as this set sits on merchant's shelves. I'm of the strong opinion that if this set sells well, and I hope it will, we will see a Barad Dur, Minas Tirith and even an Edoras in the future. What's not to like about that!

Did that for me too, but it’s working now

Gravatar
By in Canada,

And when I go to the LoTR Theme page, no listing for the Rivendell set...

Gravatar
By in United States,

The only Day 1 purchase I've ever made (and most likely ever will, unless they have another stunner like Rivendell).

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Like magic, as soon as I post that last comment, it is working. Ordered!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Also picked up 40585 at same time

Gravatar
By in United States,

Will be (im)patiently waiting until VIP early Black Friday in hopes they will be doing quintuple bonus points again.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Cashed in my VIP points and got $150 off. Well worth it.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Like others, I got a 404 error but kept with it and was able to order it. Used a VIO discount code as well. Easily the best Lego set since Barracuda Bay (imho) and all all-time classic in the making. As an owner of all past retail sets and all 110 LOTR + Hobbit Minifigs, this was a no-brainer. And there goes my budget for 2023, but well worth the wait.

Well I am the entire queue at Birmingham uk, store am somewhat surprised but suspect signed copies in London are the big draw today.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Limit to 3 per person, so doesn't appear to be selling out as others thought it would.

Hold off until there's a worthwhile promotion.

Gravatar

Well my first ever day one purchase, i used all my VIP points and knocked about £90 off the price, I probably should have waited for double VIP but I've been preparing for this moment since it was first rumoured.

That is no surprise for me. Guess there is more queue to get vegetables in UK - I was reading article saying there is shortage. I laughed hard yesterday watching tutorials on YouTube how to be be super fast and buy Rivendell at midnight otherwise YOU will MISS OUT the set.

If you have just basic economy knowledge you know what is going on... Inflation is raising meaning that real household net disposable income going down. Whole economy is shrinking. Families prefer to buy food over toys. The situation is completely different than even 1.5 year ago. No more free money. People have bills to pay - interest rates going up and not only in UK.

That being said I will buy this set when the right time comes - at least 15% discount or super neat GWP

By the time it opened there were at least 30 people in the queue , so not a bad turnout that’s about half of the in store stock sold by 11.30, so expect it will be out of initial stock in the next few days if not sooner, I hope it sells as more LOTR sets would be no bad thing. Is it just me or is too much focus being put on GWPs double points would be nice but you always take your chance with re-stocks being timed to avoid these events and the same with stacked gifts, If it sells well Lego may keep it exclusive and I suspect a discount may never happen. I hope the stars align for those waiting for the perfect combination of offers but am just glad to have mine today.

Look it is hard to draw strong conclusion about total sales based on only 1 local shop. I believe for such large sets most of sales go through online store. I know it from my experience despite the fact there is LEGO store in my city why I should go to there and carry heavy set like this if I can order online and have free shipment ?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm in the 'wait for a decent GWP or double points' camp, but absolutely encourage folks in the 'buy it ASAP' camp in order to make this set an immediate success. And eliminate competition for it later ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Would love to get it, but I'm just about at the point where I'm out of room in my apartment.

Got it at the Lego Store. Besides the Brickheadz and Houses of the World they also gave me an Icons Moving Truck. Neat.

By in United States,

@Timsterino:
A member of my LUG hit the only LEGO Store in our state to buy it at launch. He said they had 38 copies in stock, and sold out in an hour.

@gradatim:
Absolutely true. Most buyers don't have easy access to a LEGO Store to begin with, and they won't reserve launch-day sets, so making a long drive is risky if there's a chance you'll show up and still be waiting in line when the last copy walks out the door. However, if the majority of LEGO Stores get hammered and sell out on launch day, it's a good indication that the set will be popular.

When UCS MF2 launched, my LEGO Store's late manager had to practically beg them for a dozen copies. Corporate was convinced it was so expensive that he'd still be selling them down past New Year's, but he actually had at least 20 people who stayed in line until the store opened (several others walked away when they realized they weren't going to make the cut). And what happened? Sales were so brisk during the VIP access period that they didn't have any left come time for the wide launch.

So, it kinda sounds like B&M sales are going strong. If the online listing goes out of stock at any point, that would also be a good sign. Even that doesn't guarantee the set has legs, but a lot of us are planning to delay purchase for a while. The non-exclusive GWP isn't an enticing draw, and people do have other expenses to work around.

We wanted a signed copy and to meet Mike Psiaki so we were planning to spend the weekend in London. So we called the Leicester Square shop to ask about the event beforehand, and we were told that many people had shown interest, that in other events people slept the night before in the queue and they couldn't guarantee that we could get one. They would not reserve a set for us either. They scared us so much that we decided not to go as it was going to be an expensive trip with no guarantees that we would get it signed.

We called yesterday again after the event and it turns out it was quite a different story. Not many people showed up, everyone got it signed and they were left with lots of unsold sets they said. In my opinion they messed up as I'm sure they scared off many customer with their predictions.

Most customers on that store are tourists who are not going to walk out with a huge box so they are going to have a difficult time selling them now as you can get it delivered for free as others say.

Many on the queue were resellers anyway looking at how many signed copies are now for sale on ebay, ridiculous.

The last time I went to the Leicester Square store it was a wasted effort. I wanted the Chinese New Year sets but they had been removed from sale. I wanted the TIE Bomber but it had sold out. I was told I should check online beforehand but stock levels aren't available for that store online. I even wrote to LEGO customer support but they appeared to be completely indifferent. Using a physical store is almost always a disappointment and such a chore as there are so few.

It would take an extremely gullible person to buy a 'signed' copy from a reseller believing it was genuine... I bet a lot more signed sets appear than have ever seen the designers' pens!

Signed copies? They are damaged boxes! Scribbled on with a pen, whatever next. :-)

Haha I see what you mean. It's not like it was signed by Peter Jackson or any of the actors, that might be different then. I think it only adds value to the set for the people who actually went to the event and met the designers, for others is just a damaged box for sure.

Yes more are popping up on ebay but none have sold yet. Looks like the people on the queue also got a card with their number on the queue, so that might help on the authenticity bit. In any case, not much value, if any, is added when sets are signed by the designers.
