LEGO teases new Return of the Jedi sets

Posted by ,

Following seemingly inevitable leaks over the last couple of weeks, LEGO has today hinted towards two approaching sets from Return of the Jedi on Twitter.

The parts flanking this photograph are clearly identifiable as the window from the Emperor's throne room and a speeder bike, surrounded by foliage from the Forest Moon of Endor.

Presumably these sets will be officially revealed imminently, so keep an eye on the homepage for more information.

Are these the sets that have already been reviewed by multiple people online after they bought them in stores? ?? Can't wait for the official reveal! /s

Don't ride those bikes off-road, kids: think what'll happen if you nose in and go over the bars.
You in the middle, wellie boots and loose clothing are not good ideas for off-roading.

Lego's reveals are coming slowly these days.
It's simultaneously quite surprising and not surprising that there already high quality reviews of both sets up on YouTube.

I mean, I know Lego can't really acknowledge leaks, and the vast majority of their consumer base don't follow leaks, but it's always pretty funny seeing them play coy and "tease" sets that are already out in the open.

Being generous to LEGO, I think the instances of these Star Wars sets and the Indiana Jones range appearing on shelves so exceptionally early are hard to account for in scheduling the announcements.

However, LEGO is ultimately responsible for distributing sets so early. The retailers should be adhering to release dates, but there comes a point when this happens so regularly that LEGO needs to anticipate problems.

Lukes new hair looks like Shaggy from the 2002 Scooby Doo movie, Lukes head shape has always been round and through the new part they make it far too oval. I knew this would happen if they deigned to update the hair piece, the standard hair piece is still far more accurate which is funny and fitting since the hair piece comes from 1978, around the time Lukes hairstyle was fashionable anyway. Palpatine has white pupils instead of black which vastly improves the cohesion of his faces, the Endor Luke and Leia figures look pretty bad without cloth ponchos and olive green legs, even a dedicated Speeder Bike Chase set can't come with more than one measly Scout Trooper, the design of Sheevs lookout window looks pretty nice but feels like it is missing pretty much without the majority of stairs, no walkable area below the stairs and no chasm for Palpy to fall into.

Jabbas throne room has been cancelled or pushed back to next year lol I guess the Sailbarge will get us enough Jabba related contents anyway though I really wonder if they will skip the Firespray-class Leia, it would be really strange to omit her from the entire set and scene when the barge at the 650$ price point should come with a pretty complete cast of more than 20 figures. Also hoping that Boba will finally be updated to his ROTJ look which should mean olive green helmet and jetpack.

By in Germany,

These are this year's 18+ Pedestal Dioramas, The Final Duell & Speeder Bike Chase.
7200 and and 7201 were obnoxiously priced back then but are still a better value.

I look forward to being told why my eyeballs are wrong and that the throne room is a great value for what you get.

By in United States,

I'm willing to bet these will be one of three things: a giveaway with an extreme threshold, a 4+ set that looks plain dumb, or a very expensive 18+ set.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I always found funny how Brickset team seems to be oblivious to the reveals when in fact they're probably with the review ready to be published.

Anyway, more expensive premium dioramas and dissapointing Endor figures. Luke's new hair will divide the community.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner: a very expensive 18+ set it is (see online leaks).

These new diorama sets are so disappointing and lackluster, and their prices are out of this world. Figures that they would cancel/push back the Jabbas throne room diorama, as that was the one that I was excited for. The April Fools joke about cancellation of sets kind of fits the Star Wars theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huh. For some reason I was thinking these had already been officially announced. I didn’t go seeking out leaks, so there are only a few avenues by which leaks will seek me out.

@Anonym:
Why would Endor Luke ever need legs in any shade of green? He wore a camo poncho over the outfit he wore on the DS2.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Dammit I thought these may be actual teases of something I hadn't seen online already.

Fair play to Brickset for playing by the rules though, one of the few out there that do it seems

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm thinking I'll already have the parts for the throne room - I have a plan for one already - and that 2 Endor sets will be needed to give enough scale to the forest.

I just (last night) finished the Dagobah diorama, which I think is really nice. The minifigure scale works well for these kind of scenes.

Lego is like the parent that threatens to punish their children if they do something wrong but never does so the kids keep doing whatever they want. Leaks are part of the business so they just need to start announcing these sets earlier because as you noted, THEY KNOW when they start shipping them.

We won't be getting a sail barge this year. The October slot has already been leaked as a Clone Wars Venator. OT Boba should be in an August set so that will probably set the precedent for what we might get. I don't expect them to recolor the elements though, since they didn't even recolor them for BoBF/Mandalorian.

By in United Kingdom,

A set being found in a store and actually purchased is no longer “a leak”. When that happens LEGO need to acknowledge it and quickly make the official announcement within a day or so. To blindly continue with the tease and then, even later, the official reveal, simply makes them look ridiculous.

Your eyeballs are not wrong and all of these dioramas need a discount before they are a good value. Lego will charge what people keep paying. Not so say they aren’t fun designs, but I won’t be purchasing any at full price.

I'm willing to maintain that voluntary economic exchanges are valued by the eye of the beholder...but yes, my eyeballs are *screaming* (metaphorically) that those aren't $100/$80 sets. $80/$60, *maybe,* even with Disney tax.

The throne room comes out to something like 8 cents per part...which I don't know if that means there's a bunch of 1x1 plates underneath the baseplate or what. But it further tells me that PPP is a horrible metric at the margins, and this is definitely a set in the margins. (Like I said the other day, same applies to 4+ sets, where the chonky pieces distort the PPP metric by a lot.)

Gravatar

Time to wait for 30% discounts on these dioramas.

I agree with you both. I would expect LEGO has the promotional material created by the time sets ship to vendors, so they should be nimble enough to share the teases and announcements at the drop of a hat if sets get accidentally leaked. So far, they have been so slow that my eateem of them as a major marketing company falls short. o_O

I don’t understand why they wait so long to announce sets that are starting to appear in the wild. There’s no longer any element of surprise or anticipation. Just announce the stuff before anything gets shipped.

What new leaf piece? Are you talking about the fern? If so, those were first released in Rivendell and will be in Mario sets as well.

By in United States,

@PhantomBricks:
The sail barge was part of the big product testing leak. There were no guarantees that any of those would even go into production, much less release dates, so far as I heard. UCS ships, however, typically fill the May 4th slot, while MBS sets have been released late in the year. If the Venator is supposed to be out in October, I’m really curious what form it will take.

I will assume that those who seek such info already know this year’s UCS set, and that it’s probably not the sail barge.

@Doctor_Hugh:
It may be a violation of street date, and could potentially draw a very expensive fine from the studio, but yeah, LEGO employees at all levels are subject to NDA contracts. Even if you have a copy in your hands and ask them about it, they can’t confirm that it exists if they haven’t been given clearance from corporate (so says my local store’s manager). Any other retail chain that received stock will be given a street date for selling the product, and they’ll know if it’s a hard date (enforced) or a soft one (“turn a blind eye”), but they can’t exactly be policed for photos getting out.

@graymattr:
If Joe’s Discount LEGO Sets accidentally (or “accidentally”) shelves the product and sells a copy before street date, that’s on them, and the store may be fined. If TLG follows that up by posting press releases before they’re cleared to do so by Lucasfilm, they could draw down the wrath of the Mouse.

@560heliport:
That’s not how it was written (and I also forgot Leia’s pants should be a light shade of blue, in addition to Luke’s being black). I’ve only seen one image besides this trade, and I can’t really see either of their legs in the box front art, so I have no idea what color they actually used anyways.

By in United States,

In my early career, I started out in Sales, then did Marketing, Public Relations, followed by Community Relations, Government Affairs, Corporate Comms and for the past 20+ a focus around Omni-Channel Marketing Technology as a CMO, then became an industry consultant, blah, blah, blah…

The point of sharing my background, is because I love marketing and have been behind many product launches, thus, I wonder how the MarComms people, in these type of roles, within LEGO, feel about having their products leaked, ALL the time.

Then I wonder, if there is an impact and if so, what that impact might be. I am guessing, that only the DIE HARD AFOL types see these leaks and that they have little to no impact on us, as we are likely to buy them or not (mind is made up).

I then wonder what the impact of true influencers may be on their sales, within our AFOL community vs. casual buyers, in terms of their getting the leaks of sets very early and then really ripping into them regardless of the condition of the images (or actual set).

If the influencers say the price is awful, does that delay your purchase until there is a sale? Does their saying the set, “sucks” sway you, in any way, in terms of buying the set at alll?

My curiosity is around this quote, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression…”

So, if an influencer breaks a leak and rips on the set, what is that impact vs. LEGO having the first opportunity to intro the product to you, with all of their bells and whistles in terms of glamor shots, videos and PR spin.

Back in the day, I ate up LEGO official releases (images, videos, set description). Today, I don’t even bother looking at them or reading, because the set has already been “reviewed” or broken-down, in detail on YouTube or Instagram.

Any thoughts?

Personally Joe Blow's reviews on insta or YT have little to no impact on my desire to purchase any given set or not. The only things I want to see are clear pictures and detailed descriptions. While leaked info prior to any actual photos is always an interesting read I'd much rather get the correct info over speculation. And I always take the leaks with many grains of Salt. Leak videos without actual pictures are always suspect to me so I rarely bother with any of them even those who are considered trusted sources. And some of the worst to mw are leak detail posts and reposts that use photos of old previously released sets for hype.

So, for context, full-on photos of the sets on the shelf in a store in Montreal made it onto Reddit. Two prime Lego YouTubers ran videos on the Reddit leaks. (As much as I enjoy those two YTers, they are often just regurgitating a Reddit article.) However, a third YTer actually got his hands on the Throne Room set and did an unboxing review.

I wasn't referring to the actual photos of these two sets. My comments were more about the leaking in general such as everything that "leaked" yesterday via a couple of different sources and the incessant videos mostly based on speculation & what someone heard somewhere. Unboxing videos are proof of existence but not something I routinely watch because I find the dialog in most of them to be very repetitious & painful to listen to. In my original comment I should have said Leak videos rather than reviews. But reviews rarely will sway my opinion about whether to actually purchase a set or not.

Just remember they play by LAN’s rules so they get review copies for FREE “early”.
If you are not part of LAN there are no rules to follow.
Best move by some YouTubers to get kicked out of LAN as they can then release what they want without a corporate handbrake.

I honestly would have bought it too to get the minifigs even if the set sucked (which it probably would have given the 2 dioramas that are being released), but at least the minifigs would have most likely been desirable. Wanted to get the updated minifigs to go with the 2006 sail barge set that I have, since it sounds like we're not getting the rumored UCS sail barge set any time soon if at all.

I liked it better when you got a catalogue for the whole year in January, and you could then spend months building up an appetite for a September release. Everything is too immediate these days, and without the months and months of anticipation, it’s often quite underwhelming to get a set and build it within days of first seeing it advertised. You develop more love for the brick if you had to wait a long time before it was released, and then even longer perhaps before you could afford it. This cycle of continuous teasers and releases is doing more harm than good by fostering addictive habits amongst the fan base. Wow, didn’t expect to end on that when I started typing!
