My hot take is that LEGO Movie 2 is better than the first. I don't know what it is, but it hit me in a way the first one just didn't. I don't even have a sibling, or kids, I have nothing to really relate to in this movie, and yet, it worked. Perhaps being a brony had something to do with it as I was pre-exposed to girly things and characters just breaking out into banger songs.

By in New Zealand,

The hairpiece from this is funky. And squishy.

By in United States,

They have a face? I guess I haven't watched TLM2 enough..
Quite a cool hairpiece, though. Hope it's not rubber, and actual plastic...

2nd mini doll in a row now, wonder what’ll come next.

God, TLM2 character and set design was so amazing. Would've collected a whole theme of zany Systar System sets if I could! Sweet Mayhem in particular was such a cool sci-fi design that perfectly blended the bubbly Friends aesthetic with that of an effortlessly cool space hero like Samus Aran. And under the helmet, she's pink and sparkly! Can't beat that!

And introducing Mathew Ewald as Nick Bluetooth!

That expression looks about halfway between Heath Ledger's Joker, and the cinematic Pennywise.

@MCLegoboy:
Mmm...no. TLM2 felt like they just remade TLM, but this time the boy was the bad guy.

Mayhem: I am General Mayhem. Intergalactic Naval Commander of the Systar System. Open the gate.
WYLDSTYLE: No way! That gate is never, ever, ever, ever... Emmet, what're you doing?

Sweet Mayhem is such a great character in TLM2. She is the coolest minidoll. Love her pink face versus flesh tone and her hair piece is so unique.

They captured what to me looks like an eye twitch perfectly.

one of my fav minifigs

I wish I'd gotten the set this version was in; not only did I love the minibuilds, but I wanted to get five Sweet Mayhems, so I could put all of the Friends (at the time, anyway) in spacesuits. As it was, I only managed to get three of her (from 70824, 70830, and 853875), which, along with owning 41713, means I can only put all the classic Friends in spacesuits if one of them has a sex change. Oh well, there's always Bricklink...

@MCLegoboy and @Purpledave: I consider the two to be roughly equal in quality, although I do wish TLM2 had more 2-in1 sets than just 70831 and 70842.

Sweet Mayhem was really cool. Her ship actually had a pretty neat name that was only used in behind the scenes material. I'm pretty sure it was "Formida-ball" or something like that

It didn’t feel that way to me. It felt in part like a commentary on the first movie mixed with a broadening of its world and expansion of what was possible.

I love it, though I will admit I did see it fewer times in theaters and also bought fewer of the associated sets (though mostly because it was just harder for me to keep up with everything).

By in United States,

First and probably only time we will see Minifigures and minidolls in nor only the same theme, but in the same sets together.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I, too, liked TLM2 more than TLM. Partly because I have a younger sister, and our father is nothing like Lord Business.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely one of the coolest minidolls ever released. Her helmet and wings are really nice pieces.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Me and my siblings collectively collected the entire TLM2 line. Most of the sets are in need of rebuilding now but I still wish I had gotten welcome to Apocalypse burg.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Her hair is excellent even if I do prefer her helmet.

Its less fun but it IS a better movie.

Never got this figure...which is weird: I kept 'eyeballing' TLM2 set for most of the figures, but nada...just didn't happen.

My take of 'the movie' is...well, I thought it was 'good'; but still wish it was more 'fun'...plus: after "The Lego Batman Movie" (GREAT) and "The Lego Ninjago Movie" (confusing)...I the word 'fatigue', but...FOUR movies within FIVE years...each with 'diminishing returns'...and biggest "downside": no "Lego Batman Movie 2", which 'sounded' like the Justice League movie we needed/deserved...oh well.:|

By in Netherlands,

I think this was one of the first instances where I thought 'Dang, maybe minidolls aren't so bad'. It's not just Mayhem's design - which is just stellar - but the fact that she could co-exist with the minifigs.

The buildings in the current Friends-wave are *great*, and I've noticed that there isn't quite as much incompatibility between minifig- and minidoll-scale anymore; it used to be pretty bad. I dunno man, maybe everything IS awesome.

Okay, except for the microdolls. Those things are abominable.

By in Singapore,

I loved TLM2 too but some parts I was not quite fond of and it might not have been as exciting as the first. I love the inclusion of mini dolls in this movie too!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It's a beatiful hairpiece but it tends to fall off easily for some reason.

By in United Kingdom,

To weigh in with my two cents, I personally didn't like TLM2 quite as much as the original one (and having watched it for the first time only last month, it's still fairly fresh in my mind)... although, for me, a large part of that is that most of the original cast felt like they got pretty sidelined. Not Emmet, Wyldstyle and Batman, of course; but Benny and Unikitty and etc., while present, felt to me like they contributed very little to the story. I feel like the first movie balanced its cast better, making each of them feel more important.

(To be fair, it may also come down to the fact that I went into the first one not expecting ANYTHING from it, just because I was passing the cinema while it was on and didn't have anywhere else to be and thought 'why the heck not?' and was pleasantly surprised. By TLM2 I was already expecting quality, so it wasn't such a huge step up from my expectations as the original had been!)

That said, I still enjoyed the sequel; and I have a lot of appreciation for Sweet Mayhem's design in particular. Love her hair... though I think https://brickset.com/minifigs/tlm206 is my favourite version of the character for still having her armour and wings as well as the hair; her torso design feels a little plain to me without that.

By in Denmark,

My favourite Mini doll.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love TLM as Benny is my favorite character (SPACESHIP!), but when TLM2 came around, there were plenty of spaceships, but with very little Benny action, which made very little sense. However, this film also brought us 70841 Benny's Space Squad with the revamped classic helmet therein, so I'm content with the knowledge that even though Benny wasn't as much of a star in this go round, we got more of his many-colored friends to hang out with. Also, Stardust Benny looks awesome. I'm still kicking myself for not getting him and then adding Avatar jay's head Ninjago + some red hair to make Ziggy Stardust!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah, this is the first minifig I can build (the one I have is listed with the helmet, so still according to Brickset I own none of the featured minifigs thus far!).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I wish I'd gotten this or other versions of her when they were out. I could always 3rd party but it's not the same, y'know?

Gravatar
By in United States,

So far, it feels like the chief criterion for Random Minifig(ure) of the Day is the exact opposite of that for Random Set of the Day, like it has to be *no more* than ten years old.

Oh - I just went back to the first and saw @Huw’s notes on the first RMotD confirming that’s actually close to the truth, only figures since 2010. That’s going to leave our lots of classics. I get that that’s a major year for figures since that’s when the blind-bagged Minifigures line began, but still, why limit it to figures since then?

@Blondie_Wan:
2010 was the launch of the CMF line, and Brickset pulls minifig images from Bricklink. Photos of minifigs predating 2010 get progressively less reliable in terms of quality and resolution, the earlier you go. An arbitrary cutoff will never make everyone happy, but that’s the point @Huw picked.

Agreed, the Systar stuff was great. I'd happily take a sci fi Friends spin-off line, like how LEGO Elves was for fantasy.
Damn, I miss Elves :(

I wish they would have used this hair's rainbow spray technique on a baseball cap for Marty McFly in set 10300. It would have been perfect!

Or Tinkerbell's wings. Or an entire monochrome (multichrome?) figure. Or every car-part ever. Or the next danged Classic Space-person. I just really like this hair, okay?

I mean, I *did* read Huw’s explanation…
