@Randomness: Thank you. I'm guessing the "L" in "L-Motor" is related to the "lpf" in the element's name. "Large power functions" and "Large Motor," perhaps?

There’s an LPF Battery Box AA, an LPF Light, an LPF Motor Large, an LPF Motor Servo, and an LPF Motor XL. Everything else omits LPF from the name, but I’d guess it stands for LEGO Power Functions. True PF components debuted in 2007-2009 and 2012, and the only ones I see that aren’t “LPF” are the Func Motor and the long extension cable. Short extension cable, AAA box, Li-Poly box, IR receiver, toggle, and all of the remotes don’t even show up. That’s a pretty haphazard classification system. Oh, and both Mindstorms cables and some PU components do. Go figure.
Slightly disappointed it only seems to have been used for big technic vehicles; not even one more unorthodox use like a windmill or anything?
