Random minifig of the day: min051
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random minifigure is min051 Alex - Medium Azure Legs, Helmet, and Armor, a Minecraft figure that came in one set, 21137 The Mountain Cave, released during 2017.
Our members collectively own a total of 928 of them. If you'd like to buy one you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $26.20.

Hey, our first Minecraft minifigure. Cool.
A classic. Much respect to the original Alexes and Steves.
Steve from mincraft???

Nope, her name is Alex. Same theme, different character.
Also, we only own 928? That's gotta be a new record low, right?

There are other Alex minifigs, but this one is only in that one set.
Oof that set is much wanted by my little ones (I concur). At least they can re-create this figure in that set from the myriad of MC parts we do have.

Nope, 2 days ago was https://brickset.com/article/95049/random-minifig-of-the-day-frnd463 at 107, presumably since it was only in a foil pack.
But also, https://brickset.com/article/94878/random-minifig-of-the-day-cty1586 was 63, which could be because it's brand new and in a 4+ City set.
This is the third most expensive, after https://brickset.com/article/94819/random-minifig-of-the-day-sh498 and https://brickset.com/article/93164/random-minifig-of-the-day-sw1244 , but that's as close to a value related record as this is, so.
Minecraft I'm sure needs no introduction, but its a sandbox survival game with the goal of collecting resources and building structures out of blocks.
Early on in the game's 2009 development the default player was added to the game. This player would eventually become known as "Steve" and would serve as one of the mascots of the game.
Steve was originally meant to be an androgynous protagonist for players to relate to, but due to having a beard and, well, being named Steve, people quickly assumed the character was male.
To combat this, in 2014 a more feminine default player model was developed, known as Alex. Compared to Steve they had paler skin and thinner arms, and were actually modeled after lead creative developer Jens Bergensten. Steve and Alex have gone on to be the iconic mascot duo of the game. While their personalities are often kept blank for players to better relate, Steve is usually depicted as the more artistic and Alex the more combative.
In order to defend yourself in Minecraft there are several tiers of armor that offer various degrees of protection. Prior to the Nether Update, the best armor in Minecraft was Diamond Armor. It provided a little more protection than Iron Armor, while lasting around three times as long. Crafted from rare blue gemstones found deep in the earth, the brilliant azure wear is often flaunted as a status symbol in the game... despite the fact that most decent players can get a full set in well under a week of playing.

All I care is that it’s a source of zombies.
Funny thing about Lego Minecraft is: TLG finally GOT IT...the first sets didn't feature minifigures, they were 'brick built' figures. Took TLG 'til the second year to 'course correct'...wonder how long it'll take on Mario...
Azure legs? I’ll have you know, Huwbot, that that is diamond armour!
Value seems a little misleading - these are offered on Bricklink for less than £6 currently. @Huw, how does Huwbot calculate the selling price stated?

The markup on that set is staggering. We know by now that Lego is a good investment, but this particular set just went crazy in its price-increase.
I like Minecraft and (I hope you're sitting down for this revelelation) I like Lego, but the combination of the two, not so much. It's obvious that it's a success though, and that it brings a lot of joy to a lot of people. I'm not complaining.
What I am complaining about, is that it's apparently depressingly easy to find diamonds in Lego Minecraft-sets, while I'm usually wandering around in dank, dark caves for days on end in unenchanted and more importantly, unrepaired and unwashed iron pants. There is no justice.
I've never been into video games really, which sort of puts Minecraft outside my interests, but I've accumulated a fair volume of parts used over the last few years, so I think I actually have ended up with one of these. Something about Minecraft seems to have led to a lower retention rate around here--maybe sets being given to Minecraft (but non-LEGO) fans just didn't take.
Well, no complaints for me: blue plates, green and brown bricks--this is great raw brickage! But the the figs...
They don't do much for me. So while I think I did have this Alex, if I did, she's no longer complete--the head, at least, was given away.
Wow, apparently the set she comes in goes for over $1000 new? This has got to be the most recently released set that goes for more than 1K on the aftermarket.
@WemWem:
70922, released the same year, was going for just over $1000 MISB the last time I’d checked, but prices have dropped quite a bit.

This would be an interesting Brickset article, if it doesn’t already exist. Which sets have appreciated the fastest on the secondary market?

Most sets are expensive in the aftermarket because of unique minifigures (think Star Wars' Pre Viszla or Kanan) or, on occasion, because of a unique part (the pre-modulars and the AT-OT come to mind there). In this case the minifigures aren't that rare or unique (I will admit the charged creeper is a bit pricey), but the unique wolf and the sheep heads alone account for about 1/4 of the set's value.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea!
Did this give Huwbot the advancement "cover me in diamonds"?
Looks like me most mornings.

Back in the day I was going to buy an expensive LEGO set for the summer and I had to choose between Ninjago City and the Mountain Cave. In the end I chose Ninjago City because I assumed it would inflate more and I could probably afford the Mountain Cave on the aftermarket. MC ended up going up in price a lot more than I expected.
