40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure has been added to LEGO.com, taking inspiration from the giant minifigure which stands outside the LEGO Campus in Billund!

This set comprises 654 pieces and will be available from the 1st of June, costing £44.99, $49.99 or €49.99.

View box images below, including one which reveals a surprising feature beneath the minifigure's hat...

I think the minifigure looks fantastic, matching the style of 40504 A Minifigure Tribute, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments.

By in Ireland,

Not just an upscaled minifigure (as if that wasn't good enough) but he's a mech too!

By in United Kingdom,

Absolutely here for this, and not restricted to a certain part of the the world like 40504. We fans are eating well today.

Day 1 buy!

By in United Kingdom,

Hoping this starts a template for custom large-scale 'figs, like what happened with BrickHeadz back in the day - lovely stuff!

By in Australia,

Glad to see the maxi figure design applied to a set like this. It's very charming.

That said, the hat looks pretty rough especially in the real life images. It looks like a giant slab with a dome, and not a hat. I'd love if it included parts to make a bald figure like the OG minifigure statue set.

Also don't love whenever LEGO makes levers for a minifigure to hold that the minifig can't actually hold, as is the case within the hat here. A minor quibble but a quibble nonetheless.

By in Malaysia,

Hoping for a spaceman version

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego, please note that I will pay an utterly irresponsible amount of money for a Red Spaceman and/or Majisto in this style. I'm livid that Captain Redbeard isn't easily available at retail.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's gotta be the smoothest looking one of these Lego has ever produced. Also, Ratatouille shenanigans.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Day 1 buy.
This would make a great collectible line; up-scaled minifigs of themes from the past.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

A set like this with customisation like 41597 would be amazing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

...adds yet another set to the want list. Give me a classic space figure, please.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Nice. I hope this leads to other upscaled figs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Slight improvement on 3723 which I must find.... you'd think it would hard to loose.... Will be getting this one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm pleasantly surprised that this set costs $50 USD. I thought it was going to be much more than that. I guess that's what happens when TLC makes a large set that doesn't have a license.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What an elaborate stash box. But the question remains, could you stash a lid under its lid?

I want one! (Not for the storage of cannabis flower... no no, I swear, not for that reason.)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can't wait to see this guy terrorizing a modular LEGO City with his mech. I can hear his monologue now: "Today LEGO City, you meet your doom: for I am your master now with my mecha! Tremble with fear at his classic smile! Be afraid of his blue trousers and red shirt of DOOM! You will all come to fear the name BOB and my MECHA-ME!"

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The little guy sitting in the hat is hilarious!

Gravatar
By in United States,

As a kid I always wanted that giant brick built minifig they made way back in the day. This'll do nicely!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's an easy fix, but: exposed studs on the feet. Argh. Why go that smooth if you're going to leave the toes with blisters?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Superb! Was expecting it to say 'only from Billund'.
Same size as Harry Potter, just a pity that the wooden minifig was a bit smaller. A definite buy.

I'm reminded of an old comedy sketch of a man talking while eating his own brains with a spoon!
'Not the 9 o' Clock News' or 'Monty Pyhon' maybe?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The hat looks really rough around the back and resembles the wrong mold from what the actual minifig wears. Seems disjointed in that sense, but the shaping is otherwise nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love these giant minifig builds. Hope we see a lot more in the future!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just a must-have, that's all. TLG is firing on all cylinders.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The guy in the hat is such a goofy idea. I love it.

And the price seems decent.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Well, now my 'wanted list' (once again) includes over 100 sets, due to all those nice reveals…

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is this a June 1st release globally or just everywhere but North America?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow the fact the minifig is the pilot , just wonderful!

Would echo those asking for a Classic Spaceman, yes please!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I need this - looks superb, good price and universal approval from everyone here! It just shows what can be done with 'proper' bricks and no licensing costs to pass on...
Oh, and we need a space version too!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That is just a delight - the price is surprisingly reasonable and the minifigure 'driving' is the icing on the cake.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So that's canon now? Minifigs are actually androids with even smaller nano-figs controlling them? All these decades and I never knew! And yes, absolutely, waiting for CS man. The more colors, the better!

@C_O_Patra:
Well, with the cockpit open, it really is just a slab with a dome. Anyways, using bricks with studs on the sides, or brackets, it might be possible to thicken the top of the brim in the center, and the bottom at the sides, to create an illusion of curvature. Then again, the original minifig baseball cap really was just a slab with a lopsided dome. As for the levers, I can’t be sure without testing it, but _if_ the minifig hand will fit within that blue part (which I would not want to bet on), and if the angle of the arm sockets is favorable, it might be possible to use the wrist rotation, the hip movement, and the control handle rotation to actually get the hands and handles lined up.

@crazylegoman:
It also probably uses a ton of common shapes in common colors. Some of them may be included in bulk. There’s only two printed elements I can spot, one of which is a basic smiley minifig head.

By in Puerto Rico,

Big boy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's very very cool. The minifigure under the hat is a brilliant addition.

Gravatar
By in United States,

There's too much blue behind the dome of the hat, which really spoils the shape and makes it look more like a bowler from some angles. I feel like they could have reduced that behind-the dome space somehow, or else the dome was the wrong size for the head.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Harry & Hermoine could use a new friend, so on the wanted list it goes...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Might retool the face into a robot, really emphasize this is a mech. Laser sword too while I'm at it.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

We need this in a Johnny Thunder version.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This will go great with the Red beard they released for everyone to purchase. oh wait.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the highlights of summer reveal day. Will definitely buy!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It's cool, but wake me when there's a Blacktron variant.

A minifigure can't hold the bars within that part. There's just enough space for a clip.

Yes the original baseball cap was a slab with a dome, but it still looked like a hat. This just looks a bit ugly, but doesn't ruin the set.

By in New Zealand,

So now for the most important question: Is the head the same size as the helmet collection helmets? Imagine the possibilities then - just swap it out for Darth Vader or Commander Cody, etc…

Gravatar
By in United States,

@C_O_Patra:
Eh, it was a thought anyways.

@DavoDestroyer:
The head looks like it’s around eight studs wide, while the helmets are more like 12 studs wide. One stud walls on the helmets feels more accurate, so these would probably be a bit oversized. Then again, so do minifig helmets…

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love this

Gravatar
By in Germany,

That opening helmet image gives me certain Terry Gilliam animation / Monty Python vibes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love it!
Now do Red & White Spacemen!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Do we think the face is a sticker or printed?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Even with the weird hat (with a brim in the back?) - I still like it.
I too hope this leads to other up-scale minifgures. Would love a Spaceman . . . and a Darth Vader & Luke up-scaled set (similar to the Harry & Hermione set) would be awesome!

I’m sure someone will try it. Unfortunately I don’t have any of the helmet collection so that person won’t be me….at this stage.

Gravatar
By in United States,

$50 is a very decent price! …Kids will love making him… and then cover him with stickers.

Going back to the Chima Legend Beasts, and maybe even before that, it was noted that they tend to limit stickers to stuff like fur/feather/scale patterns, claws, and other less critical details, while the faces tend to be prints. In terms of sets with a younger age range, this enables kids to build the model with little to no assistance, on their own time, and then an older person might be able to help apply the stickers at a later time. Having the face is more important than other details.

76393 has printed faces for both characters, and a printed tie-and-collar. 40504 has a sticker for the map tile and the pirate hat, but the face is once again printed. Zooming in, I can’t make out anything that looks like a sticker, so it looks like this has a printed classic smiley head for the minifig, and a matching printed face for the large version. If they have any plans to make more of these, doing a printed face for this one now makes sense, since they’d just keep using the same printed face for any minifig released prior to the debut of Pirates.

@quincy:
Well, if you’ve got any copies of 5005738, you’re all set!

By in United States,

@Ridgeheart:
Enough of it looks so identical that I have to assume the basic structure was based on a previous official set. However, the face, helmet, airtanks, and logo are probably all original, and the hands are a significant improvement over what his set gets. Anyone who buys this set should absolutely slip a few cheese wedges into the palms of those hands.
