I thought the barking dog was the only sound brick. I didn’t know this existed. What sound does it make?

Heh. I actually own the set this is in, but had to look it up to be sure. In 2012, we got our LUGBulk order the earliest it has ever arrived, I think in early May. Included were 200 of the clingers from this theme, which I'd ordered, but had no specific plan for. Our club president suggested we put together an alien invasion for Brickworld that June, since the theme was "The End of the World". So I bought a copy of the alien mothership, decided it looked a bit anemic, and proceeded to bulk it up significantly. Since I never actually built the original model, and I tend to leave unused parts in the boxes they came in, somewhere I should have the mothership box with this part in it.

Sort of a classic retro sci-fi “bwoopbwoopbwoop” UFO sound.

I know of at least three sound bricks from around that time - this one, the doorbell and barking dog from 5771 Hillside House, and the carousel music one from 10196 Grand Carousel. I assumed they’re all essentially the same physical brick except with chips encoded with different sounds.

Having the UFO sounds play as you spun the alien mothership around was the coolest thing ever to 7-year-old me, completely blew me away and solidified Alien Conquest as one of my favourite Lego themes!

I've always thought a combo light brick/sound brick for the tie fighters would amp up their swooshability.

There's also one that makes a dinosaur roaring sound in 4958, and clear versions of this brick with a motor sound in 4893 and an alarm klaxon in 8634 (it's kind of a neat feature, it's set to sound when the Agent's car bursts through a gate).

I found this piece in an old, bulk box. Had no idea what it was. Thanks Huwbot!

Guido: (shouting something in Italian)
(The hub cap flies off the car's tyre and out of the shop)
Mater: Hey look! A UFO!
Lightning McQueen: Mater, that was a hub cap.
Mater: No. It was a UFO. And I know cause I seen one once...
Lightning McQueen: What?
Mater: Yes. It was a crystal clear night...
(Flashback. Mater is at a train crossing and the storm comes as the bells ring)
Mater: Huh? That's weird.
(Mater spots Mator and screams)
Mater: What in the... Hey there. Welcome to Earth. My name is Mater.
Mator: My name is Mator.
Mater: Mator? Cool. Should I take you to my litre?

I love this thing. I own this set, this wonderful pulpy set, and it's just... it's so great. So hokey, so awesome. Bring back Alien Conquest!

The set this comes in is one of the best uses for train track I'd ever seen. Hmm, I wonder if anyone has ever made it with the regular-sized tracks?

Weird memory time!

My brother and I would come up with ideas for LEGO games based on current themes back in 2011 (the days when TT still made LEGO games and they didn’t suck). One of his ideas was LEGO Alien Conquest, which would make things “funny” by having the people be forced to do that weird disco finger dance (the one that Mike Teavee does in the Tim Burton Willy Wonka) as they get abducted by UFOs. This concept seemed irrational and unfunny, even at the time, and it has been with me ever since. Because of course my idea for the PS3 exclusive LEGO Atlantis shooter that used an exclusive Atlantis-themed light gun that would feature in one of the “Dear PlayStation” commercials was a better idea. P.S. I was always scared one of those would be a LittleBigPlanet 2 one. Sackboy’s design creeped the crap out of me as a kid. This is to say nothing of the strangely inappropriate nightmare about him I had around this time.

P.P.S. Weird LEGO Alien Conquest-based ideas haven’t left my life yet— the first indie film I intend to make takes inspiration from both Alien Conquest and XCOM. It also has some jokes that may or may not seem irrational and unfunny to most— not so much disco dancing, more of “poopy gets taken on the lead’s face as they try to flee alien jail” and “lead falls down a hill and hits head on everything before their face lands directly on a cake and everyone at the birthday party freaks out and throws random stuff at them.” Maybe I should just go back to his disco abduction idea, it fits the 60s B-movie aesthetic well enough, I guess.

I bought some unopened bags, two of which turned out to be from 8634 and this part is present. However I still don't know what it sounds like because those batteries were no good after almost a decade of being entombed. At least they hadn't leaked so hopefully some fresh ones will bring it back to life, when I eventually get around to it. Same with the similar light brick from one of the Creator houses we have.

Ufo sounds?

"We come in peace! Shoot to kill!"

It's a shame they don't make these anymore. I mean, how cool would it have been if they had included one with appropriate sounds in the Pac-Man set?

By in Netherlands,

To me, the Insectoids light/sound part is still the best element LEGO had pre-app era. (x239 on Bricklink/Rebrickable)

The main feature of set 6907 : Sonic Stinger.

The light effects would glow red ,mainly along the outer and inner lines of the neon section.

It had 3 sound buttons, one was a bleep, other a sci-fi cricket type of noise.

But the best was the 3rd sound button which if held, it would sound like a plane jet engine getting more power, eventually getting at max level, but if you released the button, it would sound like the engine powering down and eventually turn off.

It's sadly not on Brickset so can't be random part of the day.

They really should make more advanced/interactive sound functions like this*. At one point I thought it would be cool with a set/theme based on the "Gold Rush" TV show, but it needed a sound brick for the gold extractor. Normally it would work similar to the Grand Carousel one, if pressed regularly it would make typical heavy machinery sounds (engines running, rocks falling onto conveyors etc.).

But if you pressed the button faster than usual it would sound like the machinery is straining, and it would increase the random chance that it would instead make that "screeech-crunch" sound of something breaking, and the narrator going "Their key piece of equipment has broken down, if they can't fix it soon their whole season is bust" - maybe having the machine continuing to sound "broken" until left off for a few minutes.

*Especially as only making one or a few sounds over and over and over is really what's annoying with sound toys. Today it should be possible to squeeze hundreds of samples into a device like this, both Lego and other manufacturers really needs to up their game when it comes to such toys.

By in Belgium,

Yes this one! I still got it stocked somewhere in the attic, still got to build it any time soon. Curious for the sound ...

By in United Kingdom,

The upcoming Jaws Ideas set would certainly benefit from a Sound Brick!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know LEGO loves apps, but I'd love a brick, with a replaceable battery, where we could record sounds. Plug it into USB to change sounds...

By in Canada,

Looking at the set it came in...and now I've got an urge to play some "Destroy All Humans!!!" or its sequel...ah, fun stuff:)
