We always did refer to country line dancing as hillbilly disco...

By in Australia,

Is this the first Vidiyo figure chosen?

The imagination was there with Vidiyo. I loved the figures, and some of the larger thematic play-sets (like the Candy Castle or the Punk Pirate Ship) were great. But the whole thing was too cynical to ever really stand a chance. Lego basing the whole line around an app that nobody liked and barely worked didn't help, but the whole thing just screamed of being an obnoxious cash-grab, and surely they learned their lesson from the blind boxed figures (in my local stores, I noticed a lot of them had been torn open and stolen anyway, so I doubt the retailers thought it was a raging success).

Gimmick line for sure but such fantastic figs came out of this.

By in New Zealand,

Ah Vidiyo! Such an ill fated theme. Great figures (Mostly), great designs (again mostly).

Too bad the app killed it on arrival. I never tried it, but by all accounts, my phone wouldn't have run it anyway. The second wave of minifigures never even made it to retail here, but I was forward thinking enough to buy 20 from Lego when they released, and then another 20 in their last restock. So I do have this one.

Interestingly enough, I just went and picked up the last three series 1 boxes from a local store. They still have a number of the beatbox sets, but I'm passing on those for now.

By in United States,

Fun fact: discowboy (the band type for vidiyo) had only 2 members, this being one

@Zordboy:
Well that was easy. Yes. Yes it is. There's less than 100 RMotD articles, so adjusting the setting to show 100 gets them all. Doing a page search for "vid" yields four hits, all contained within this article.

@Lemerbrix06:
I'm pretty sure that was the entire fanbase, not the band.

Got Series 2 on sale from Amazon on one of their promo days. I think I paid less than half retail for them because of an extra 5% for buying 5 or more, and bought something like 50 units by the end of it to try and make probabilistically sure I'd get a complete series. Fits in with the less than 50% I paid for all the other VIDIYO sets on clearance (I have a YT video about that!). Now to find out where they went so I can open them...

By in United States,

@Zordboy: speaking of the app, i remember Gizmodo reviewed it. the one thing from said review that i remember most was the revelation that the app had no edit function, meaning that if you were not satisfied with your completed video, your only option was to start over completely. not having social media integration i can understand, but no editing? WTF? that's video-making-software 101!

Looking through the Vidiyo figure prices, it looks like the Season 2 bandmates might be one to “invest” in now - considering they came out only recently, several go for halfway decent sums.

So. Very. MAD!!!>:|
TLG should have released the initial 'release' of these, seen the sales/"buzz" on them, and released a few runs of them; BUT NOOOOO...They jammed them, all but covertly/"under cover of darkness"...and now GOOD LUCK trying to get aaaaaany of series 2 Bandmates without paying an arm/leg. And, on the 'flip side of the coin', their website/store needs a 'tweak' that: if you put something on a 'wishlist', if it get in the store, you should get notified. Is that too much to want/ask for...?

See, this is a theme I've defended before, because it has some great minifigures in it, including some B-horror stuff that I like so well (the 'Five Nights At Fabuland'-characters, not so much).

This was never one of my favourite designs though, and that was BEFORE I knew about that atrocious name, 'Discowgirl'. But I do love horrible puns, so I might just reluctantly like this character a little bit more now.

Not you, 'Samurapper'. Back into the oubliette with you.

By in United States,

Ah, now we're onto mostly unreleased figs.

Wish I could've picked up a few of Series 2 Bandmates, they were loads better than Series 1.

I loved the VIDIYO theme. Amazing minifigs and some awesome sets. My favorite? That would be 43114.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Good figure that, but probably from my least favourite musical genre within Vidiyo. Robo Hip Hop and Monster Metal rule!

"I loved the VIDIYO theme. Amazing minifigs and some awesome sets. My favorite? That would be 43114."

It's a shame lots of AFOLs were too blinded by the app (which most never used, and wasn't that bad anyway), to realise how good these LEGO sets were. My favourite set is 43115.

This minfig looks great.
Actually, most Vidiyo minfigs look great!
I just never understood what the whole theme was about.

It was TLG's fault for releasing the Beatbox's first, they had dozens of newly moulded and printed parts and were consequently really bad value at full RRP (I never paid more than 50% of the RRP in the UK). I expect the short-lived tie-in with Universal licenced artists didn't help the value, even though none of those artists were mentioned in the sets or shown in figure form.

Had the proper sets come out first I think we could have had a Dreamzzz-like reception instead. The sets and single figures don't seem expensive at all by today's standards, so perhaps Vidiyo was just one of the first themes to adopt the price changes we saw around that time.

It's a real shame because I'm sure more sets and figures had already been designed for the next releases, and what we did see was so positive, vibrant, creative and inspiring.

An easy to way to recoup (some of) the losses would be to repackage the minifigs and release them as standalone - that is to say, APP-LESS AND ALSO, WITHOUT DEVELOPMENT-COSTS ROLLED INTO THE PRICE - CMFs. Betcha they'd sell like hotcakes.

Do you hear that, TLG? We are still willing to give you money for good minifigs, even if and when your apps fail. Just in case you want to try and milk those Dimensions-licenses again, we're willing to lap it up. We just don't want to pay for apps we wouldn't use even if they DID work.

By in United States,

I have no idea why this was on my wanted list. I don't like modern country and I can take or leave disco, depending on the individual song. Maybe I wanted the guitar or the recolored Jessie hairpiece?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This was the outfit Marty McFly was wearing in BttF 3 right?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I do admit I liked the Vidiyo sets and figures. Especially since I got most of them dirt cheap on clearance.
I even installed the app for a while, but neither my daughter nor myself found enough fun with it to merit keeping it on my phone. It certainly didn't help that it took up more space than most of my other apps combined.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not being a Vidiyo connoisseur (I think I own... a torso? To one fig?), i had no idea what I was seeing at first, but I IMMEDIATELY recognised the Toy Story Jessie mould--and I own only a hair(piece) more Toy Story LEGO than I do Vidiyo LEGO.

Which makes me wonder where the line is between a licensed piece and a generic one. Is recolouring this enough to turn it into something LEGO doesn't have to pay extra for? Or is the original Jessie hair/hatpiece by itself not protected--only the full combination of the character?

I would be SO down for that. I bet we missed out on some quality stuff.

@NotProfessorWhymzi:
They make all their digital stuff as child-friendly as possible, to the point that I remember once having to pick from a list of randomly-generated usernames instead of picking my own. They may have decided having an edit function created a potential risk, and that it'd be easier to skip it. Another possibility is they just went with the lowest offer without really checking to see if the company they hired was up to the task in the first place (it wouldn't be the first time a drastically underqualified company got hired to produce LEGO-branded software).

@brick_r:
There is a stock notification function that's usually available when a set is listed as Out Of Stock (but not Retired). You have to opt in, though, and it only works once. You go to the product page, and on the sidebar where you can check physical store stock or get instructions, there's another button for "Notify When In Stock". Click it, follow the steps, and the next time they stock that set you'll get a single notification. If you miss your chance, you'll have to sign up again to get notified the next time it restocks.

@ComfySofa:
@thor96:
Most AFOLs either hated the fact that it had an app associated with it, or they hated the inflated prices. A few of us were smarter, and we hated it because it was clear that the set prices were subsidizing an app that nobody asked for.

@Formendacil:
For something like this, a simple color change is apparently all that's needed. For a long time, we thought the SW lightsaber hilt would remain exclusive, but I'm not sure they even need to change the color for that. However, I would be shocked to see Batman's cowl or Darth Vader's helmet show up outside of their respective themes. Those are a bit too specific to those characters. The Woody and Jessie heads from TS3 are too, but TS4 reduced those to standard minifigs with special hats. But the hats are based on generic hat styles, so they don't really need to stay theme-specific the way the TS3 heads did.

I will say this though - if Vidiyo walked into a minefield and exploded so that Dreamzzz could run away from that minefield, I'm okay with it.

Gravatar
By in United Arab Emirates,

It was such a shame that part of Vidiyo didn't last long. I loved the Minifigures for this theme so much, they were so lovely!

Gravatar
By in France,

Seeing the amount of "extravagant" colors even in regular city sets nowadays makes me think that we're seeing a lot of repurposed plastic they had planned for Vidiyo.

I wish they hadn't cut the series short like that. Especially one with so many subthemes that were waiting for their fuller sets. Imagine the castle we're missing from Dragon Metal, for example...

I hope that one day, when I can finally afford a Billund trip, that they'll let the true believer in me see their secret shelf of sets never released. I want to see what they had planned so badly!

100%

That set would have been brilliant at a £100ish RRP. Such a shame.

Lucky for me I have 70437 Mystery Castle as the foundation for an ear-melting metal gig, and I might even use the full-sized Nehmaar Reem from 70436 as a giant stage prop. I can't remember how many Monster Metal figs we got in Vidiyo, but I think Dreamzzz Nightmare King, and MK White Bone Demon and Spider Queen have potential as extra band members.

The official metal monsters from Vidiyo were

https://brickset.com/minifigs/vid009/banshee-singer,
https://brickset.com/minifigs/vid019/metal-dragon, https://brickset.com/minifigs/vid045/vampire-bassist,
https://brickset.com/minifigs/vid033/vampire-guitarist,
https://brickset.com/minifigs/vid018/werewolf-drummer and
https://brickset.com/minifigs/vid038/zombie-dancer

(and I suppose you could give https://brickset.com/minifigs/vid044/slime-singer a pass)

There's plenty of supplemental band-members from other themes, too. What about https://brickset.com/minifigs/dim039/marceline-the-vampire-queen?
https://brickset.com/minifigs/col222/monster-rocker is a prime candidate. And why not branch out with the original monster-drummer, https://brickset.com/minifigs/coltm08/animal-the-muppets himself?

@Phoenixio:
They've been doing in-line coloring for years now, so I'm not sure that would actually matter. The plastic pellets get used in order of receipt, regardless of what the parts end up being used for, and the in-line coloring system may blend other colors together, so there's no way to tell which theme got the colorant that would have originally been used for Vidiyo.
